German public broadcaster ARD delivered a bizarre dance performance this year at a televised Good Friday service.
On Good Friday, viewers of the ARD service were amazed at the performance of an artist. “Have the Germans gone crazy?” ask users on X.
The Protestant Church also knows that you have to keep up with the times in order to keep the believers . Classic church services often cause fatigue and only the overly hard wooden benches protect those listening from sleep attacks.
So why not make the service a little more varied around the sermon of a clergyman? This was apparently also the idea with the TV channel to broadcast the service on Good Friday from the City Church/ Kirche in Wuppertal (NRW).
Dancer throws flour around in church
“The Good Friday service deals with Jesus’ last words: ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me!’ Pastor Simone Pries leads the liturgical service. “Martin Engels will give the sermon,” was the announcement. When it came to the artistic design, Wuppertal went a little overboard.
Dancer Tetiana Znamerokvska started the service with an expressive dance performance and then gave her all after a short sermon and singing. “Sometimes words are not enough,” the priest announced the performance as Zanerovska came down a flight of stairs barefoot before starting a wild, crazy dance that has probably never been seen in a German church. In the end, the artist ecstatically threw flour around herself before fleeing back up the stairs.
A video of the seemingly bizarre appearance is now making the rounds on X (formerly Twitter). “Lord help us,” one user commented on the video. Another even suspects that the whole of Germany has gone crazy. At least no one can complain that the Good Friday service was not entertaining. Perhaps Wuppertal-Elberfeld is an example of how the church could counteract its declining membership. With a little more courage for entertainment?
Wow! 😱
Actually, dancing is banned on Good Friday in Germany. It’s the forces of Martin Lutcifer who are causing trouble!
On Good Friday it is illegal to dance in public for the entire day in 12 out of Germany’s 16 federal states. The remaining four enforce partial bans, meaning that nowhere in the country are your dance moves going to be particularly welcomed. Penalties vary, but violators risk run-ins with the police and fines of up to 1.500 euros.
In Germany’s more traditionally religious states in the south, things are taken even more seriously. Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg enforce stricter bans that begin on Maundy Thursday and run right through to Easter Sunday.
In Baden-Württemberg, background music is allowed in public spaces but dancing is expressly not permitted. In Bavaria, it is forbidden to play any type of music in bars, with violators facing fines of up to 10.000 euros.
Even in more “relaxed” states like North-Rhine Westphalia, music and entertainment events are prohibited on Good Friday and in Germany’s party capital, Berlin, the dancing ban is in place from 4am until 9pm on Friday.
