Mohamed’s district in Columbus, Ohio, is home to more than 45,000 Somalis. He campaigned primarily in Somali, promising to “represent the interests of Somalia.”
According to the Columbus Dispatch, Mohamed, the incumbent in the district, defeated fellow Somali immigrant Abdirizak Diini, capturing 55 percent to Diini’s 33 percent.
He said he is running to “ensure every student has access to high-quality, equitable education,” and to advocate for funding to support affordable, accessible housing and secure neighborhoods. He said he would work tirelessly with business and union leaders to ensure all Ohioans “have access to careers, not just jobs.”

☪ Muslims make up nearly a fifth of all prisoners in England and Wales as of September of last year, with 15,594 inmates belonging to the Islamic faith, government data has revealed.
While Muslims only make up around 6.5 per cent of the British population overall, they account for around 18 per cent of the prison population according to data from the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), The Telegraph reports.
In comparison, Christians made up the largest religious group in prisons at 45 per cent, however, according to the 2021 Census, Christians represented 46 per cent of the population of England and Wales, meaning that as a group, people who profess to be Christian are incarcerated broadly proportionately.
Meanwhile, those who were not affiliated with any religious group comprised 31 per cent of the prison population, compared to 37 per cent of the population as a whole.
The Ministry of Justice figures also revealed that white people made up a disproportionate number of Muslim inmates, with 19.9 per cent of Islamic prisoners, or 3,096, being recorded as white. This is compared to white people making up just 7.8 per cent of the Muslim community in the UK.
This comes in contrast to 35 per cent (5,489) of Muslim prisoners being recorded as being “Asian or Asian British” and 27 per cent (4,212) were recorded as “Black or Black British”, while the remainder were either unrecorded or were of mixed background.
The strikingly high percentage of white Muslims within the prison population has been attributed by some as a result of conversions out of fear, with Muslims representing a powerful force within many British prisons.
Former Prison Governor Ian Acheson, who conducted a review of Islamist extremism in prisons for the MoJ, said: “There’s strong evidence that people convert as a pragmatic response to who controls power and space in our prisons.
“This seems to be the case in high-security prisons, in particular, where safety is at a premium and there are also large numbers of violent young men entering custody searching for meaning and belonging. So Islam in this case has gang characteristics”.
Acheson said that while authentic conversions could not be ruled out, he said it was important for frontline prison staff to not act out of fear of being accused of racism or direct intimidation tactics by prison gangs.
Another review into Islam in prisons, by government advisor Colin Bloom found last year that “failure to identify as a Muslim meant that at best the new prisoner would be denied ‘protection’ from the dominant Muslim gang on that wing, or at worst the new prisoner would be subjected to violence and intimidation from that same gang”.
A Ministry of Justice spokesman denied that the disproportionate white Muslim population was a result of forced conversions, saying: “Attributing these figures to the influence of Muslim gangs would be misleading and based on wholly anecdotal evidence. Forced religious conversions are not tolerated in prisons.”

For years, it has been examined whether the state of Berlin was allowed to confiscate properties belonging to the Remmo clan. After years of legal dispute, the family villa in Neukölln is now being evacuated – with great media interest.
It is the capital’s most famous clan property: the Remmo Villa. A Wilhelminian style house in Alt-Buckow in the south of Berlin-Neukölln – 164 square meters, eight rooms, a large garden. After a years-long legal dispute between the Neukölln district office and the family of Arab origin, the property will be forcibly evacuated this Wednesday morning .
The property is one of 77 properties that were seized by the Berlin public prosecutor’s office and the State Criminal Police Office in the summer of 2018. Investigators were convinced that the properties were financed with money from crime. It also involved allegations of money laundering and real estate transactions in Lebanon. The temporary seizure was the result of extensive investigative work and was considered a temporary success in the fight against clan crime in the capital.
This Wednesday the time has come. It was shortly after 10 a.m. when a large contingent of public order offices, bailiffs and the police arrived in front of the villa. Days before, the adjacent street had been declared a no-parking zone. Security precautions have been significantly increased than is usual for forced evictions. After all, it’s about clearing the property of one of the capital’s most famous clans.
There is a wrecked car in the front yard of the villa and pieces of furniture in the courtyard. Bulky waste lies around the house. In the last few days, the clan has been preparing for their move, packing boxes, cleaning the sidewalk in front of the house with the leaf blower and even digging up the garden.
But appearances are deceiving. Before they moved out, the clan caused pure devastation in the villa: the wooden floor was torn out, cables were hanging out of the wall, and windows were smashed. There is a lot of bulky waste, antiques, a silver Advent wreath, boxes with dishes and old children’s books in the garden. A student calendar sticks out of one with the inscription “Time to be happy.”
The Arab family is said to have evacuated the house by 3 a.m. A few hours later she is said to have left the property. The “BZ” had previously reported.
On Wednesday morning, the front door was open some time before the forced eviction and the windows on the first floor were wide open. Numerous media representatives are standing in front of the garden fence. But the mood is calm. A resident stands in front of the house and says that the Remmos were quite sociable as neighbors. He heard that Issa Remmo made sure that drug dealing in her district stopped a few years ago. Of course, there is no proof of this.
For years, members of the clan have been making national headlines with crimes, for example in October 2014 with the blowing up of a Berlin savings bank, in which 9.1 million euros were stolen. Or in March 2017 with the break-in at the Bodemuseum, when two clan members stole a gold coin weighing 100 kilograms. The clan recently made headlines around the world with the break-in into the Green Vault.
There have been repeated police operations at the clan villa in Neukölln in recent years. Most recently, on New Year’s Eve, a family member attacked a police officer in front of the house. The trigger was that a daughter of clan leader Issa Remmo was hit by a police car. The police officers were with flashing lights and sirens when the girl allegedly ran into the street.
“Gross disproportion” between the value of the property and the clan member’s income
Members of the Arab clan have been living in the property on the outskirts of Neukölln since 2012. One of Issa Remmo ‘s sons bought it at the age of 19 for around 240,000 euros. The villa is one of the 77 properties temporarily confiscated. This security was made possible by a reform of asset recovery in 2017, which simplified the confiscation of “proceeds of crime” – such as real estate or accounts.
In 2021, the Berlin district court found a “gross disproportion” between the value of the property and the young man’s – not significant – legal income. The villa therefore went into state hands, i.e. the property of the State of Berlin. However, the municipality is responsible, in this case the Neukölln district office.
Berlin crime gangs of Arab origin have long earned infamy with violence and brazen robberies but now, police warn, they have targeted a new generation of refugees for recruitment.
Known in the media as Berlin’s “clans,” whose founders themselves fled war in Lebanon in the 1980s, they have long controlled much of the city’s illegal drugs trade, street prostitution and protection rackets.
The dozen or so Arabic and Kurdish-origin extended families, with their patriarchal structures and codes of honor, have also been mythologized by rap artists and portrayed in the TV series 4 Blocks.
Now police warn that the clans have sought out new members from among the over 1 million asylum-seekers who have arrived in Germany since mid-2015, half of them from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
The clans “are trying to get others to do the dirty work” such as selling drugs or committing small burglaries, said Benjamin Jendro of the GDP police union. Many refugees, he said, are “men who have arrived alone in Germany” and who “have not yet had to do with the justice system,” making it less likely that they will go to prison if caught.
An undercover police investigator also told Die Welt newspaper that “above all, it is the young, physically strong men who are in the sights of the clans, who make them do the dirty work.”

Migration Control Obsession Ignores Abuses, Entrenches Oppression
Visiting Cairo on March 17, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, along with the Prime Ministers of Italy, Greece, and Belgium, will officially upgrade the EU-Egypt relations to a “comprehensive and strategic partnership”, paving the way for a package of EU aid, grants, loans and investments in the country estimated at between four and eight billion Euros.
Key in this partnership will be the EU’s support for Egypt’s border control. While details are under negotiation, the blueprint is the same as the flawed EU deals with Tunisia and Mauritania: stop migrants, ignore abuses.
Human Rights Watch has long criticized the EU’s cash-for-migration-control approach, crystalized under von der Leyen, which exposes the EU to complicity in abuses, contradicts the EU’s founding values, erodes its credibility as a principled global player, and emboldens the far right’s demagogic narrative across Europe. It strengthens authoritarian rulers while betraying human rights defenders, journalists, lawyers, and activists whose work involves great personal risk.
Egypt is the epitome of this
Since taking power in a 2013 coup, and becoming president of Egypt in 2014, Sisi’s governments have ruled Egypt with an iron fist. They have been responsible for massacring protesters and jailing and torturing thousands of perceived critics and opponents – often holding them in protracted pre-trial detention or sentencing them in grossly unfair trials. Independent media and civil society have been stifled and the judiciary is an obedient arm of government repression. The ruling military has expanded its powers over civilian life.
Now this abysmal repression is being rewarded with fresh support from the EU, including funds that will likely directly support the repression of migrants.
At the same time, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the United Arab Emirates have provided billions for Egypt’s depleted reserves. The IMF funds are linked to economic reforms supported by the EU, although some of the reforms are detrimental to the Egyptians’ economic rights, amid increasing poverty.
Without pushing for genuine human rights reforms or reining in Egyptian government abuses, the EU’s support is unlikely to stop the next economic or political crisis from erupting in Egypt. Ordinary Egyptians, businesspeople, migrants, and refugees will continue paying the price for this approach, while their oppressors thrive on impunity and renewed support.
