Muslim extremists attacked Coptic Christians in the village of Al-Kom Al-Ahmar on Friday (April 26) after learning that an evangelical church had obtained a permit to construct a church building, according to advocacy group Copts United.
“The security forces moved to the village, and the situation was brought under control and a number of the perpetrators were being arrested,” the group reported. “One of the village’s Copts said that the evangelical church in the village obtained an official building permit, which angered a number of extremists.”
On Tuesday (April 23) in southern Minya Governorate, angry residents beat Coptic Christians and torched their homes in Al-Fawakher village, of the city of Samalut, over rumors that a church building was to be constructed there, according to Northern Africa News (nan.media)
The assailants tried to drive Copts from their homes, the outlet reported.
Bishop Makarios of Minya wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that initially the assailants prevented people from fleeing the violence. He later posted that security forces deployed to the village restored calm and arrested a large number of suspects.
“The extremists attacked Coptic homes with stones and chants, and a number of homes were set on fire, amid the screams of women and children,” the group reported. “The attack continued for a long time before the security forces arrived.”
Advocacy group Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), however, reported that police and firefighters, led by the deputy governor and the head of the police department in Minya, acted quickly to contain the situation.
The police were arresting perpetrators, including those who spread rumors online about plans to construct a church, according to CSW.
“An unacceptable culture of intimidation and discrimination is still far too prevalent in this region despite positive steps taken by the Egyptian authorities in recent years, and the personal commitment of President Sisi to fight sectarian extremism and promote equality of citizenship,” CSW President Mervyn Thomas said in a press statement. “Egyptian citizens should all be free to practice any religion or belief of their choosing without fear of threats or physical violence.”
Separately, CSW reported, the Egyptian government issued a memorandum designating May 5 and 6, a Sunday and a Monday, as bank holidays for Labor Day, which falls on 1 May. The move outraged the Coptic Orthodox community, which celebrates Orthodox Easter Sunday on May 5.
“Coptic activists suggested to CSW that the move may be intended to appease Egypt’s Salafi Muslim community, who consider recognizing Easter to be sinful, as it defies the mainstream Islamic doctrine which denies Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection,” CSW stated.

The intentional fire, officials said, took place on a street outside Global Vision Bible Church in Mount Juliet, a city about 20 miles directly east of downtown Nashville.
About 6 a.m., police and firefighters responded to a report of a trailer fire at an intersection outside the evangelical church and “promptly extinguished” the blaze, the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office reported.
No injuries were reported by the agency.
The trailer, containing bibles, “had been dropped off in the middle of the intersection and then intentionally set on fire,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a news release.

Locke addressed the trailer fire at Global Vision and said there were “probably 200 Bibles” on the trailer, The Tennessean, part of the USA TODAY Network reported, adding Locke said the fire was set in front of an entrance.
He said the fire “was 100 percent directed” at the church he founded.
“It blocked the entrance to our campus and the fact that it was an entire load of Bibles is rather conclusive proof that is was most assuredly directed at us,” Locke said. “It did not, nor will it stop us. It was cleaned up in time for people to drive into the parking lot. We had a full house and a marvelous service.”

Global Vision has held burning events in the past that involved materials the church believes is connected to witchcraft and the occult.

✞ A Presbyterian church building in Rawalpindi District, Pakistan was burned to the ground in a suspected arson attack on Saturday, one day after a local Muslim threatened that he would not allow the congregation to celebrate Easter in their building, Morning Star News (MSN) reports.
In a statement to MSN, Rev. Adeem Alphonse of the United Presbyterian Junior Church in Gujar Khan said a suspected arsonist had burned down his church building in the early hours on Saturday morning. “The huge fire burned everything inside the church, including holy books, the sound system, furniture and curtains, etc. Pastor Alphonse said. “We strongly suspect that it’s a case of arson, but the police and administration are trying to hush up the matter by terming it an outcome of a short-circuit in the electricity wiring.”
The church’s congregation believes the fire was started by a Muslim known as Sheikh Ahmed, a businessman who wants the church’s plot of land for a plaza he is developing, MSN reports. Ahmed had come to the church on Good Friday and disrupted the ongoing service by trying to tear down tent coverings set up outside the building, Pastor Alphonse said.
“When the police stopped Ahmed from causing unrest, he threatened our church elders that he will not let us have Easter service at any cost,” Pastor Alphonse said. “We resumed our Good Friday service thinking that the police would talk sense into him, but I was shocked when I received a telephone call the same night that my church was burning. Everything inside was reduced to ashes. When we checked the electricity wiring, we did not see any signs of a short-circuit.”
Pastor Alphonse said, “The building was previously used as a Hindu temple, but the Pakistani government allocated the building to Christians after the Partition when the area’s Hindu community chose to migrate to India.” It has been allotted to the church on a rental basis.
Despite the congregation’s report to police that they believe Ahmed was behind the fire, City Police Officer Rawalpindi Syed Khalid Mehmood Hamdani said in a press statement it was caused by a short circuit. Nevertheless, investigations were said to be ongoing.

The fire destroyed the rectory section of the building – which is more like classrooms and office space than a clergy residence. The actual church where services are held is in better shape thanks to firefighters who took steps to keep the flames from spreading.
Before the fire raged to five alarms — taking about two hundred firefighters and four hours to get under control – a congregation was gathered inside the Bushwick church to celebrate the 1 p.m. Easter mass in Spanish, led by Fr. Romulo Marin.
Fr. Marin says when smoke began wafting into the service, nearly 200 parishioners evacuated safely while he went to try to put it out with a fire extinguisher – but the flames were starting to eat through the second floor, which was crumbling.
“And the floor collapsed,” Fr. Marin said.
He tells Eyewitness News that is when he knew he needed to get out. Firefighters were there quickly and were having their own trouble with the collapsing second floor. One firefighter fell through a hole, prompting others to issue a mayday call, fearing he was hurt.
“He didn’t realize that the mayday was for him, so he bounced up off the floor, came in and wanted to run back up the stairs to address the mayday issue. But not realizing that the mayday was himself, he was unhurt, thank God, and he was able to continue to fight the fire,” said FDNY Assistant Chief Michael Myers.
The fire was smoky and stubborn – parishioners at the church established more than a hundred years ago, spent their holiest day of the calendar thankful for the firefighters’ efforts and that no one was badly hurt – but they were also feeling heartbroken.
“It’s one of the churches around for a long time – the history that develops among people individually. So this is hurting everybody that worships here,” said John Quaglione of the Brooklyn Diocese.
Fr. Marin says he believes sometimes God destroys the old to make way for the new – and on this day celebrating resurrection, his only hope is that his church will come back stronger. As he and worshippers evacuated, the FDNY says they were wise to close the door separating the fire in the back of the building from the main worship space.
“Keep the door closed, because that contains the fire. And thankfully, we were able to save the church. Part of the structure has some water damage but is undamaged overall. And I think that’s God looking down on us today, on Easter Sunday, and saving at least that part of the building,” added Myers.
The other good news is that all injuries were minor. Two firefighters were sent to the hospital, but everyone else was treated at the scene.

The nightclub was on the ground floor of a 16-story residential building in the Besiktas district on the European side of the city bisected by the Bosphorus.

The statement by James Dallaway that “fires are so frequent that few months pass without them”1 confirms this. In addition, the adage “the fires of Istanbul, the epidemics of Anatolia”2 represents the significant place that this type of disaster occupied in people’s minds.
The first edict that directed a radical shift from wood to stone as the prevalent construction material in Istanbul was enacted in the 17th century,3 but change did not really yield positive results until the 19th century. There were many reasons behind this delay, among them the frequent large earthquakes in the region, the high cost of stone construction materials in terms of labor and transportation, the greater necessity urging people to reconstruct their houses shortly after disasters, and the fact that wooden buildings were easily heated and altered or renovated. It is also clear that with every fire, changes in the topographical structure of the city appeared.
Throughout the centuries of Ottoman Istanbul, dozens of fires occurred; some were so great that they were given names such as ihrâk ı azîm, harîk i kebîr, and harîk-i ekber.
