🌞 Solar Storm Sparks Colorful Northern Lights Unusually Far South Into U.S. And Europe

As aurora watchers waited and wondered Thursday night, for a time it seemed possible the latest blast from the sun could end up a northern lights bust. But then, there was light.

A geomagnetic storm reaching G3 levels, which is considered strong on a scale of 1 to 5, roared in shortly before the sun began to rise Friday morning on the East Coast, arriving several hours later than expected. Colorful aurora borealis were reported at least as far south as Arizona in the United States, with vibrant displays reported at higher latitudes. The Southern Hemisphere has also checked in with its own dancing lights in the sky.

The display came after the sun sent four bursts of plasma, known as coronal mass ejections or CMEs, hurtling toward Earth earlier this week. Space weather forecasters had expected three of the blasts would combine into an intense “cannibal” CME that could trigger auroras unusually far south into the United States and Europe.

The most intense solar storms can cause significant disruptions on Earth, including blackouts in radio communications and global positioning satellites, or even power systems more broadly. Storms of G3 intensity tend to produce only minor impacts to technological infrastructure while often producing shows of brilliant auroras.

How long will the solar storm last?

The multiple CMEs may allow auroras to be more prolonged than in most space weather events. While uncertain, it’s possible that the ongoing storm will persist into Friday night for the United States. In the meantime, other regions may witness dazzling displays, as night returns to Asia and Europe.

Curious Double Moon Discovered Orbiting Asteroid ‘Dinky’ Now Has A Name

The first asteroid target of NASA’s Lucy mission hosts an unexpected “contact binary” satellite. Scientists have named it “Selam.”

Something serendipitous happened in early November. It had to do with NASA’s Lucy spacecraft, a solar-winged probe currently on its way to investigate a trove of ancient asteroids locked in Jupiter‘s orbit around the sun. They’re called the Trojans, and they’re believed to be leftover blocks from the box that built our solar system.

But we’re not talking about the mighty Trojans right now. We’re talking about a little space object named Selam.

Here is Selam’s story.

On Nov. 1, Lucy flew by one of its non-Trojan targets; you can think of these like stepping stones (stepping asteroids, rather) on the mission’s grander path. Asteroid number one’s name is Dinkinesh, or as scientists adorably call it, “Dinky.” Soon after, however, on Nov. 2, the Lucy team announced a surprise. Dinkinesh isn’t just one, but rather a binary system of two asteroids! In other words, Dinky had its very own moon. The scientists were thrilled. Little did they know, Dinky was about to surprise us once more.

So, on Nov. 29, the Lucy team confirmed that we finally have a name for Dinky’s little contact-binary friend: Selam.

“Dinkinesh is the Ethiopian name for the fossil nicknamed ‘Lucy,'” Raphael Marshall of the Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur in France, who originally identified Dinkinesh as a potential target of the Lucy mission, said in a statement. “It seemed appropriate to name its satellite in honor of another fossil that is sometimes called Lucy’s baby.”

The fossil Selam, NASA explains, was discovered by Zeresenay Alemseged in 2000 in Dikika, Ethiopia. It’s believed to have belonged to a 3-year-old girl of the same species as Lucy, one of the first hominin fossils to become a household name as the Natural History Museum says. Selam, however, is thought to have lived more than 100,000 years before Lucy. Wonderfully, Selam translates from Ethiopian language Amharic to “peace,” while Dinkinesh translates to “you are marvelous.”

“Dinkinesh really did live up to its name; this is marvelous,” Levison had said at the time of its moon’s discovery.

Now, the team intends to study both Dinkinesh and Selam in greater detail to understand precisely how this asteroid-ception arose in the first place. Thanks to Lucy’s onboard instruments such as the high-resolution L’LORRI camera and Terminal Tracking Cameras, there’s probably a solid amount of information to go on.

💭 ‘Selam’ means ‘Peace’, in Ethiopic. The fossil Selam, NASA explains, was discovered by the Ethiopian paleoanthropologist Zeresenay Alemseged – and he was born in Axum.

Russia’s Roscosmos space agency’s former boss Dmitry Rogozin, believes that the US Apollo 11 mission was faked and that American astronauts never landed on the Moon. He further questions why, all of a sudden, did the US stop sending manned missions to the Moon.

Dmitry Rogozin, the former head of Russia’s Roscosmos space agency, has ruffled some feathers among global astronomy circles. Rogozin has voiced his scepticism on the narrative of whether the US Apollo 11 mission ever landed on the Moon in 1969, claiming that he has yet to see sufficient proof.

In a post on his Telegram channel on Sunday, Rogozin said he began his personal quest for the truth “about ten years ago” when he was still working in the Russian government, and that he became sceptical about whether the Americans had actually set foot on the Moon when he saw how exhausted Soviet cosmonauts looked upon returning from their flights, compared to how seemingly unaffected the Apollo 11 crew appeared.

Rogozin stated that at the time, he addressed requests for evidence to Roscosmos. All he got in return was a book with Soviet Cosmonaut Aleksey Leonov’s story of how he met the American astronauts and learned they had travelled to the Moon.

When he was named head of Roscosmos in 2018, the former official said that he maintained his work. However, no proof was offered to Rogozin, according to him. Instead, he was chastised by numerous anonymous academics for damaging the “sacred cooperation with NASA,” as he claimed.

The former Roscosmos boss also claimed to have “received an angry phone call from a top-ranking official” accusing him of complicated foreign ties.

Rogozin finished by remarking that despite enormous technological advances since the late 1960s, the US was able to carry off the feat but is now unable to do so.

He also claims to have discovered that Washington has “its people in [the Russian] establishment.”

The Apollo 11 mission was the first manned journey to the Moon, with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin being the first people to walk on the lunar surface.

The unmanned Soviet Luna 2 programme, which paved the way for Moon exploration, came before the trip.

President Vladimir Putin committed in April to restart Russia’s lunar programme.

🛑 An asteroid which entered the earth’s atmosphere in the early hours of this morning, Monday February 13, has been captured on camera lighting up the sky over Southern England and France.

The one-metre asteroid – named Sar2667 was seen shortly before 3am as it exploded over the English Channel.

The explosion occurred as it entered the Earth’s atmosphere and it was visible from across most of southern Englandf and Wales, and as far south as Paris.

For only the seventh time ever, scientists were able to predict when and where the airburst would happen, after spotting its approach just hours before.

“Can’t believe I actually caught it. Wow!” the caption accompanying the video said.

The ESA tweeted that Sar2667 was expected to “safely” strike the Earth’s atmosphere over northern France shortly before 4 a.m. local time (3 a.m. local time in England).

“This is just the seventh time an #asteroidimpact has ever been predicted before it happens.” the ESA tweeted. “A sign of the rapid advancements in global asteroid detection capabilities!”

👉 What Are Asteroids?

Asteroids are rocky remnants left over from the early formation of our solar system about 4.6 billion years ago, Nasa says. The current known asteroid count is 1,266,098.

The majority are orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter within the main asteroid belt. They range in size from Vesta – the largest at about 329 miles in diameter – to bodies that are less than 33ft across.

The total mass of all the asteroids combined is less than that of Earth’s Moon.

Jupiter’s immense gravity and rare close counters with other objects can change their orbits, knocking them out of the main belt into space, occasionally towards other planets.

Scientists continuously monitor Earth-crossing asteroids – those whose paths intersect our orbit – using radar.

By reflecting transmitted signals off an asteroid, images and other information can be derived from the echoes, enabling scientists to learn about its orbit, rotation, size, shape, and metal concentration.

The last known impact of an object of 10km or more in diameter was the Chicxulub asteroid that killed off the dinosaurs 66 million years ago.

The asteroid Bennu, which has a diameter of 525m, is believed to be the most likely to strike Earth. Research published last year gave it a one in 1,750 chance of colliding in the next three centuries.

🌞 ‘Scientists have been left stumped after a piece of the sun’s surface broke off and began circling the sun’s north pole like a vortex.

Earlier this week, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope made an unprecedented observation that has made scientists both concerned and excited.

Space weather forecaster Tamitha Shov shared a video sequence showing the intense whirlwind.

“Talk about polar vortex! Material from a northern prominence just broke away from the main filament & is now circulating in a massive polar vortex around the north pole of our star,” she said.

“Implications for understanding the sun’s atmospheric dynamics above 55° here cannot be overstated!”

SpaceWeather.com reported that a medium-sized, powerful solar flare even knocked out a shortwave radio over the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday (February 7).

According to NASA, an eruptive solar prominence, also known as a filament, is a large, bright feature that extends outwards from the sun’s surface.

Prominences are anchored to the sun’s surface and extend outwards in the sun’s hot outer atmosphere – called the CORONA.

NASA released the latest image from its James Webb Space Telescope on Tuesday, showing tens of thousands of young stars in a stellar nursery dubbed the “Cosmic Tarantula.”

The nebula, located 161,000 light-years away, is the largest star-forming region of all galaxies close to the Milky Way. 

Radiation from young stars, which glow pale blue, has hollowed out a cavity in the nebula that can be seen in the center of the image.

“Only the densest surrounding areas of the nebula resist erosion by these stars’ powerful stellar winds, forming pillars that appear to point back toward the cluster,” NASA explained. “These pillars contain forming protostars, which will eventually emerge from their dusty cocoons and take their turn shaping the nebula.”

The powerful telescope uses infrared light to produce a detailed image of the far-off gas giant.

For the first time ever, astronomers at NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and Canadian Space Agency (CSA) captured a direct image of an exoplanet using the James Webb Space Telescope. Extra solar planets, or exoplanets, are planets that exist outside of our solar system.

Researchers are currently analyzing the new data from these observations and are working on a paper for peer review. The findings are currently published in a preprint. But Webb’s first capture of an exoplanet already hints at future possibilities for studying distant worlds.

JWST captured the image of the inhabitable gas giant called HIP 65426 b located about 385 light-years away from Earth. It is roughly six to 12 times the mass of Jupiter (our solar system’s biggest planet) and astronomers believe that their observations could help narrow down that estimate. Compared to 4.5 billion-year-old Planet Earth, HIP 65426 b is only 15 to 20 million years-old, so still a young one as far as planets go.

“This is a transformative moment, not only for Webb but also for astronomy generally,” said Sasha Hinkley, associate professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, who led these observations with a large international collaboration, in a NASA blog.

The image released by NASA/ESA/CSA shows the exoplanet through four different light filters. Unlike the human eye, JWST can see the universe in infrared light, which gives astronomers more precise measurements of an exoplanet’s mass and temperature and can even detect clouds moving in a distant planet’s sky. The infrared light pointing the way to future observations that will reveal more information than ever before about exoplanets.

JWST’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) have coronagraphs. These are sets of tiny masks that can block out starlight and enable the telescope to take direct images of certain exoplanets like HIP 65426 b. NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, which is scheduled to launch this decade, will demonstrate an even more advanced coronagraph.

“It was really impressive how well the Webb coronagraphs worked to suppress the light of the host star,” said Hinkley.

While this specific image is new to astronomers, HIP 65426 b is not. The exoplanet was first detected in 2017 using the SPHERE instrument located at the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Very Large Telescope in northern Chile. The ground-based telescope took images of the exoplanet using short infrared wavelengths of light. JWST is able to capture longer infrared wavelengths, revealing some new details that ground-based telescopes can’t necessarily see due to the intrinsic infrared glow of Earth’s atmosphere.

While more than 5,000 exoplanets have been discovered, taking direct images of them is incredibly challenging. Exoplanets revolve around a star just like Earth revolves around the sun, and those stars are typically much brighter than planets. According to NASA, HIP 65426 b is more than 10,000 times fainter than its host star in the near-infrared and a few thousand times fainter in the mid-infrared.

ይህ የተነሳው ከምድራችን በሦስት መቶ ሃምሳ ኪሎሜትር ከፍታ ላይ ከሚገኘውና ዓለማችንን በመዞር ላይ ካለው ከአለም አቀፉ የጠፈር ምርምር መእከል (ISS) ነው። ይህን ቪዲዮ በአጋጣሚ ማታ ላይ ማየቴ ነበር። አስገራሚ ነው…እንዴት እንደገባሁ እንኳን አላውቅም።

ቅድስት ድንግል ማርያም በ፶፻፬፻፹፭ ዓመተ ዓለም ከሐና እና ከኢያቄም በፈቃደ እግዚአብሔር ተወልዳ እስከ ሦስት ዓመት ድረስ የኖረችው በወላጆቿ ቤት ነበር፡፡ ከዚህ በኋላ ኢያቄምና ሐና የተሳሉትን ስእለታቸውን አስታውሰው ወስደው ለቤተ እግዚአብሔር ሰጧት፤ ካህኑ ዘካርያስም ስለምግቧ በመጨነቁ ሕዝቡን ሰብስቦ ሳለ መልአኩ ፋኑኤል ኅብስት ሰማያዊ ጽዋዕ ይዞ ከሰማይ ወረደ፤ ዘካርያስ ለእርሱ የመጣ ሀብት መስሎት ታጥቆ እጅ ነስቶ ቢቆም ወደ ላይ ራቀበት፡፡ ከስምዖን ጀምሮ በዚያ የተሰበሰቡት ሰዎችም በተራ ቢሞክሩ በተመሳሳይ ወደ ላይ ራቀባቸው፡፡ ምን አልባት ለእንግዶች የመጣ ሀብት እንደሆነ ብለው ሐና እና ኢያቄም እንዲቀርቡ አደረጓቸው፤ ለእነርሱም ራቀባቸው፤ ዘካርያስም ሐናን ‹‹እግዚአብሔር የሚያደርገውን የሚያውቅ የለምና ልጅቷን ትተሸ ወደዚህ ነይ›› ባላት ጊዜ ቅድስት ማርያም ድክ ድክ እያለች እናቷን ስትከተል መልአኩ ፋኑኤል ወደ እርሷ ቀርቦ አንድ ክንፉን አንጥፎ አንድ ክንፉን ጋርዶ መግቧት ዐረገ፤ ሊቀ ካህናቱም ሕዝቡም የምግቧ ነገር ከተያዘልን በቤት እግዚአብሔር ትኑር ብለው አስገብተዋታል፡፡

ድንግል ማርያምም ሰማያዊ ኅብስትና መጠጥ እየተመገበች ፲፪ ዓመት በቤተ መቅደስ ኖረች፡፡ ፲፭ ዓመት ሲሞላት ግን ለአቅመ ሔዋን በመድረሷ ከቤተ መቅደስ ትውጣልን በማለት አይሁድ በጠላትነት ተነሱባት፡፡ ካህኑ ዘካርያስም ይህን ሰምቶ እመቤታችንን ጠየቃት «ኦ ወለተ እስራኤል እፎ ትፈቅዲ ትንበሪ፤ ልጄ እንደምን ሆነሽ ልትኖሪ ትወጂያለሽ?» አላት፡፡ እርሷም «ከእግዚአብሐር በታች ያለኸኝ አባት አንተ ነህ፤ በዚያውም ላይ እናት አባቴ አደራ ያሉህ አንተን ነው፤ ወደ እግዚአብሔር አመልክትልኝ፤» አለችው፡፡ ዘካርያስም ጸለየ፤ እግዚአብሔርም ከነገደ ይሁዳ ሚስቶቻቸው የሞቱባቸውን በትራቸውን ሰብስበህ በቀዳማይ ሰዓተ ሌሊት ከቤተ መቅደስ አግብተህ ስትጸልይ አድረህ በቀዳማይ ሰዓተ መዓልት አውጣው ብሎ ምልክትም እሳይህአለው ብሎ ነገረው፡፡ እርሱም እንዳለው አድርጎ በማግሥቱ በትሮቹን አውጥተው ቢያዩ የዮሴፍ በትር አብባና አፍርታ ተገኘች፡፡ ከበትሩ ጫፍ ላይ «ኦ ዮሴፍ ወልደ ዳዊት ዕቀባ ለማርያም ፍኅርትከ፤ ዮሴፍ ሆይ እጮኛህ ማርያምን ጠብቃት፤» የሚል ጽሑፍ አገኙ፤ርግብም መጥታ በራሱ ላይ አርፋለች፤ ስለሆነም ዮሴፍ እንዲጠብቃት ተወሰነ፡፡
