💭 English political activist Tommy Robinson was arrested on Monday evening in Canada after delivering an address in Calgary on the importance of free speech following which around 10 plain-clothed under-cover police officers detained him.
Tommy Robinson, an outspoken critic of mass migration, and commentator on the incongruity of Islamic beliefs with Western society, particularly majority-Muslim child rape gangs in England, was arrested on an alleged immigration offence after giving a speech to around 150 people in Calgary during his planned three-stop tour of Canada hosted by Ezra Levant’s Rebel News.
Footage posted on social media showed Robinson being handcuffed and put in the back of a police car by what appeared to be undercover officers in street clothes. The right-wing activist was seen laughing while describing his arrest as “absolutely insane”.
“What have I got a warrant out for?” Robinson was heard questioning, to which an officer replied: “You’ve got an outstanding immigration warrant, we’ll talk about it in the vehicle.”
At the time of this reporting, Calgary Police have not made any statement on why the English political campaigner was arrested. However, Robinson has previously been convicted of entering the United States with a friend’s passport.
After spending several hours behind bars, Robinson was released, but said that he had his passport seized and was told to not leave the province of Alberta, potentially preventing him from continuing his speaking tour, which had planned stops in Edmonton and Toronto.
“OK I’m free, well, sort of. None of this makes sense, I’m now detained in Calgary, prevented from leaving the city, these conditions stop me from continuing my tour of Canada and meeting with guests for podcasts. I’m not even allowed to leave to travel home,” Robinson wrote on social media following his release.

1. We, Mekete Tigray UK, are an independent community association of Tigrayan Diaspora in the UK, set up to promote human rights and peace in Tigray, Ethiopia. We are writing this letter to complain yet again about the editorial policy of BBC World Service Amharic and Tigrigna programmes, which are consistently biased against the people of Tigray in Ethiopia. We have written in the past to the Chairperson of the BBC Board, Mr Richard Sharp, and the Director General, Mr Tim Davie, and have demonstrated several times in front of the BBC Headquarters to demand fair, accurate, balanced coverage and reporting of the crisis in Tigray.
2. Whilst the BBC Amharic and Tigrigna programmes, both the Online News and Radios, report extensively on a wide range of issues occurring in Ethiopia, the programmes deliberately and persistently omit major newsworthy issues pertaining to the crisis in Tigray. Specifically, we are referring to the New Lines Institute of Strategy and Policy Report on the war in Tigray which came out on 3 June 2024. “Genocide in Tigray: Serious breaches of international law in the Tigray conflict, Ethiopia, and paths to accountability” (New Lines Institute Report, 3 June 2024)
3. More than three years since the start of the Genocidal War in Tigray on 2 November 2020, the New Lines Institute – a non-partisan global think tank based in Washington, DC – has conclusively and specifically established after two years of research and analysis involving experts on humanitarian law and genocide, that the Ethiopian and Eritrean armies and the Amhara Regional Forces have committed genocide, ethnic cleansing, war crimes and crimes against humanity against the people of Tigray. This is notwithstanding that all parties to the conflict have committed war crimes. Characterised as the worst humanitarian catastrophe in the 21st Century, the genocidal war has claimed over 1 million Tigrayan lives, the sexual violence against 120,000 Tigrayan women and girls, weaponisation of hunger and starvation as a strategy of war, and the destruction of 85% of Tigray’s social fabric, economy and infrastructure. This landmark report follows the UN Human Rights Council sponsored report by the International Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia (ICHREE) Report (2023), the US Department of State Report (2023, 2024)) the UK Parliament Tigray Inquiry Report (2023), the Yale University Law School Report (2023), Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch Reports (2020, 2021, 2022, 2024) that established the commission of mass atrocities crimes including ethnic cleansing, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Tigray. Yet, the above catalogued reports received scant attention by BBC Amharic and Tigrigna programmes.
4. Such was the global newsworthy of the report by the New Lines Institute, it was reported amongst others by: ABC News, MSN News, CNN, Al Jazeera, Yahoo News, Reuters, AP, The Globe and Mail, Financial Times, The New Humanitarian, Worldpress.Com, The National Interest, I Africa, Africa Equity Media, Medafrica Times, Radio Alabama, Delta Daily Newspaper, Observer Diplomat, The East Africa Daily, Somali Times, The North Africa Post, Reddit, HRW and so on. Yet not a word from BBC Amharic or Tigrigna.
5. Yet careful monitoring of the BBC World Service Amharic and Tigrigna Online News and Radio broadcasts for the period 3 -7 June 2024 show there is no mention of the New Lines Institute Report on the war in Tigray that claimed a genocide have been committed against the people of Tigray. On what ground does a major report on genocide by a major institution led by internationally recognised legal experts and based on two years of study and research is considered not newsworthy by BBC Amharic and Tigrigna? Why do the BBC Amharic and Tigrigna programmes believe the people of Tigray and Ethiopians in general do not deserve to know about this report? Is this not a deliberate suppression of information that affected the lives of millions of Tigrayans? Is this not consistent with previous BBC Amharic and Tigrigna editorial policy of not reporting on pertinent issues regarding the conflict in Tigray. For example, in the past we complained when the BBC Amharic and Tigrigna Services failed to report the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Patriarch’s statement on the genocidal war against the people of Tigray. which was then globally reported.
6. The scant coverage of the genocidal war in Tigray and its consequences by the BBC World Service pales into insignificance when compared and contrasted with the saturated news coverage of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine or the Middle East. It appears to the BBC World Service that Tigrayan, Ethiopian or African lives matter less.
7. We humbly demand the BBC World Service, in particular the Amharic and Tigrigna Programmes, to stand by the BBC’s core values of impartiality, accuracy, fairness and factual reporting with no distortion or bias. Tigrayans all over the world demand the BBC maintains a high journalistic and moral standard as it did in the 1984 famine in Tigray and Ethiopia at large.
8. We have attached, for your information, the New Lines Institute Summary and Full Report on the Tigray Genocide published on 3 June 2024, The UN Human Rights Council International Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia Report on mass atrocity crimes committed in Tigray (2023), The UK Parliament Tigray Inquiry Report (2023) and the Yale University Law School Report on the Conflict in Tigray (2023). Numerous guests at the Stuttgart Spring Festival suffered from vomiting, diarrhea and nausea after visiting a festival tent. More than 400 visitors are said to be affected, and norovirus was detected in three cases. Now the operator speaks out.
Over the weekend, several hundred people were infected with a gastrointestinal virus in a festival tent on the Cannstatter Wasen. So far, 430 people have reported gastrointestinal complaints. A spokesman for the municipality announced this on Thursday. There were 400 cases last Saturday and 30 on Sunday.
All those affected visited the same festival tent at the weekend and then complained of vomiting, nausea and diarrhea. The spokesman said that there is a high number of unreported cases among those affected because the infection is certainly passed on within the family. So far, norovirus has been detected in three sick people.

In the video, an officer appears to prevent Mr Falter from crossing the road and tells him: “You are quite openly Jewish. This is a pro-Palestinian march. I am not accusing you of anything, but I am worried about the reaction to your presence.”

27-year-old Kamonnan Thiamphanit, known as Angela to friends, was heard screaming on the evening of Sunday 7 April by neighbours before her body was found by police on Monday.
The Metropolitan Police has referred itself to a watchdog after it emerged calls from friends concerned about her welfare were not acted upon.
Kamonnan Thiamphanit, 27, was found dead by police at a property on Stanhope Place in London’s plush Bayswater area on Monday morning, prompting investigation into reports of screams coming from the building over the weekend.
Neighbours living close to the £4million house, formerly serving the Ethiopian Embassy, told MailOnline they had heard loud music and shouting late on Saturday night and into the early hours of Sunday morning, hours before police received calls expressing concern for the dual-nationality Chinese/Hong Kong and Thai woman.
Police have now confirmed they are ‘supporting her devastated family and friends as best we can as they come to terms with their tragic loss’, noting Ms Thiamphanit, who worked in London, has relatives based overseas.
‘While our detectives are keeping an open mind regarding any motive, I can confirm they believe it is possible that her attacker was known to her,’ said Commander Owain Richards on Thursday.
Residents of the area told MailOnline they believe the house is rented out as an Airbnb-style holiday let and that it does not have any permanent residents, having previously served as the site of the Ethiopian diplomatic mission in the United Kingdom.
One wealthy local said the types of people leasing the property varied – but that most only tended to stay for a short time.
A resident living in Stanhope Place said: ‘All kinds of people rent it for a few days. In early March there were three women in the house who partied over the weekend and made lots of noise.
‘A Swedish family were in the property over Easter. I’ve never seen the victim and she wouldn’t have been in the house for very long. She would have come after Easter because this family were in the house before that.’
Recalling the events of the weekend he said: ‘We heard a lot of loud music coming from the house and it sounded as if they were having quite a party.
‘I remember discussing it with my family and we said that we’d like to speak to the owner but the problem is we don’t know who the owner is. There are lots of people coming and going at that property.’
The £4m home is spread across two floors and also has a basement and roof garden.
Alan Granberg, who lives in a mews home located behind the street, said on Saturday night three different riders accidentally knocked on his door with food deliveries meant for the house in Stanhope Place where Angela’s body was found.
He said: ‘There was lots of noise and music coming from the house and I told the delivery riders that I hadn’t ordered any food.
‘My house is also (the same house number) and whoever ordered the food couldn’t have been there for long and didn’t know the area well because they didn’t give the right directions.’
He added: ‘There are lots of homes in this area which are available on very short term lets. I’ve never seen this woman before and believe she’d only been there a few days.’

Anti-semitism campaigners have reacted with anger after a Metropolitan Police officer was filmed telling a Jewish woman swastikas being displayed during a pro-Palestinian march in London needed to be “taken in context”.
A London Metropolitan Police officer told a Jewish woman that a swastika is only antisemitic depending on the “context” it is used in after she complained about a placard being displayed during a pro-Palestinian march in London yesterday.
In video footage shared online, the woman asks two police officers: “If someone is carrying a sign with a swastika, you said you wouldn’t arrest them on the spot? They’d have to be investigated online?”
In response, the officer standing further back interjects, saying, “A swastika on its own, I don’t think it’s…” to which the woman filming the interaction says “Yes, it is.”
The first officer then tells the woman that she should “go away and have a look at” the Public Order Act legislation, as “it’s all about it it’s something likely to cause vast alarm and distress,” apparently suggesting that a swastika placard may not fit the legal definition of disturbing the public order.
Asked why he believes that displaying a swastika at a pro-Palestinian march could be deemed anything other than antisemitic, the officer says, “Everything needs to be taken in context, doesn’t it?”
Pushed again to explain a context in which the swastika can be displayed in a way that isn’t antisemitic, the officer tells the woman that he doesn’t have “an in-depth knowledge of signs and symbols.”
He does admit, however, that he knows “the swastika was used by the Nazi party during their inception and the period of them being in power in Germany in 1934.”

The show has been a feature of the channel’s festive programming since 2010 – but has been dropped in favour of other religious coverage.
It comes after flagship radio show Desert Island Discs sparked fury for inviting a prominent atheist on their Good Friday edition of the show.
Professor Alice Roberts, a scientist and the vice-president of the Humanists UK charity, turned down the chance to take a Bible with her alongside the complete works of Shakespeare – saying: ‘Well I’m not having the Bible, because I’m a humanist!’
The move has been slammed by Christian groups who claim the broadcaster is trying to ‘minimise’ the religion’s role in British culture.
‘The BBC’s motto, ‘Nation shall speak peace unto nation’, is Biblical in origin,’ Andrea Williams, the chief executive of Christian Concern, told The Telegraph.
