On the stillest of Berlin mornings, a tsunami of a performance. It came from Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa, who over 26.2 astonishing miles redefined what many thought was possible in the women’s marathon, as she blew the world record to smithereens in a time of 2hr 11min 53sec.
The fact the 29-year-old Ethiopian shattered the previous best, set by Brigid Kosgei in 2019, by 2min 11sec was remarkable enough. Yet the way she powered home through the Brandenburg Gate suggested she could go even quicker still.
🏃 Somali ‘Sprinter’’s ‘ Embarrassing’ 22 Second 100m Draws Government Apology
A Somalian ‘sprinter’ competing at the World University Games in Chengdu, China, has gone viral after running the women’s 100 metres in embarrassingly slow fashion.
Nasra Ali Abukar ran the distance in 21.81 seconds, some 10 seconds behind the leaders and was seen to skip across the finish line having been left well behind by fellow competitors.
It was claimed the time was the ‘slowest-ever’ in international competition.
A clip of the race was posted online and sparked questions as to why Somalia would send an athlete who was so underprepared to a major event.
It was claimed Abukar is actually the niece of Somali Athletics vice-president Khadija Adan Dahir and her selection for the competition in China was purely down to nepotism.
Somalia’s sports minister publicly apologised on Wednesday and ordered that the chairwoman of the national track and field federation be suspended after a seemingly untrained female sprinter represented the African country at the World University Games in China and took more than 20 seconds to finish a 100m race.
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mohamed Barre Mohamud, said his ministry did not know how 20-year-old Nasra Abukar Ali was selected to compete at the event in Chengdu.
The ministry separately released a statement directing the Somalia Olympic Committee to suspend the national athletics federation chairwoman, Khadija Aden Dahir, amid allegations that Nasra Abukar was a relative of hers and was given the chance to compete at the games because of that.
Somalia’s university union said it had not sent any runners to China as part of an official Somali team.

🔥 Scorching temperatures have again swept across parts of Europe, with many locations in Italy among those setting June or all-time records for heat.
Temperatures surpassed 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 Celsius) across much of Italy this week. On Tuesday, downtown Rome hit its warmest temperature on record at 105 degrees Fahrenheit (40.8 Celsius), while several other cities set monthly records. Record-warm temperatures persisted overnight across a large chunk of Eastern Europe. The heat comes during one of the country’s worst droughts in decades and as authorities are rationing water.
The record temperatures are spawned from desert air traveling from the African continent, which has brought excessive heat from Algeria to the Arctic Circle. Slovenia and Croatia both claimed new national heat records. Several other countries, including Finland and Iran, also have experienced new monthly temperature highs.
