President Aleksandar Vucic put the Serbian army on the highest level of combat alert after around 25 NATO peacekeeping soldiers defending three town halls in northern Kosovo were injured in clashes with Serbs as they protested against ethnic Albanian mayors
At least 25 NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR) peacekeepers and 50 Serbian protesters were injured on Tuesday in northern Kosovo during clashes over the recent election of ethnic Albanian mayors, reported United Press International.
The violence comes after local Serbs gathered in front of municipal buildings on Saturday to protest the town Zvecan’s newly elected mayors and to prevent them from entering. The ethnic Albanian mayors were sworn in on Friday to replace Serb mayors who had resigned in November in protest over a cross-border dispute involving vehicle registrations.
On Tuesday, KFOR units issued a warning to the protesters to disperse.
“You are causing unrest. You are putting yourself and your community at risk,” an audio warning from the KFOR troops blared out. “Leave the area and go home. Otherwise, the KFOR will be forced to intervene.”
KFOR troops used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the crowd while protesters responded with stones, bottles and sticks, according to Kosovo police who confirmed that five protesters were arrested.
In addition to the injuries, military, police and media vehicles were damaged during the attacks, the police said, calling the protesters continually non-peaceful.
So far, several KFOR officers were injured while five individuals have been arrested for attacks and violence, the police said.
Protest is ongoing and the situation continues to be tense, especially in Zvecan. In other municipalities, there are people and criminal groups wearing black clothes and masks, the police added.
NATO issued a statement on Tuesday, calling for an end to the violence.
“NATO strongly condemns the unprovoked attacks against KFOR troops in northern Kosovo, which have led to a number of them being injured. Such attacks are totally unacceptable. Violence must stop immediately,” NATO said.
“We call on all sides to refrain from actions that further inflame tensions, and to engage in dialogue. KFOR will take all necessary actions to maintain a safe and secure environment, and will continue to act impartially, in accordance with its mandate under the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 of 1999.”
Several Italian and Hungarian soldiers were among those injured after sustaining trauma wounds with fractures and burns due to the explosion of incendiary devices and were under observation at a health facility, according to the KFOR.
“I want to express my solidarity with the soldiers of the KFOR mission who were injured in Kosovo during the clashes between Serbian demonstrators and the Kosovar Police. Among them 11 Italians, three of whom are in serious condition, but not life-threatening. The Italian military continues to commit themselves to peace,” Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, wrote in a tweet on Tuesday.
US ambassador to Kosovo, Jeff Hovenier, also condemned the attacks.
“The US strongly condemns the violent actions of protesters in Zvecan today, including the use of explosives against NATO’s KFOR troops seeking to keep the peace. We reiterate our call for an immediate halt to violence or actions that inflame tensions or promote conflict,” Hovenier said in a tweet.
Meanwhile, Serbian President Aleksander Vucic, whose country does not recognise Kosovo, blasted Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti for fuelling tensions.
“In the last three days, anyone could understand what was being prepared for today in Kosovo. Everything was organised by Albin Kurti, everything with his desire to bring about a big conflict between Serbs and NATO,” Vucic told reporters Tuesday.
Serbs in the north gathered at 7 am Tuesday to express their dissatisfaction with the illegal takeover of local governments and that the KFOR did not protect the Serbs and did not prevent the violence.

🔥 Serbia President Puts Military on Combat Alert, Orders Army to Move Closer to Kosovo Border
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic placed the country’s army on full combat alert and ordered its units to move closer to the border with Kosovo, the Tanjug news agency reported on Friday.
Vucic’s orders came as Serbs in the northern Kosovo’s municipality of Zvecan clashed with Kosovo police who were trying to help the newly elected ethnic Albanian mayor enter his office.
The local vote had been boycotted by Serbs who represent a majority in the area.
Local media reported that Kosovo police fired tear gas at a crowd gathered in front of the municipality building.

Islamic extremists recently launched multiple attacks in northern Burkina Faso. The militants targeted Kourakou and Tondobi villages and left at least 156 people dead on April 6-7.
Burkina Faso has struggled with a rise in jihadism over the last several years. Militants linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS began initiating violent attacks in Burkina Faso, mostly starting in 2015. The violence seen in Burkina Faso is part of a broader trend of jihadism that has displaced 2.3 million people across West Africa’s Sahel region.
In 2021, Burkina Faso experienced a record year of conflict and replaced Mali as the epicenter of Sahel terrorism. On June 4, 2021, the country underwent the bloodiest attack yet in its six-year struggle with jihadists, when Al-Qaeda affiliates killed more than 135 civilians over the course of two nights. Seven months and several attacks later, soldiers staged a coup and announced a government run by a military junta.
More than 10,000 Christians in Burkina Faso have now been driven from their homes due to the violence of ISIS and al-Qaida. The believers are part of an estimated 2.3 million people displaced by jihadist attacks across West Africa. With the United Nations estimating 20% of the population of Burkina Faso now needing humanitarian aid, international groups are mobilizing to provide food, water, and shelter.
According to a 2019 government census, around 64% of Burkinabes adhere to Islam, while around 24% identify as Christians.

Baltimore police are investigating a hate crime after a man reportedly tried to rip off a pride flag from a church in Federal Hill.
Officers were called to the church around 4 p.m. on Monday to investigate a destruction-of-property report.
Someone saw an unknown man climbing the outside wall of the church, according to authorities. That man was hanging from the pride flag in an attempt to rip it from the wall.

The remains of a ripped LGBT flag still hang outside of the Light Street Presbyterian Church in Federal Hill on Tuesday night.
A witness to the crime told WJZ that the person responsible used the flag to climb to the top and then pulled out a knife to slice it in half before hopping into a getaway car.
“Halfway down the block, I see a guy on a potted plant and he starts climbing up the flag,” neighborhood resident and witness Ben Luster told WJZ.
The man made multiple attempts to climb and eventually reached the top of the flag. That’s when he pulled out a knife and ripped in half, Luster said.
“I asked him what he was doing and he mentioned the flag in front of the church is an abomination,” he said. “So, he started ripping it.”
The man responded by saying “he was doing the lord’s work,” Luster said.
Pastor Tim Hughes Williams said the 10-foot flag was a symbol of inclusion.
“I think it’s ironic that people who are coming from a position of faith are acting with so much hostility and hatred,” he said.
Williams said the church—with the support of the community—is raising funds to buy a new flag. The church has been a safe space for LGTBQ members for nearly three decades.
“To me, the violence against the flag . . . reinforces how important it is that there are places like this,” he said.
