✞ The cause of the fire that disrupted an Easter Sunday mass in Brooklyn is still under investigation, but Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii is an old church with old electrical wiring – and a lot of wood.

The fire destroyed the rectory section of the building – which is more like classrooms and office space than a clergy residence. The actual church where services are held is in better shape thanks to firefighters who took steps to keep the flames from spreading.

Before the fire raged to five alarms — taking about two hundred firefighters and four hours to get under control – a congregation was gathered inside the Bushwick church to celebrate the 1 p.m. Easter mass in Spanish, led by Fr. Romulo Marin.

Fr. Marin says when smoke began wafting into the service, nearly 200 parishioners evacuated safely while he went to try to put it out with a fire extinguisher – but the flames were starting to eat through the second floor, which was crumbling.

“And the floor collapsed,” Fr. Marin said.

He tells Eyewitness News that is when he knew he needed to get out. Firefighters were there quickly and were having their own trouble with the collapsing second floor. One firefighter fell through a hole, prompting others to issue a mayday call, fearing he was hurt.

“He didn’t realize that the mayday was for him, so he bounced up off the floor, came in and wanted to run back up the stairs to address the mayday issue. But not realizing that the mayday was himself, he was unhurt, thank God, and he was able to continue to fight the fire,” said FDNY Assistant Chief Michael Myers.

The fire was smoky and stubborn – parishioners at the church established more than a hundred years ago, spent their holiest day of the calendar thankful for the firefighters’ efforts and that no one was badly hurt – but they were also feeling heartbroken.

“It’s one of the churches around for a long time – the history that develops among people individually. So this is hurting everybody that worships here,” said John Quaglione of the Brooklyn Diocese.

Fr. Marin says he believes sometimes God destroys the old to make way for the new – and on this day celebrating resurrection, his only hope is that his church will come back stronger. As he and worshippers evacuated, the FDNY says they were wise to close the door separating the fire in the back of the building from the main worship space.

“Keep the door closed, because that contains the fire. And thankfully, we were able to save the church. Part of the structure has some water damage but is undamaged overall. And I think that’s God looking down on us today, on Easter Sunday, and saving at least that part of the building,” added Myers.

The other good news is that all injuries were minor. Two firefighters were sent to the hospital, but everyone else was treated at the scene.

♱ The faithful of St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church in Adelaide, South Australia, celebrated Matins and the Divine Liturgy outside on Sunday, March 31, after their church suffered severe fire damage.

The blaze occurred the evening before, the Archdiocese of Australia announced, reports vema.com.au.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and managed to extinguish the flames quickly, though the church nevertheless suffered considerable damage. Investigators do not believe the fire was intentional. “The parishioners of the Parish of Saint Andrew are devastated, but at the same time determined to help each in their own way to repair the damage.”

Bishop Silouan of Sinope, Vicar of Adelaide, offered his condolences:

“Tragedies are always unwanted and unexpected, even if, with God’s help, they are accepted. During this sacred period of Great Lent our thoughts and prayers are intensified, while being immersed in even more compunction. The Church will be rebuilt because the Church is Christ. The Church is never destroyed because it is crucified and glorified, humbled and exalted. The Church is forever excelling in brilliance through the radiance of its perpetual resurrection.

The parish faithful “are unwavering in their determination to soon restore their church to its former beauty and glory and to beautify it even more for the glory of God.”

🔥 A fire broke out in a nightclub during renovations, leaving at least 27 people dead and others badly hurt, officials and reports said. Several people have been detained for questioning.

The nightclub was on the ground floor of a 16-story residential building in the Besiktas district on the European side of the city bisected by the Bosphorus.

🔥 ISTANBUL FIRES DURING THE OTTOMAN PERIOD AND THEIR EFFECT ON THE CITY’S TOPOGRAPHY

When it comes to disasters, the first events that come to mind are fires, along with earthquakes, which are not preventable; these have been described as kıyâmet-i suğrâ (little apocalypses). This is an apt description of the fires that have occurred in Istanbul. The fact that the threat of fire occupied the subconscious of the state and the public until the middle of the 20th century is proof of this assertion. Also, many Western travelers who ventured into the Ottoman lands and wrote about their travels dedicated special sections to fires in their chapters on Istanbul; this, too, serves as evidence of this fear. The literature suggests that fires were perceived by the public as inevitable and destined to be repeated. The statement by James Dallaway that “fires are so frequent that few months pass without them”1 confirms this. In addition, the adage “the fires of Istanbul, the epidemics of Anatolia”2 represents the significant place that this type of disaster occupied in people’s minds.

The first edict that directed a radical shift from wood to stone as the prevalent construction material in Istanbul was enacted in the 17th century,3 but change did not really yield positive results until the 19th century. There were many reasons behind this delay, among them the frequent large earthquakes in the region, the high cost of stone construction materials in terms of labor and transportation, the greater necessity urging people to reconstruct their houses shortly after disasters, and the fact that wooden buildings were easily heated and altered or renovated. It is also clear that with every fire, changes in the topographical structure of the city appeared.

Throughout the centuries of Ottoman Istanbul, dozens of fires occurred; some were so great that they were given names such as ihrâk ı azîm, harîk i kebîr, and harîk-i ekber. These fires completely destroyed the city. There is an old saying that fires prevented the thresholds from being filled with gold summarizes Istanbul’s struggle with fires. The fact that between 1563 and 1600, a period of 37 years, the number of fires was recorded as 17 by Selaniki, makes this proverb ring true.5

💭 “Germany’s worst period should not be printed on a jersey,” the German historian Michael König said.

⚽ Adidas has banned fans from personalizing the German national team jersey with the number “44” after outrage over the resulting resemblance to Nazi symbolism.

Historian Michael König appears to have been one of the first people to notice the resemblance between the “44” and the symbol for the “Schutzstaffel,” also known as the SS, which was responsible for planning and carrying out the Holocaust under Adolf Hitler. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, last Friday, König included screenshots of Germany’s national team jersey, which is sold by the company, with the number “44” and said it was “questionable” to allow the shirts.

König’s post quickly gained steam. As of Tuesday morning, it had been viewed more than 7.4 million times on X and prompted many media articles on Adidas’s blunder.

“It was a shock for me to see the numbers like that. It reminded me directly of the SS runes,” König, who is German himself, told Gizmodo via direct messages. “And I don’t understand why nobody at Adidas saw it.”

Fans were able to choose the number “44” because Adidas allows them to personalize some of their apparel with specific names or numbers. In light of the criticism, Adidas quickly disabled the personalization option for the jerseys in its online store.

In a statement to Gizmodo on Tuesday, Adidas tried to shake off the criticism and pointed out that the German Football Association, or DFB, and its partner, soccer apparel merchant 11teamsports, were responsible for the design of the names and numbers on the jerseys.

“Our company stands for the promotion of diversity and inclusion, and as a company we actively oppose xenophobia, anti-Semitism, violence, and hatred in any form,” Adidas said. “Any attempts to promote divisive or exclusionary views are not part of our values as a brand, and we firmly reject any suggestion that this was our intention. Our company stands for the promotion of diversity and inclusion.”

The German Football Association responded to the backlash over the jersey on Monday in a post on X. The association explained that it checks the numbers 1-9 and then sends numbers 1-26 to UEFA, the governing body for soccer in Europe, for review, according to a Google translation of the text.

“None of the parties involved saw any proximity to Nazi symbolism in the development process of the jersey design,” the German Football Association said. “Nevertheless, we take the information very seriously and do not want to provide a platform for discussions.”

The association added that it was working with 11teamsports on an alternative design for the number 4.

König, the historian, said he applauded the swift response to the situation from Adidas. He said that certain groups of people shouldn’t be able to express their right-wing views to the outside world. That would have been possible, König pointed out, with the “44” on Germany’s team jersey. He added that the issue is of even higher importance because Germany was hosting the UEFA European Championship this summer.

“Germany’s worst period should not be printed on a jersey,” König said.
