🔥 Texas Wildfires: Massive Blaze Consumes One Million Acres, Nuclear Facility Shut Down
A sudden shift of wind direction in the Texas Panhandle this week contributed to the explosion in size of the Smokehouse Creek wildfire, which has burned at least 850,000 acres in Texas and another 31,000 acres in Oklahoma. It is now the second-largest fire in Texas state history, exceeding the size of Rhode Island. The blaze has burned dozens of structures and killed at least one person since igniting on Monday. It is still just 3% contained, according to state forest services. Calmer winds helped firefighters’ efforts on Wednesday, but forecasts show poor weather conditions could ramp up Friday and fan the flames again over the weekend.
Today is February 29, a leap day that occurs every four years to keep our calendar in sync with the seasons. Without the extra days, the summer we generally experience in June would eventually arrive in December after several centuries.

It was Friday, Jan. 8, the day after Genna, the Ethiopian Orthodox Christmas. Around 2 p.m., Kidane Tesfay heard gunshots near his family’s home and thought of his two brothers, ages 17 and 20, walking outside.
“When I looked through the door’s peephole, I saw them on the ground, their blood spilling out,” he said in an interview. He also saw soldiers wearing mud-flecked green camouflage gear striding up to the door.
“I had to escape,” Tesfay said. “Luckily our house has another entrance. I ran out the back.”
The Bora massacre was a mass extrajudicial killing that took place in Bora in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia during the Tigray War, on 8 January 2021, with aftermath killings that continued up to 10 January.

Atrocity took place during Sunday mass in Essakane village and has been blamed on a jihadi group active in the region.
“We bring to your attention a terrorist attack which the community of Essakane village was the victim of today, February 25, while they were gathered for Sunday prayer,” the vicar of the Dori diocese, Jean-Pierre Sawadogo, said in a statement sent to AFP.
The provisional toll was 15 killed and two wounded, he added.
Calling for peace and security in Burkina Faso, Sawadogo denounced “those who continue to wreak death and desolation in our country”.
This is just the latest in a series of atrocities blamed on terrorist groups active in the region, some of which have targeted Christian churches while others have involved the abduction of clergy.
Burkina Faso is part of the vast Sahel region, which has been locked in a battle against rising violent extremism since Libya’s civil war in 2011, followed by an Islamist takeover of northern Mali in 2012.
The jihadist insurgency spilled over into Burkina Faso and Niger from 2015.
When Captain Ibrahim Traore seized power in 2022, it was the country’s second coup in less than a year—both triggered in part by discontent at the government’s failures to quell the violence.
Around 20,000 people in Burkina Faso have been killed in that violence, while over two million have been displaced.
♱ Armed men linked to Oromo groups attacked the Zequala monastery, 50 kilometers from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where they abducted and subsequently gruesomely killed four monks. This was reported by the pontifical foundation Aid to the Church in Need. “The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has put forward the hypothesis that the Oomo Liberation Army group has a clandestine link with the regional government authorities of Oromia to target members of the Christian Orthodox Church in the region”
In a statement released on Thursday 22 February, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church accused “armed militants”, members of the Ola, of storming the monastery on Tuesday 20 February and kidnapping the priests. According to the statement, the Diocese of East Shewa subsequently informed the Church that four priests – Abatekelmariam Asrat, Abba Kidane Mariam Tilahun, Abba Gebremaryam Abebe and Hailemariam Woldesenbet – had been killed after being kidnapped. A monk, Kidanemariam Gebresenbat, survived but was injured in the attack.
This was reported by the pontifical foundation Aid to the Church in Need.
The event happened on February 22nd.

♱ Moscow Patriarchate Offers Condolences to Ethiopia Over Zequalla Abo Monastery Tragedy
In a heartfelt gesture of solidarity, Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, extended his condolences to Patriarch Abuna Matthias of Ethiopia. The message conveyed deep sorrow over the brutal murder of the brethren at the ancient Monastery of Zequalla Abo in Oromia region.
The letter, addressed to Patriarch Abuna Matthias, expressed profound grief over the tragic loss suffered by one of the most ancient monasteries of the Ethiopian Church. Metropolitan Anthony emphasized the heinous nature of the crime, underscoring its contradiction to both Divine and human law.
I ask you to accept my deepest condolences in connection with the brutal murder of the brethren of one of the most ancient monasteries of the Ethiopian Church, the monastery of St. Abo the Great, that took place in the village of Zukualla.
Each of those who committed this crime, which is contrary to the Divine and human law, must be punished, for, as Holy Scripture testifies, if the wicked is shown mercy, he will not learn righteousness (Isaiah. 26.10).
May Christ, the giver of life, give rest to the souls of those innocently killed in the villages of the righteous and grant a speedy recovery to those who suffered.
With love in the Lord,
Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate,
Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk

The funeral of a renowned transgender activist in a New York cathedral elicited a denunciation of the event by a senior church official, who called the Mass a scandal within one of the preeminent houses of worship in U.S. Catholicism. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York condemned the funeral of Cecilia Gentili in Manhattan’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Thursday.
The funeral, attended by a crowd estimated at more than 1,000 people, featured demands for transgender rights and health care. Organizers said they did not tell authorities at St. Patrick’s — known among Catholics as “America’s Parish Church” — that Gentili was transgender, fearing officials would have refused the funeral rite.
Two days later, the Very Rev. Enrique Salvo, the cathedral’s pastor, issued a statement in which he noted public “outrage over the scandalous behavior at a funeral here” and said the cathedral “had no idea our welcome and prayer would be degraded in such a sacrilegious and deceptive way.”
Father Salvo said a Mass of Reparation — performed to atone for offenses “committed against Our Lord” — was said at the cathedral on Saturday.
Catholic Vote maintains the transgender activists behind Gentili‘s service violated New York’s Hate Crimes Act.
“If you look at the criminal trespass code, there is a clear provision in there for gaining access to a venue through deception or subterfuge, and this is precisely what they did,” Brian Burch, the organization’s president, said in a telephone interview.
“Cathedral officials have confirmed that they were misled, they were deceived. This is the precise definition of criminal trespass,” he said.
Mr. Burch cited a 1974 case, People v. Segal, in which gay rights activists were prosecuted for seeking to block a CBS News broadcast they believed to be unfair.
“You had essentially a radical or an extreme trans activist who deceived church officials into holding a funeral service,” he said of the Gentili event. “And then gained access to the church and carried out a political stunt that mocked and denigrated the beliefs of those Catholics of the church.”
☪ Islamists are now in charge of Britain, Suella Braverman has said after the Commons Speaker admitted he had been wrong to ignore protocol over security threats to Mps.
In an article for The Telegraph, Mrs Braverman, the former home secretary, said Britain was “sleep-walking into a ghettoised society” that threatened free expression.
Her comments come a day after Sir Lindsay Hoyle sparked a furious backlash over a Gaza ceasefire vote by allowing a vote on a Labour amendment, leading to accusations that he had given in to extremists.
Sir Lindsay said he had broken with convention to allow MPs to vote on the widest possible range of amendments, citing threats that politicians had received over their stance on Israel and Gaza.
On Thursday, Sir Lindsay admitted he had made a “wrong decision” in his effort to protect MPs as he fought to keep his job.
However, Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt, the Leader of the Commons, warned on Thursday that changing Commons procedures in the way he had risked undermining democracy and giving in to intimidation by extremists.
Mrs Braverman, who was sacked by Mr Sunak after she accused police of “playing favourites” with pro-Palestinian protesters, accused Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, of “being in hock” to extremists and “taking the Speaker hostage” with a “grubby backroom deal” over the Labour amendment.
“The truth is that the Islamists, the extremists and the anti-Semites are in charge now,” she wrote. “They have bullied the Labour Party, they have bullied our institutions, and now they have bullied our country into submission.”
The former home secretary accused political leaders of “burying their heads in the sand”, preferring to believe in the “illusion” of a successful multicultural society and remaining terrified of being called racist if they challenged them.
“But the law has not changed, mass extremism parades itself proudly, campuses remain dangerous places for Jews, and Labour is still rotten to the core,” she said.
On Thursday, Mr Sunak said he found the scenes in the Commons “very concerning”, adding: “ think the important point here is that we should never let extremists intimidate us into changing the way in which Parliament works”.
By Thursday evening, more than 67 MPs had signed a motion declaring no confidence in Sir Lindsay. Stephen Flynn, the SNP’s Commons leader, and some Tory rebels are trying to oust the Speaker by forcing a no-confidence vote.
In his apology to the Commons on Thursday, the Speaker said: “I am guilty because… I have a duty of care that I will carry out to protect people.
“It is the protection that led me to make a wrong decision, but what I do not apologise [for] is the risk that has been put on all Members at the moment. I had serious meetings yesterday with the police on the issues and threats to politicians for us heading to an election.”
Mrs Braverman claimed that while she may have been sacked for speaking out against what she called the appeasement of Islamists, she said she would do it again.
This was “because we need to wake up to what we are sleep-walking into: a ghettoised society where free expression and British values are diluted. Where Sharia law, the Islamist mob and anti-Semites take over communities,” she said.
“We need to overcome the fear of being labelled Islamophobic and speak truthfully. Enough of the hand-wringing and apologies. Turning a blind eye to fanatics has got us into this terrible situation: it needs to stop.”
Her comments come after William Shawcross, the independent reviewer of the counter-terror Prevent programme, warned in an interview with The Telegraph that Islamist extremism was not being effectively tackled by the Government, leading to an increased threat to the safety of the public.
Referencing Mr Shawcross’s warning, Mrs Braverman said it was critical to resist attacks on the Prevent programme – which requires councils, police and schools to identify potential extremists – by campaign groups that have labelled it “Islamophobic” and “racist.”
Mrs Braverman, who published Mr Shawcross’s review of Prevent last year, said: “We need to get over our cultural timidity to refer budding Islamists, where they are a threat, into the programme.
“The Government has failed if 75 per cent of MI5’s caseload consists of Islamist terrorism yet the proportion of Islamist referrals into Prevent is only 11 per cent and falling. It’s not Islamophobic to challenge Islamist fanatics – it’s a civic duty.”
She backed Mr Shawcross’s recommendation for schools to be issued with guidance to stop blasphemy laws being introduced by the “back door” and exploited by extremists to silence critics and stymie “perfectly lawful” criticism of religions, including Islam.
It follows high-profile cases including that of Batley Grammar School where a teacher was driven out of his school by “a mob of extremists” and into hiding after showing pupils a satirical image of the Prophet Mohammed.
“We cannot allow teachers to be hounded out of schools because a picture of Mohammed was shown, or children to be censured because a Koran was scuffed accidentally,” she wrote. “In this country, it is perfectly lawful to criticise any religion or God. One may disagree passionately, but it is not criminal.”
