The harrowing mass-murder of at least 800 people at an Ethiopian church in Tigray highlighted the apparent whereabouts of The Ark of the Covenant, one of the biggest mysteries in religion and the stuff of movie legend.
The Ark — a large, gold-covered wooden chest said to hold Moses’ Ten Commandments — was held at the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem for centuries, but vanished after Jerusalem was sacked in 586 or 587 BC, according to the Old Testament.
Since then its whereabouts have remained unknown — with rumors including it being stolen by the Knights Templar and hidden in a rebuilt French cathedral, as well as it being buried alongside Alexander the Great in Greece.
However, Ethiopia’s Orthodox Christians have long maintained that The Ark has been held in a chapel at the Church of St. Mary of Zion in the holy northern city of Axum.
According to The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, The Ark was brought to Ethiopia in the 10th century BC after being stolen by the staff of Menelik, the son of the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon of Israel — who deemed the theft was permitted by God because none of his men were killed.
The Ark is said to be so dangerous it was always covered while moved — and in Axum, only virgin monks ordained to be its keeper are allowed to look at it.
“If you attack Axum, you attack first of all the identity of Orthodox Tigrayans but also of all Ethiopian Orthodox Christians,” said Wolbert Smidt, an ethnohistorian who specializes in the region. “Axum itself is regarded as a church in the local tradition, ‘Axum Zion.’”
💭 Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed on Monday that a terrorist attack outside Moscow that left almost 140 people dead “was committed by radical Islamists.”
In a review of the attack, Putin again on Monday claimed the suspected attackers were captured while trying to flee toward Ukraine. He claimed that it now must be clarified why the terrorists wanted to escape to Ukraine after the bloody deed – “and who was expecting them there.”
An offshoot of the Islamic State terrorist group, the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) which is based in Afghanistan and Pakistan, claimed responsibility for the brutal attack on the Crocus City Hall concert venue on Friday night, and published videos of the mass shooting to bolster its claim.
Putin on Monday said investigators still needed to answer several questions.
“How do radical Islamists who claim to be devout Muslims and profess so-called pure Islam come to commit serious atrocities and crimes during the holy month of Ramadan, which is sacred to all Muslims?” he asked.
It also remains to be seen “whether radical and terrorist Islamic organizations are really interested in attacking Russia, which today stands for a just solution to the escalating Middle East conflict,” he added.
Turkmen authorities are exploring how to bring Turkmen students studying at Russian universities back home, amid fears of an anti-immigrant backlash in the wake of last week’s terrorist attack on Moscow’s outskirts.
It’s unclear exactly how many Turkmen students attend Russian universities, though estimates put the number in the thousands.
Russian authorities have accused four ethnic Tajik men who worked as migrant laborers in Russia of being the attackers; four other people with Central Asian backgrounds have also been accused of being accomplices in the attack.
The arrests have stoked fears of an anti-immigrant backlash in Russian society; millions of migrant workers from Central Asia labor in Russia, where wages are substantially higher. Most Central Asian nations rely heavily on remittances to buttress their economies.
Kyrgyzstan has already advised its citizens to refrain from traveling to Russia out of fears Kyrgyz nationals could be harassed or attacked.
Security officers in three other Turkmen cities — Cheleken, Balkanabat, and Turkmenbashi — were reportedly conducting mass questioning of men and women on their way to mosques for prayers, according to local witnesses. The majority of those stopped and questioned were men with beards and women in hijabs.
The security officers “recommended” some of those who were stopped for questioning “to pray at home” and others were asked about links with radical Islamist groups, multiple people told RFE/RL.
Law enforcement officers also reportedly told believers that they should stop fasting during Ramadan, when all practicing Muslims abstain from food, water, and smoking from sunrise to sunset. The Muslim holy month began this year on March 10.
In the western city of Turkmenbashi, all shops selling religious items and clothes, such as rugs for prayers, hijabs, Korans, and similar goods were ordered closed following the Moscow attack.

After a period of relative quiet, the Islamic State has been trying to increase its external attacks, according to U.S. counterterrorism officials.
A branch of the Islamic State claimed responsibility on Friday for the attack in Moscow that killed at least 93 people and injured about 100 others, and U.S. officials confirmed the claim shortly afterward.
The United States collected intelligence in March that Islamic State-Khorasan, known as ISIS-K, the branch of the group based in Afghanistan, had been planning an attack on Moscow, according to officials. ISIS members have been active in Russia, one U.S. official said.
After a period of relative quiet, the Islamic State has been trying to increase its external attacks, according to U.S. counterterrorism officials. Most of those plots in Europe have been thwarted, prompting assessments that the group had diminished capabilities.
“ISIS-K has been fixated on Russia for the past two years,” frequently criticizing President Vladimir V. Putin in its propaganda, said Colin P. Clarke, a counterterrorism analyst at the Soufan Group, a security consulting firm based in New York. “ISIS-K accuses the Kremlin of having Muslim blood in its hands, referencing Moscow’s interventions in Afghanistan, Chechnya and Syria.”
The attack on Friday in Moscow, like a January assault in Iran claimed by the group, could prompt a reassessment of its ability to strike outside its home territory.
In addition to publicly warning on March 7 about a possible attack, U.S. officials said they had privately told Russian officials about the intelligence pointing to an impending attack. It is not clear how much information the United States gave Russian officials beyond what was in the public warning.
American intelligence agencies have a “duty to warn” potential targets of dangers when they learn of them.
The United States had warned Iran of a possible attack ahead of twin bombings in January that killed scores and wounded hundreds of others at a memorial service for Iran’s former top general, Qassim Suleimani, who was killed by a U.S. drone strike four years before.

A series of intense earthquakes have been observed in the southern Philippines, the latest of which had a magnitude of 6.9. The US Geological Survey reported this earthquake, which occurred off the country’s southern coast early on Monday morning. This comes after a 6.6 magnitude earthquake the day before and a powerful 7.6 magnitude quake on Saturday that claimed at least two lives and caused multiple injuries, according to AFP news agency. The Saturday earthquake resulted in tsunami warnings across the Pacific, leading to evacuations among residents along the east coast of Mindanao.
The fatalities included a 30-year-old man who succumbed to his injuries after a wall of his house collapsed on him, and a pregnant woman in Tagum City. In a terrifying incident, two children and their parents jumped out of a second-floor window as their house shook violently. Thankfully, they landed on a grassy plot and escaped without injuries. This flurry of seismic activity comes on the heels of a 6.7 magnitude earthquake in Mindanao two weeks ago, which led to the deaths of at least nine people and structural damage, including a shopping mall ceiling partially collapsing.

In a very serious attack, 4 people were killed and more than 40 injured in an explosion that occurred in the gymnasium of the Mindanao State University of Marawi, where Mass was being celebrated.
Marawi is the capital of the province of Lanao del Sur, one of those included in the Bangsamoro, the autonomous Muslim region officially established in 2019 as a result of the agreements to put an end to the long war with the Muslim militias of Mindanao, the large island in the south of the Philippines where the Islamic presence is strongest.
The attack was immediately attributed to the local Islamist group Daulah Islamiyah-Maute – which does not accept the Bangsamoro solution – which in recent days had seen 11 of its militiamen killed in an operation by the Philippine army. It is likely that the explosion in the gymnasium of MIndanao State University – one of the largest universities in the country – was caused by a grenade or a rudimentary bomb.
With its 200 thousand inhabitants – the vast majority of whom are Muslims – Marawi is a city where the wounds of the five months of war in 2017 remain deep, when the Maute Group, a terrorist group linked to the Islamic State, assumed control.
More than a thousand people, including many civilians, died in the weeks of fighting between the Islamist militias and the Philippine army which only managed to regain control on 23 October 2017. Already on that occasion the local Christian community was directly targeted: the vicar general Fr. Teresimo “Chito” Suganob and numerous parishioners of the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians were taken hostage and were released only after four months.
However, years after those events, the promises to rebuild Marawi have remained largely unfulfilled: in this city there are still tens of thousands of people living in the makeshift shelters set up during the emergency.
In a statement, the president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), the bishop of Kalookan Msgr. Pablo Virgilio David, underlined the concomitance between the attack and the first Sunday of Advent, which the Church celebrates today.
The perpetrators, said the bishop, “chose precisely this occasion to explode a bomb”. “Surely the murderers who provoked such a horrendous act of violence also have their loved ones. What would it take to ensure that they see in the families of their victims their own families?” – said David. “This violence should not only be denounced, but also rejected as a way to seek reparation from every peace-loving Filipino.”
Recalling that only last Wednesday in many countries around the world Catholics experienced “Red Wednesday”, the day that remembers persecuted Christians, Msgr. David adds that these faithful killed during the Mass in Marawi “shed their blood as a libation like the blood of Christ. They professed their faith in the last Mass they attended, especially in the communion of saints, in the forgiveness of sins, in the resurrection of the body and in eternal life.”
Saying he agrees with the statement of the affected university – which states that “violence has no place in a civil society” – the president of the Philippine bishops reaffirms “the incessant commitment of the Philippine Catholic Church for peace” and solidarity “with our Christian community and with all those who have been affected by this tragedy”.
The Archbishop Emeritus of Cotabato, Card., also spoke today about the Marawi massacre. Orlando Quevedo, always at the forefront for the promotion of peace in Mindanao and for this reason member of the Council of Leaders of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region.
