Police in the French capital, Paris, on Wednesday cleared a major migrant squat in the southern suburb of Vitry-sur-Seine with just 100 days to go before the start of the 2024 Summer Olympics.
The makeshift camp at the site of an abandoned bus company office had been home to roughly 450 migrants, mainly young men but including some mothers with small children as well.
Rights groups said most migrants there had documents and were awaiting social housing allotments.
Concerned aid organizations expressed fear that those now being ejected in an effort to “clean up” the city before the Olympics take place — from July 26 to August 11 — would not be able to find long-term housing assistance after being thrown out.
“The squat was the biggest in France. It doubled in size in one year because of the Olympics. Last year, authorities cleared out migrants from nearby the Olympic Village, and many displaced people came here,” said Paul Alauzy of the humanitarian organization Medecins du Monde.
Authorities said the eviction operation will continue for several days. On Wednesday, some 300 people were forcibly removed from the site — 150 had left the night before. Many of those evicted were put onto buses to be brought to other cities around France.
Some groups also raised concerns that the move would negatively impact the well-being of school-aged children who are uprooted from the squat.

Migration Control Obsession Ignores Abuses, Entrenches Oppression
Visiting Cairo on March 17, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, along with the Prime Ministers of Italy, Greece, and Belgium, will officially upgrade the EU-Egypt relations to a “comprehensive and strategic partnership”, paving the way for a package of EU aid, grants, loans and investments in the country estimated at between four and eight billion Euros.
Key in this partnership will be the EU’s support for Egypt’s border control. While details are under negotiation, the blueprint is the same as the flawed EU deals with Tunisia and Mauritania: stop migrants, ignore abuses.
Human Rights Watch has long criticized the EU’s cash-for-migration-control approach, crystalized under von der Leyen, which exposes the EU to complicity in abuses, contradicts the EU’s founding values, erodes its credibility as a principled global player, and emboldens the far right’s demagogic narrative across Europe. It strengthens authoritarian rulers while betraying human rights defenders, journalists, lawyers, and activists whose work involves great personal risk.
Egypt is the epitome of this
Since taking power in a 2013 coup, and becoming president of Egypt in 2014, Sisi’s governments have ruled Egypt with an iron fist. They have been responsible for massacring protesters and jailing and torturing thousands of perceived critics and opponents – often holding them in protracted pre-trial detention or sentencing them in grossly unfair trials. Independent media and civil society have been stifled and the judiciary is an obedient arm of government repression. The ruling military has expanded its powers over civilian life.
Now this abysmal repression is being rewarded with fresh support from the EU, including funds that will likely directly support the repression of migrants.
At the same time, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the United Arab Emirates have provided billions for Egypt’s depleted reserves. The IMF funds are linked to economic reforms supported by the EU, although some of the reforms are detrimental to the Egyptians’ economic rights, amid increasing poverty.
Without pushing for genuine human rights reforms or reining in Egyptian government abuses, the EU’s support is unlikely to stop the next economic or political crisis from erupting in Egypt. Ordinary Egyptians, businesspeople, migrants, and refugees will continue paying the price for this approach, while their oppressors thrive on impunity and renewed support.

😈 A video of Nabil Absi, a Muslim man originally from Algeria but lives in Quebec, Canada, has stunned many.
The video showed the man dressed in Catholic priestly attire and walked right into a Catholic church during mass. He went close to the priest, spread his Islamic prayer mat and performed the Islamic ritual to the shock of the congregants who watched him while also reciting their Christian hymnal song simultaneously.
Members of Parliament in Canada have condemned the action of the man who disrupted the church mass, reported Epoch Times.
“This disruption of a Catholic Mass is appalling. It’s also a criminal act,” wrote Conservative MP Michael Barrett on X (formerly Twitter) Jan. 25.
Independent MP Kevin Vuong also commented on the video on X.
“This must be condemned as we would if this was done to any other religion,” said Mr. Vuong.
“Similarly, more needs to be acted on re: acts of arson against churches. The case for an Office of Religious Freedom with an international AND domestic mandate becomes ever stronger to protect all of faith.”
In a video he posted to his Facebook page, Mr. Absi can be seen walking up to the priest presiding over the Mass.
“Excuse me, my father,” Mr. Absi says in French to the priest. “I can’t find a mosque, would it bother you if I prayed over there? It’s a sacred place.”
The priest politely agrees and gestures toward the floor a few feet away.
The camera then pans over to an elderly woman taking in the scene. She makes the sign of the cross. Mr. Absi’s video captions the action with the phrase, “She is shocked,” including a laughter emoji.
Mr. Absi begins to pray on a small carpet in Islamic fashion. After a while, he leaves and thanks the priest on his way out.
Mr. Barrett noted the muted response of the congregation to the events that took place.
“The reserved response of clergy and the gathered faithful isn’t indifference – it’s a testament to their devotion,” he said on X.

🐀 A report finds that some 2,500 migrants are living in squalid conditions in Chicago in a city-sponsored facility that was converted from a warehouse to a migrant shelter.
A report claims that the shelter is infested with rats and cockroaches, is covered in rotting food and garbage, has water quality issues, and has open sewage problems, among other issues, Chicago’s WTTW reported.
The complaints about the conditions at the shelter in the 2200 block of South Halsted Avenue were revealed in emails sent to Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson in October well ahead of the incident in December when a migrant child died at Comer Children’s Hospital after he took ill in the shelter.
Several other migrants at the same shelter had also fallen ill in the days after the child died. City officials have still not released any cause of death for the child.
WTTW reported that an email dated from October was sent to city hall alerting Mayor Johnson’s administration about the wretched conditions at the shelter. It was reportedly sent by 11th Ward Alderwoman Nicole Lee.
The station initially filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for the emails but received documents that were nearly entirely redacted. However, government watchdog group FOIA Bakery obtained the unredacted messages and shared them with the station.
“The redacted parts allege the shelter had insufficient bathrooms, exposed pipes with raw sewage, cockroach infestation, a possible outbreak of illness with many people being sick, insufficient provision of meals and water,” WTTW reported.
Further emails showed city officials had replied to the emails and had been working to confirm the conditions.

☆ Texas is refusing to comply with a cease-and-desist letter from the Biden administration over actions by the state that have impeded U.S. Border Patrol agents from accessing part of the border with Mexico.
In a letter to the Department of Homeland Security, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton rejected the Biden administration’s request for the state to “cease and desist” its takeover of Shelby Park, an epicenter of southwest border illegal immigration in Eagle Pass.
“Because the facts and law side with Texas, the State will continue utilizing its constitutional authority to defend her territory, and I will continue defending those lawful efforts in court,” Paxton wrote.
When reached for comment, a DHS spokesperson referred NBC News to Department of Homeland Security General Counsel Jonathan Meyer’s letter this week directing the state to stop blocking the Border Patrol’s full access to roughly 2½ miles of the U.S.-Mexico border occupied by the state’s National Guard.
DHS officials said Saturday that a woman and two children drowned in the Rio Grande after Border Patrol agents “were physically barred by Texas officials from entering the area” under orders from Republican Gov. Greg Abbott.
The Texas Military Department disputed the DHS statement, saying its personnel were aware of a distress report but had not detected any distressed migrants.
A White House spokesperson criticized Abbott’s immigration policies in response to the drownings, saying in a statement this week that his “political stunts are cruel, inhumane and dangerous.”
