Scottish Ultra-Marathon Runner Blames Injury And Jetlag For Using Car In Race
Joasia Zakrzewski disqualified after 50-mile race
‘I made a massive error accepting the trophy’
A top Scottish ultra-marathon runner who was disqualified for using a car during a race has blamed an injury and jetlag for her decision to break the rules and then accept a trophy for third place.
Joasia Zakrzewski is facing calls for a life ban after being disqualified from the 2023 GB Ultras Manchester to Liverpool 50-mile race on 7 April, after it was later discovered she had travelled by car for about 2.5 miles.
However the 47-year-old from Dumfries told BBC Scotland that her behaviour had not been malicious – and that she had only got in a friend’s car because she had been limping and wanted to tell marshals that she was withdrawing. GPS data later showed the car covered one of those miles in one minute and 40 seconds.
“When I got to the checkpoint I told them I was pulling out and that I had been in the car, and they said ‘you will hate yourself if you stop’,” Dr Zakrzewski said. “I agreed to carry on in a non-competitive way. I made sure I didn’t overtake the runner in front when I saw her as I didn’t want to interfere with her race.”
Zakrzewski, who finished 14th in the 2014 Commonwealth Games marathon and has set records in the UK over 100 and 200 miles, admitted she was wrong to pose for pictures and to accept a wooden trophy and medal when she crossed the line.
However she claimed that arriving from Australia the night before had left her jetlagged and unable to think straight. “I made a massive error accepting the trophy and should have handed it back,” she said. “I was tired and jetlagged and felt sick. I hold my hands up, I should have handed them back and not had pictures done but I was feeling unwell and spaced out and not thinking clearly.”
Wayne Drinkwater, the director of the GB Ultras race, confirmed that Zakrzewski had been disqualified “having taken vehicle transport during part of the route”.
“The matter is now with the Trail Running Association and, in turn, UK Athletics as the regulatory bodies,” he added.
Yet despite widespread anger in the ultrarunning community, the Guardian has learned that Zakrzewski may yet escape further sanction as UK Athletics and Scottish Athletics are yet to agree on who has jurisdiction over her disciplinary case given she is no longer an elite funded athlete.
🏎️ Jay Leno Is Recovering After Suffering Serious Burn Injuries From a Gasoline Fire
Former Tonight Show host Jay Leno was seriously burned when one of his vehicles erupted in flames at his Los Angeles-based garage, according to TMZ. “Jay was in the L.A. garage where he stores his cars on Sunday when one of the cars erupted into flames without warning,” people with direct knowledge of the incident told TMZ, adding Leno was burned on the left side of his face.
The 72yo comedian was rushed to Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles, where he is currently recovering. Variety reported Leno suffered “serious burns” but is in stable condition.
“I got some serious burns from a gasoline fire. I am ok. Just need a week or two to get back on my feet,” the comedian said in a statement.
Leno was expected to attend The Financial Brand conference in Las Vegas Sunday, but organizers said he suffered a “very serious medical emergency” that prevented him from attending.
“His family was not able to provide us very many details, but there was a very serious medical emergency that is preventing Jay from traveling.
“All we know is that he is alive, so our prayers go out to him and his family tonight,” according to an email from organizers.
Leno’s garage is located next to Burbank Airport in Los Angeles County. It’s reported he has 181 classic and rare cars and 160 motorcycles.
“Given the current market values, Jay Leno’s car collection is worth over $52 million,” DuPont Registry wrote in a blog post in July.
💭 Tesla owner will never lose his car key again – after he implants a chip in his hand to unlock his vehicle.
Brandon Dalaly spent over $400 to have the keys permanently implanted in his hand using a microchip, NY Post reported.
Video of Tesla owner implants chip in hand for car key. The video shows him having a chip implanted in his hand by a professional piercer. He then used the back of his hand to unlock his Tesla.
Chips replace keys
The VivoKey Apex chip is contactless and coated in a biocompatible substance. It uses a similar near-field communication (NFC) technology used by Apple Pay, reported Business Insider.
He also has another smaller chip implanted in his left hand. This chip stores the keys to his house, as well as his contact and medical information.
“The whole idea was that I would have my house key in my left hand and my car key in my right hand,” he told Teslarati.
The Tesla owner is a part of a beta group consisting of 100 people who test the chip and its potential capabilities.
VivoKey Apex is a “NFC secure element chip that runs small software programs called Java Card applets,” as mentioned on VivoKey’s website.
“The company that put this together literally has its own app store where you can wirelessly install apps into your body with these chips,” Dalaly said in Teslarati report.
He laughed at critics and viewers of the video online who expressed concern for his safety.
“We’re at the dawn of this technology and it’s a very niche product. And there’s been a lot of pushback. People thought that Bill Gates was putting tracking chips in the Covid vaccine. It fuels a lot of conspiracy theories.”
He also shared that some people called him Satan’s worshipper after seeing the mark of the chip installation on his hand.
