☪ France’s interior minister says plan to attack Olympic football events foiled
French authorities on Friday raised preliminary terrorism charges against an 18-year-old accused of a plot targeting spectators attending soccer games at the upcoming Paris Olympics. The interior minister said it was the first such thwarted plot targeting the Games, which start in eight weeks as France is on its highest threat alert level.
The man is accused of planning a “violent action” on behalf of the Islamic State group’s jihadist ideology, the national counterterrorism prosecutor’s office said in a statement Friday. The man, who was not identified, is behind held in custody pending further investigation.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said in a statement that members of the General Directorate of Internal Security arrested an 18-year-old man from Chechnya on May 22 on suspicion of being behind a plan to attack soccer events that will be held in the southern city of Saint-Etienne.
According to the initial investigation, the man was preparing an attack targeting the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium in Saint-Etienne that will host several soccer matches during the Summer Games. The planned attack was to target spectators and police forces, the statement said. The suspect wanted to attack the Olympic events “to die and become a martyr,” the statement also said.
France is on in its highest security alert ahead of the Paris Olympics and Paralympics, which are expected to draw millions of visitors, and run July 26-Aug. 11. Soccer matches will take place in cities across France before the final in Paris´ Stade de France.
Darmanin, the interior minister, did not cite a specific security threat against the soccer event, but has said there are multiple potential threats, including those from Islamic extremist groups, violent environmental activists, far-right groups and cyberattacks from Russia or other adversaries.
The Paris Olympics organizing committee said it was made aware of the arrest and praised intelligence and security services. “Security is the highest priority of Paris 2024. We are working daily in close coordination with the Interior Ministry and all stakeholders – and will continue to be fully mobilized,” it said in a statement.
In April, French President Emmanuel Macron said the July 26 opening ceremony could be moved instead to the country’s national stadium if the security threat is deemed too high.
👹 French police shot dead a knife-wielding Algerian man who set fire to a synagogue and threatened police in the city of Rouen on Friday in the latest antisemitic attack, officials said.
“An armed man somehow climbed up the synagogue and threw an object, a sort of Molotov cocktail, into the main praying room,” said mayor Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, adding that nobody else was harmed in the shocked city in the northwestern Normandy region.
Police found the man on the synagogue roof with an iron bar and kitchen knife, shooting him when he defied orders to stop.
France, like many countries across Europe, has seen a huge spike in anti-Jewish acts since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel and Israel’s military response in Gaza.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said the attacker’s bid for a residency permit had been recently rejected. He was otherwise not on the radar of police or intelligence services.
“This antisemitic act affects us all deeply,” Darmanin said after visiting the synagogue, adding that France was doing all it could to protect its Jewish community.
The synagogue’s rabbi Chmouel Lubecki said his wife was there at the time of the attack.
“We had a great fright,” he told BFM TV.
His wife “heard gunshots and screams … and then she saw smoke coming from the synagogue, so she immediately went down, she helped the firefighters get in the synagogue.”
Such an attack was expected, he said, due to the rise in antisemitism. “We had this fear inside of us, but when it actually happens, it’s still shocking.”

👹 An asylum seeker has been jailed for life over the first terror attack on British soil linked to the Israel-Hamas conflict after murdering a pensioner, 70, at random and attempting to kill his Christian convert housemate.
In the days following the October 7 attack by Hamas, Morocco-born Ahmed Alid, 45, became increasingly agitated, ‘laughing and praising God’ as the news of each atrocity was reported.
Eight days after Hamas attacked Israel, he launched a ferocious knife attack on Javed Nouri, a housemate in a four bed asylum hostel, who he hated because he had converted to Christianity.
After Mr Nouri fought off his attacker, Alid grabbed a kitchen knife with a 20 inch blade and ran into the streets in the early hours of the morning where he encountered Terrence Carney, 70, and, shouting Alluha Akbar, stabbed him six times causing fatal injuries.
Self-radicalised Alid told police his attack was ‘for the people of Gaza’ and he had wanted to kill more victims. It is the first example of a terrorist attack in Britain inspired by the Hamas atrocities on Israel.
At the sentencing today the judge, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb, ruled that Alid had committed terrorist offences in his vicious attacks and had shown ‘no genuine remorse or pity’ for his victims.’

👮 Police have launched a hunt for a racist yob who targeted Jewish people in London‘s Stamford Hill in a string of anti-Semitic attacks.
The unknown male was caught on CCTV throwing the hats off of Jewish men close to a synagogue in Hackney, with reports of the same man assaulting a child and punching other victims in the head.
Metropolitan Police officers were made aware of the horrific incident and raced to the scene on Cazenove Road shortly after 2pm on Thursday December 21, although the suspect had fled before they arrived.
The onslaught of Jew hatred in London continues apace with multiple reports over the past 48 hours of assaults and graffiti across the city.
In the Stamford Hill neighborhood, a bus stop outside a Jewish girls school was targeted on Wednesday with antisemitic graffiti in which a Star of David was defaced with a large “X.”
London has experienced a record number of such incidents this year, exacerbated by a massive uptick following Hamas’ Oct. 7 massacre across southern Israel.
According to an Algemeiner review of Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) data, antisemitic offenses in London increased 162 percent in 2023 through November, with 1,442 incidents eclipsing the full-year totals of 550 in 2022 and 845 in 2021. The MPS began issuing public data on the city’s anti-Jewish offenses in 2018.
Orthodox Jews in the Stamford Hill section of the city have been targeted disproportionately for being visibly Jewish, as shown in a spate of incidents reported by Shomrim, a Jewish organization that monitors antisemitism and also serves as a neighborhood watch group.
This month alone, an Orthodox Jewish man was assaulted by a man riding a bicycle on the sidewalk, two attackers brutally mauled a Jewish woman, and a group of Jewish children was berated by a woman who screamed “I’ll kill all of you Jews. You are murderers!” A similar incident occurred when a man confronted a Jewish shopper and shouted, “You f—king Jew, I will kill you!”
✞ German tourist stabbed to death in Paris ‘terror’ attack. Two other people were injured in the incident, which happened near the Eiffel Tower.
A person known to French authorities as a radical Islamist with mental health troubles stabbed a German tourist to death and wounded two people in central Paris on Saturday, December 2, before being arrested, officials said.
The attack took place close to the Eiffel Tower during a busy weekend night and came with the country on its highest alert for attacks as tensions rise against the background of the war between Israel and Hamas.
“We will not give in to terrorism,” Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne wrote on X, formerly Twitter, after the attack.
President Emmanuel Macron said he was sending his condolences to the family of a German killed in the “terrorist attack.”
French anti-terror prosecutors said that they would now take on the investigation. The attacker was known to authorities as a radical Islamist and was being treated for mental illness, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said at the scene by the River Seine, adding that the man had shouted “Allahu Akbar” (“God is greatest”) before being arrested.
He fatally stabbed the German tourist, born in 1999, with a knife and then used a hammer to attack others as he sought to escape on the other side of the River Seine.
The area by Bir Hakeim bridge, usually thronging with tourists and locals, was cordoned off by police and bright with the flashing lights of security forces and emergency services.
