The chairman of a Senate investigations subcommittee issued a subpoena Wednesday for documents on Saudi Arabia’s new golf partnership with the PGA Tour, saying the kingdom had to be more transparent about what he said was its $35 billion in investments in the United States.
A non-exhaustive list of Saudi Arabia’s human rights violations
Experts and rattled senators testifeid to several of PIF’s links with growing human rights abuses under bin Salman’s leadership. Some specific examples that came up:
➡ High-level Saudi officials weren’t held accountable for the murder of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, despite evidence of their involvement. Saudi Arabia’s PIF owns a company whose jets were used to transport the killers of Khashoggi from Saudi Arabia to Turkey, where the Washington Post journalist was murdered in 2018. According to the CIA, bin Salman approved the operation,.
➡ As defense minister between 2015 and 2022, bin Salman “carried out scores of indiscriminate and disproportionate airstrikes on civilians and civilian objects in Yemen, hitting homes, schools, hospitals, markets, and mosques,” Shea said
➡ Saudi government documents submitted to a Canadian court as part of an ongoing legal claim revealed that, in 2017, one of bin Salman’s advisers ordered Yasir al-Rumayyan, the supervisor of PIF, to transfer 20 companies captured as part of an “anti-corruption campaign” directly into the fund’s ownership. “There is a risk that these companies were ‘transferred’ from their owners without due process,” Shea said.
➡ In August, Saudi border guards were accused of the mass killing of Ethiopian migrants and asylum seekers.
➡ The Republican senator Ron Johnson, who has repeatedly called upon the Department of Justice and the FBI to share “complete, unredacted records of Saudi Arabia’s role,” centered his testimony on the kingdom’s association with the 9/11 attacks.

The United States and other Western allies have all but rubber-stamped Saudi Arabia’s repression at home and abroad. Repeated U.S. failures to hold Saudi Arabia to account for a litany of human rights violations has emboldened the Saudi government, allowing it to act with unbridled impunity as abuses grow ever more horrifying.
In late August, Human Rights Watch reported in gruesome detail how Saudi forces are killing hundreds of migrants, including women and children, on the remote, mountainous border with Yemen. Researchers documented Saudi border guards using explosive weapons against Ethiopian migrants and asylum-seekers attempting to cross into Saudi Arabia. The attacks are widespread and systematic.
Details in the evidence collected by Human Rights Watch are utterly devastating: “From 150, only seven people survived that day,” a survivor said. “There were remains of people everywhere, scattered everywhere.” A 17-year-old boy said border guards forced him and other survivors to rape two girls after the guards had executed another migrant who refused to rape another girl.
The violations detailed in this report are a dramatic escalation in both the number and manner of targeted killings. Arbitrary detention, torture, and ill-treatment by Saudi forces were commonplace along this route, but never before have we seen the systematic killing of unarmed migrants, including women and children, on this scale.
The Saudi government has never faced meaningful consequences for prior abuses committed in plain sight and thoroughly documented. Indeed, U.S. authorities had been briefed on the killings of migrants at the Yemeni-Saudi border for more than a year.
At only 38, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is just a few short years into what may be a decadeslong reign and yet has already overseen one of the worst periods for human rights in the country’s modern history. Each year, Saudi Arabia’s abuses under his rule metastasize further as the U.S. government fails, again and again, to follow through on threats to hold him to account, all the while courting the kingdom to further Washington’s economic and security interests.
Human Rights Watch has not yet documented direct involvement of the crown prince or any other individual Saudi official in the killings of migrants on the border. But if proved to be part of an explicit state policy of murder, this would be a crime against humanity.
This absence of accountability for previous violations—such as the brutal murder and dismemberment of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi officials in their consulate in Istanbul in 2018; apparent war crimes committed during the disastrous war in Yemen, such as an October 2016 attack on a funeral ceremony that killed at least 100 people and wounded more than 500, including children; and mounting domestic repression—has emboldened the crown prince.
Despite pledging to make Saudi Arabia into a “pariah,” U.S. President Joe Biden failed to seek accountability for the crown prince’s role in the Khashoggi murder. The legal position (as set out by the U.S. State Department) that the crown prince cannot be sued while serving as the head of government, a role he has formally occupied since his appointment as prime minister in September 2022, further highlighted this failure to seek accountability despite a U.S. intelligence assessment, released in February 2021, that he approved Khashoggi’s murder.
In Yemen as well, Saudi leaders have wriggled their way out of accountability. As part of his role as Saudi defense minister between 2015-2022, the crown prince oversaw unlawful attacks, including apparent war crimes that have killed scores of civilians. The Saudi- and United Arab Emirates-led coalition has repeatedly bombed Yemeni civilians, and then skirted the international community’s efforts to hold them accountable.
Saudi Arabia, backed by the UAE, successfully led an aggressive lobbying campaign to end the mandate for the United Nations Group of Eminent Experts on Yemen, an international, impartial, and independent body established by the U.N. Human Rights Council in 2017 that reported on rights violations and abuses in Yemen.

In 2020 President Bill Clinton’s favorite freedom fighter got indicted for mass murder, torture, kidnapping, and other crimes against humanity. In 1999, the Clinton administration launched a 78-day bombing campaign that killed up to 1500 civilians in Serbia and Kosovo in what the American media proudly portrayed as a crusade against ethnic bias. That war, like most of the pretenses of U.S. foreign policy, was always a sham.
Kosovo president Hashim Thaci was charged with ten counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity by an international tribunal in The Hague in the Netherlands charged Thaci and nine other men with a “war crimes, including murder, enforced disappearance of persons, persecution, and torture.
After the bombing ended, Clinton assured the Serbian people that the United States and NATO agreed to be peacekeepers only “with the understanding that they would protect Serbs as well as ethnic Albanians and that they would leave when peace took hold.” In the subsequent months and years, American and NATO forces stood by as the KLA resumed its ethnic cleansing, slaughtering Serb civilians, bombing Serbian churches and oppressing any non-Muslims. Almost a quarter-million Serbs, Gypsies, Jews, and other minorities fled Kosovo after Mr. Clinton promised to protect them. By 2003, almost 70 percent of the Serbs living in Kosovo in 1999 had fled, and Kosovo was 95 percent ethnic Albanian.
But Thaci remained useful for U.S. policymakers. Even though he was widely condemned for oppression and corruption after taking power in Kosovo, Vice President Joe Biden hailed Thaci in 2010 as the “George Washington of Kosovo.” A few months later, a Council of Europe report accused Thaci and KLA operatives of human organ trafficking. The Guardian noted that the report alleged that Thaci’s inner circle “took captives across the border into Albania after the war, where a number of Serbs are said to have been murdered for their kidneys, which were sold on the black market.” The report stated that when “transplant surgeons” were “ready to operate, the [Serbian] captives were brought out of the ‘safe house’ individually, summarily executed by a KLA gunman, and their corpses transported swiftly to the operating clinic.”
Despite the body trafficking charge, Thaci was a star attendee at the annual Global Initiative conference by the Clinton Foundation in 2011, 2012, and 2013, where he posed for photos with Bill Clinton. Maybe that was a perk from the $50,000 a month lobbying contract that Thaci’s regime signed with The Podesta Group, co-managed by future Hillary Clinton campaign manager John Podesta, as the Daily Caller reported.

Clinton remains a hero in Kosovo where a statue of him was erected in the capital, Pristina. The Guardian newspaper noted that the statue showed Clinton “with a left hand raised, a typical gesture of a leader greeting the masses. In his right hand he is holding documents engraved with the date when NATO started the bombardment of Serbia, 24 March 1999.” It would have been a more accurate representation to depict Clinton standing on a pile of corpses of the women, children, and others killed in the U.S. bombing campaign.
In 2019, Bill Clinton and his fanatically pro-bombing former Secretary of State, Madeline Albright, visited Pristina, where they were “treated like rock stars” as they posed for photos with Thaci. Clinton declared, “I love this country and it will always be one of the greatest honors of my life to have stood with you against ethnic cleansing (by Serbian forces) and for freedom.” Thaci awarded Clinton and Albright medals of freedom “for the liberty he brought to us and the peace to entire region.” Albright has reinvented herself as a visionary warning against fascism in the Trump era. Actually, the only honorific that Albright deserves is “Butcher of Belgrade.”
There is a saying in Serbia that basically goes:
“In war, the state will give the cannons, the rich people will give the oxes, and poor people will give their sons. When war is over, the state takes it’s cannons back, the rich people gets their oxes, and poor people are searching for graves.“
After the war, the leading NATO general who lied about the train incident had big business deals in Kosovo following the war. Other American politicians who were prominent lobbyists for Kosovo’s independence and pro-war against Serbia were also awarded lucrative business contracts by the newly established Kosovo government. War is all about business for American generals and corrupted American politicians.
In 1999 when Bill Clinton blasted Orthodox Serbia on Orthodox Easter Sunday, NATO forces have written “Happy Easter” on some of the bombs dropped over Yugoslavia.
Anglo-Americans bombed Orthodox Serbia in WWII and NATO in 1999.

Dear Mr. President,
I am for a third time writing to you as a Christian, as an Orthodox Christian Hierarch, and as a native-born Greek-American.
I will not repeat all the things I expressed to you very recently in two previous letters. You are well aware of the horror being perpetrated by NATO forces in the sovereign state of Yugoslavia. I do not need to tell you how many men, woman, and children, Christian and Muslim, “smart bombs” have killed in the past seven days. I can only ask you, in the name of God, to use all your power and all your authority to stop all NATO strikes against all the peoples of Yugoslavia immediately.
Mr. President, I must inform you that this Sunday is Palm Sunday for more than 300 million Eastern Orthodox Christians. Palm Sunday is when we Orthodox Christians glorify the day when Jesus Christ will enter Jerusalem. It is the day that begins His Passion and Suffering that leads up to His Crucifixion and Resurrection. We Eastern Orthodox Christians know the week that follows Palm Sunday as Great and Holy Week. During Great and Holy Week we will participate in the Glorious Passion and Suffering of Jesus Christ. On Pascha, the Sunday following Palm Sunday, we will participate in His Glorious Three-Day Resurrection.
Mr. Clinton, there is no holier time for Eastern Orthodox Christians than Great and Holy Week. It is a time when we emerse ourselves, experience for ourselves, and glorify through prayer, fasting, and hymns the Great Miracle that is the Suffering, Death, Burial, and Resurrection of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ. It is a most solemn and sacred time that the Eastern Orthodox Church Calendar revolves around and prepares for all year. It is in reality the meaning and essence of our short sojourn on this planet.
Mr. President, I am sure that you know that the Serbs of Serbia, Montenegro, Vojvodina, Kosovo and Metohija are Orthodox Christians. They have been Orthodox Christians for a thousand years. Millions of Serbians have died throughout history rather than give up their Faith. Many times in the past they have defended all of Christendom in the face of death. I implore you, Mr. President, do not make us party to the death of any more Serbians during this Holiest of times.
I must tell you, Mr. Clinton, I was deeply saddened when I heard reports that NATO forces have written “Happy Easter” on some of the bombs dropped over Yugoslavia.* I hope these reports are untrue. If our intention is to insult the entire Serbian, people and nation it was enough that the day German airplanes in the NATO airstrikes dropped bombs on Serbia last week was the anniversary of a great day in Serbian history. No German planes had seen combat since World War Two until this recent NATO strike. In March of 1941 the Serbs were pounded by the German Luftwaffe (airforce) because they made the decision to fight against Hitler and join the Allies. On the 58th anniversary of that great day the Luftwaffe again has dropped bombs on the Serbs. I am sure you see the significance of that, Mr. Clinton, just as I am sure you see the significance in fighting a war gauged to humiliate and insult an entire civilization.
Recently during decisions made while planning for a military strike against Iraq the decision, as announced by you to the American people, was made to cease any military strikes during the period of Ramadan. Ramadan is a holy time for all Muslims and as Iraq is populated by millions of Muslims you did the proper thing, the good thing, in making that decision. I am imploring you to do the right thing, the good thing, and call off NATO strikes against the people of Serbia, Montenegro, Vojvodina, Kosovo, and Metohija, during Orthodox Christian Great and Holy Week. Not to do so would be extremely painful to not only Serbian Orthodox Christians but to Albanian, Greek, Russian, Ukrainian, Beylorussian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Arab, African, and Asian Orthodox Christians as well. I know from personal experience, having Albanians in my Cathedral here in New York, that the Albanian Orthodox Christians are suffering as much as anyone in Yugoslavia is.
The Nineteenth century French philosopher, Alexis de Tocqueville, was a keen observer of the American Nation. It was he who saw the greatness that was (and still is) America when he said, “America is great because she is good. When she ceases to be good she will cease to be great.”
Do what is good, Mr. President, and keep America, keep us, a great nation.
I pray that the Glorious Resurrection of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ may enter your heart.
