💭 SpaceX’s Starlink, the satellite communications service started by billionaire Elon Musk, now has a Department of Defense contract to buy those satellite services for Ukraine, the Pentagon said on Thursday.

“We continue to work with a range of global partners to ensure Ukraine has the resilient satellite and communication capabilities they need. Satellite communications constitute a vital layer in Ukraine’s overall communications network and the department contracts with Starlink for services of this type,” the Pentagon said in a statement.

Starlink has been used by Ukrainian troops for a variety of efforts, including battlefield communications.

SpaceX, through private donations and under a separate contract with a U.S. foreign aid agency, has been providing Ukrainians and the country’s military with Starlink internet service, a fast-growing network of more than 4,000 satellites in low Earth orbit, since the beginning of the war in 2022.

The Pentagon contract is a boon for SpaceX after Musk, the company’s CEO, said in October it could not afford to indefinitely fund Starlink in Ukraine, an effort he said cost $20 million a month to maintain.

Russia has tried to cut off and jam internet services in Ukraine, including attempts to block Starlink in the region, though SpaceX has countered those attacks by hardening the service’s software.

The Pentagon did not disclose the terms of the contract, which Bloomberg reported earlier on Thursday, “for operational security reasons and due to the critical nature of these systems.”

According to NASA, an eruptive solar prominence, also known as a filament, is a large, bright feature that extends outwards from the sun’s surface.

Prominences are anchored to the sun’s surface and extend outwards in the sun’s hot outer atmosphere – called the CORONA.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos have both reportedly invested in Synchron, a new brain-computer interface startup that aims to compete with companies like Elon Musk’s Neuralink.

Bloomberg reports that in March of last year, Tom Oxley, an expert in brain-computer interfaces, had dinner with Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, to discuss Oxley’s newly established company, Synchron Inc. During the dinner, which took place in Ojai, California, Bezos expressed interest in investing in the business.

On Thursday, Synchron announced that it had completed a funding round of $75 million, with Bezos Expeditions contributing a portion of the investment. The round was led by ARCH Venture Partners and included investment from Gates Frontier, the venture capital branch of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, as well as other investors. In addition, several previous investors, including Khosla Ventures and its founder, Vinod Khosla, who introduced Oxley to Gates, also participated in the funding round.

Brain-computer interfaces, also known as BCIs, have the potential to interpret and stimulate certain areas of the brain and are being explored as a possible treatment for brain injuries. According to Oxley in an interview, the new investors approached Synchron “through the lens of making an impact in neurology in an area of need.” Oxley estimates that approximately 100 million people worldwide have upper limb impairment and could potentially benefit from this technology.

This funding brings Synchron’s total funding to $145 million, making it one of the highest-funded companies in the brain-computer interface (BCI) space, according to research firm Pitchbook. While it may be behind companies such as Elon Musk’s Neuralink Corporation and Max Hodak’s Science Corp. in terms of fundraising, it is still far ahead of many other BCI companies. This is a significant achievement, especially considering the costly process of getting BCIs approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Synchron has already enrolled three patients in a U.S. trial, with two of them receiving the implant. Oxley expects the remaining patients to enroll and receive their implants in the coming months. Over the course of a year, doctors will observe these patients and report their findings to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In the past, the FDA granted Synchron “breakthrough” status, which streamlined the approval process for the company.

Many observers are concerned about the implications of Musk’s satanic costume, which they see as an intentional reflection of his beliefs and identity.

Elon Musk, the new CEO of Twitter and the richest man in the world, donned a “Devil’s Champion” costume to a Halloween bash on Monday evening, complete with a Baphomet icon and an upside-down cross.

Musk wore the red leather, gladiator-like costume from the shop Abracadabra NYC to model Heidi Klum’s 21st annual Halloween party at New York City’s Moxy Hotel, the Associated Press reported.

One Twitter user compared the costume’s insignia, which emblazoned a chest plate as well as two arm plates, to a satanic baphomet image that likewise sports an inverted cross, showing their close resemblance to each other.

While Musk is widely praised by conservatives for his free speech stance, his outfit immediately sparked concern, among Christians especially, over its blatantly satanic imagery.

“Musk’s take on free speech should be celebrated but as of right now it’s quite fair to question why the world’s richest man, who is also a major U.S. Defense contractor (SpaceX) and is the owner of [Neuralink], a company attempting to hook the human brain up to computers, is wearing the Baphomet coupled with inverted crosses as if it’s a badge of honor,” remarked Anthony Scott for the Gateway Pundit.

One of the most “liked” responses to Musk’s costume on Twitter was, “I love when they tell you exactly who they are like this. And then people think you’re crazy when you simply pay attention.”

While mainstream media commentators have disparaged apprehension over the costume as needless “obsession” over something “harmless,” the costume does call into question Musk’s beliefs, loyalties and spiritual practices, other remarks by Musk considered, since the satanic Baphomet image traditionally represents evil.

As Scott has suggested, his true beliefs are consequential not only because of his wealth and his popularity with the youth, but because of the potentially unprecedented human influence baked into a brain-computer interface (BCI) implant being developed by his company Neuralink.

Musk believes use of such BCIs will soon become commonplace and has predicted on a May 2020 Joe Rogan podcast that humans will “telepathically” communicate with each other within “five to 10 years” if progress goes smoothly.

Such technology raises hugely consequential ethical questions that can be approached in very different ways depending on one’s moral framework.

While Musk’s moral beliefs are unclear, his interviews and comments indicate that he rejects God and traditional religions. He shared in an interview earlier this year that he does not “worship” anything, but instead “devote[s]” himself “to the advancement of humanity.”

When actor Rainn Wilson asked Musk if he prayed, he responded, “I didn’t even pray when I almost died of malaria.”

Musk also flippantly addressed the idea of going to hell earlier this year, after a man named Mohammed asked Musk to “confess” that there is a God before his “last heartbeat.”

“Thank you for the blessing, but I’m ok with going to hell, if indeed that is my destination, since the vast majority of all humans ever born will be there,” Musk replied.

Although some climate change activists claim overpopulation is a serious problem that contributes to global warming and must be curtailed, investor and business giant Elon Musk said it is a “false impression” that there are too many people in the world, and added that the “Earth could maintain a population many times the current level.”

During a recent interview on WELT, German publishing titan Mathias Dopfner said to Musk, “You once told me about population decline — the decrease of reproduction rates, birth rate — is one of the most underestimated problems of our times. Please explain.”

Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, said, “Yes. Most people in the world are operating under the false impression that we’ve got too many people. This is not true. Earth could maintain a population many times the current level. The birth rate has been dropping like crazy.”

“So, unfortunately, we have these ridiculous population estimates from the U.N. that need to be updated because they just do not make any sense,” he said. “You can look and see, what was the birth rate last year, how many kids were born, and then multiply that by life expectancy – okay, so that’s how many people will be alive in the future.”

“Is the trend for birth rate positive or negative?” said Musk. “It’s negative. And that’s the best case, unless something changes for the birth rate. Take Japan, for example. I think the population is roughly 110 million. But last year, if you take the number of children born times the life expectancy – 85 years, very impressive life expectancy – then Japan would have, I think, around 68 million people, roughly half of the current population.”

“That doesn’t tell the whole story because you have an upside-down demographic pyramid,” Musk added. “We already have an upside-down demographic pyramid, where there’s a lot of old people, very few young people. So, the upside-down demographic pyramid is unstable.”
