Italy’s colonial history speaks volumes not only about the Fascist regime but also about postwar Italy and how the ‘continuity of the state’ influenced the historical development of Italian democracy.

On May 5, 1936, after seven months of war, Marshal Pietro Badoglio telegraphed the news to Rome about the entry of the Italian Army’s troops into Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.

On May 9, Mussolini, from the balcony of Piazza Venezia, triumphantly announced “the resurgence of the Empire on the destined hills of Rome.” All this history is now following Giorgia Meloni like a long shadow in her trip to the former Italian colony, the first post-fascist Prime Minister and political daughter of the MSI, the heir party to Mussolini’s movement.

In reality, the fact that there was never a reckoning with that part of history is not exclusive to the far right and calls into question Italian society as a whole. Even nowadays, streets, squares and monuments all over the country are named after and dedicated to the imperialist war waged by Fascism, and no government or institution has thought to intervene to at least give an explanation of what Via dell’Amba Aradam, Via Addis Ababa or Largo Ascianghi mean in their historical context.

Italy’s colonial past has been an enormous repressed baggage for our Republic, which made the change from Fascism to democracy without its own symbolic Nuremberg trial, and instead formed its self-image with the false myth of “Italians are good people.” This was shown by the incredible extent of the ostracism by the press and mass media against the greatest (and former partisan) historian of Italian colonialism, Angelo Del Boca. His polemic with Indro Montanelli on the use of mustard bombs and asphyxiant gases by the Italian Army was particularly memorable (which the latter kept denying, implausibly, invoking solely his “personal memory” from his time among the occupation troops), a force whose aviation dropped 200 tons of explosives in the Battle of Scirè in February-March 1936 alone.

These war crimes were confirmed by documents and were not merely isolated incidents. After the occupation of Addis Ababa, massacres of civilians and partisans continued on a regular basis, so much so that the military office of the Ministry of Italian Africa recorded, as of June 10, 1940, 76,906 Ethiopian rebels killed, 4,437 wounded and 2,847 prisoners.

That history speaks volumes not only about the Fascist regime but also about postwar Italy and how the “continuity of the state,” as Claudio Pavone has taught us, influenced the historical development of democracy in our country.

In Ethiopia, police operations were coordinated by Rodolfo Graziani, a Fascist high official appointed viceroy of Ethiopia, war criminal and minister of the Armed Forces of the collaborationist Salò army. After the war, he was tried but quickly released from prison, becoming honorary president of the MSI in 1952. His pacifying “embrace” with Giulio Andreotti in Arcinazzo during one of the Christian Democrat politician’s election rallies would become infamous. In 2012, a mausoleum was inaugurated in his honor in the town of Affile, financed by the regional government of Lazio, then led by Renata Polverini and including the then-Councilman for Transport Francesco Lollobrigida, now a loyal underling in the Meloni government.

After an attack against Graziani by the Ethiopian Resistance on February 19, 1937, the Italian military command ordered a mass extermination (14,294 rebels killed and executed and 50,000 houses burned) culminating in the massacre of the Coptic monks of Debrà Libanòs and carried out by units led by Pietro Maletti. Decades later, the latter’s son, Gianadelio Maletti, who followed in his father’s footsteps in his military career, was convicted of aiding and abetting as part of the investigation into the December 12, 1969 Piazza Fontana massacre.

Giorgia Meloni could learn in Ethiopia the story of another of the founding fathers of her MSI: Alessandro Lessona, placed by Mussolini at the head of the Ministry for Italian East Africa. In the postwar period, having gone through the purge unscathed, he would be a member and then senator of the MSI in 1963. In April 1969, he resigned from the party and joined the National Front of Junio Valerio Borghese (another honorary president of the MSI) shortly before the coup attempt of December 7-8, 1970.

Thus, while she’s touting a chimerical “Mattei Plan” for Africa, Meloni might take the opportunity to think back to those founding fathers and “those people who are no more” to whom she dedicated her electoral victory in September. Instead, she will continue to ignore the issue (and so will national public opinion), banking on the country’s disinterest in knowledge of its past and relying on the sad spirit of our times, which recalls Karl Kraus’ famous aphorism: “When the sun of culture is low, even dwarves will cast long shadows.”

The First Italo-Ethiopian War[a] was fought between Italy and Ethiopia from 1895 to 1896. It originated from the disputed Treaty of Wuchale, which the Italians claimed turned Ethiopia into an Italian protectorate. Full-scale war broke out in 1895, with Italian troops from Italian occupied Eritrea achieving initial successes at Coatit, Senafe and Debra Ailà, until they were reinforced by a large Christian Ethiopian army led by General Ras Alula Abanega.

The Battle of Adwa (29 February-1 March 1896) is of huge significance for Africa in that the decimation of the continent could not be completed. Ethiopia turned out to be the last man standing.

After this Italian defeat the Roman Italians, French and Germans begun infiltrating the Ethiopian state. They initially killed the great Christian Emperor Yohannes IV, his son Ras Mengesha and General Ras Alula – and gradually put the Oromo warlord Menelik ll and his Oromo /Oromara associates into power, who treasonously gave them the historical Ethiopian territories like Eritrea and Djibouti. Just like today, with the help of the Oromo Menelik II, the Romans were able to massacre and starve to death over a million Northern Ethiopian Orthdoox Christians who were the main forces behind the Italian humiliation.

The great famine is estimated to have caused 3.5 million deaths. During Emperor Menelik’s Reign, Tigraywas split into two regions, one of which he sold to the Italians who later named it Eritrea. Only two months after the death of Emperor Yohaness lV, Menelik signed the Wuchale treaty of 2 May 1889 conceding Eritrea to the Italians. It was not only Eritrea that Menelik gave away, he also had a hand in letting Djibouti be part of the French protectorate when he agreed the border demarcation with the French in 1887. Some huge parts of Tigray were put under Gonder. The Southern part, places like present day Alamata, Kobo etc were put under Wello Amhara administration.

The First Italo-Ethiopian War[a] was fought between Italy and Ethiopia from 1895 to 1896. The Battle of Adwa (29 February-1 March 1896) is of huge significance for Africa in that the decimation of the continent could not be completed. Ethiopia turned out to be the last man standing.

🔥 Turkey hit by new 6.4-magnitude earthquake

Tremor shakes southern province of Hatay, which was worst-affected region in quake two weeks ago.

A powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake has hit Turkey’s southern province of Hatay, terrifying those left in a region devastated by powerful twin earthquakes two weeks earlier.

The quake, less powerful than the initial 7.8 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes which tore a path of destruction through southern Turkey and northern Syria on 6 February, albeit threatened yet more devastation in a region that had seen many people flee their destroyed homes for the safety of other towns and villages outside of the earthquake zone.

It struck at a depth of just two km (1.2 miles), the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said, potentially magnifying its impact at ground level. It was centred near the southern Turkish city of Antakya and was felt in Syria, Egypt and Lebanon.

“It was the first day we’d decided to stay in our house as it’s just one floor, and I was using our heater to try and stay warm, demonstrating what to do in case another earthquake happened,” said Ata Koşar in the Hatay town of Ekinci, who lost his brother, his sister-in-law and his nephew when their nearby luxury apartment block collapsed during the first earthquake.

“I was laying on the floor, and as I was laying there another earthquake happened. We heard what sounded like more buildings collapsing again, and more damage to our house,” he said mournfully.

Witnesses said rescue teams were checking people were unharmed.

Muna al-Omar, a resident of Antakya, said she was in a tent in a park when the earthquake hit. “I thought the earth was going to split open under my feet,” she said, crying as she held her seven-year-old son in her arms.

“Is there going to be another aftershock?” she asked.

The death toll from the quakes two weeks ago rose to 41,156 in Turkey, the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority AFAD said on Monday, and it was expected to climb further, with 385,000 apartments known to have been destroyed or seriously damaged and many people still missing.

The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, said construction work on nearly 200,000 apartments in 11 earthquake-hit provinces of Turkey would begin next month.

Hours earlier, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said on a visit to Turkey that Washington would help “for as long as it takes” as rescue operations and aftershocks were winding down, and focus turned to towards urgent shelter and reconstruction work.

Among the survivors of the earthquakes are about 356,000 pregnant women who urgently need access to health services, the UN sexual and reproductive health agency (UNFPA) has said.

They include 226,000 women in Turkey and 130,000 in Syria, about 38,800 of whom will deliver in the next month. Many of them were sheltering in camps or exposed to freezing temperatures and struggling to get food or clean water.

In Syria, already shattered by more than a decade of civil war, most deaths have been in the northwest, where the United Nations said 4,525 people were killed. The area is controlled by insurgents at war with forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, complicating aid efforts.

Syrian officials say 1,414 people were killed in areas under the control of Assad’s government.

ስለ ሕዝቤና ወገኔ የደም ማዕበልና የእንባ ጎርፍ ሳስብና ስመለከት ምን እንደምል ግራ ገብቶኝ በዝምታ ተውጬ ትንሽ ቆየሁ። ከልቤ የመረረ ኃዘን የተናሣ ፊቴ ጠቁሯል፤ውስጤም እየደማ ነው።ወደ ውስጥ የፈሰሰው ደም በውጭ ከሚፈሰው በላይ ጉዳት አለው። ይህ የልብ መድማት የእኔ ብቻ አይደለም።የአብዛኛው ኢትዮጵያዊም እንጂ።በአደባባይ ደማቸው ፈስሶ ከሚታዩትና ከሞቱት በላይ በቤታቸው ውስጥና በልባቸው ጫካ ውስጥ አጥንታቸው ችቦ፣ደማቸው ነዳጅ ጋዝ ሆኖ በሚንቀለቀል እሳት ውስጥ በዝምታ የሚሞቱት ይበልጣሉ። ስለዚህ በውስጤ የሚፈሰውን ደም ዛሬ በትንሹ ወደውጭ ለማስተንፈስ ወደድሁ።በተለይ ስለ ሃይማኖት መሪዎችና አባቶች ሳስብ በጣም ልብ የሚሰብር ነው ። ቅዱስ አባታችን አቡነ ማቲያስ ከእንኳን አደረሳችሁ መልክታቸው ቀጥለው የተናገሩት አባታዊ ምክር እና ምኞታቸው ከአንዲት ትልቅና ርዕት ሐይማኖት መሪ አባት አይደለም ከአንድ የኔ ቢጤ ምእመን የማይጠበቅ ንግግር ነው የተናገሩት ። አባታዊ ምክራቸውም ይህንን ይመስል ነበር ” ወጣቶች ልማት አታደናቅፉ አርፋችሁ ተቀመጡ ካለዛ ግን ዋጋችሁን ታገኛላችሁ “! ይህን ምክር ነበር ። በእውነቱ ቅዱስ አባታችን በጎቼን አሰማራ ፣ ጠቦቶቼን ጠብቅ ፣ግልገሎቼን ጠብቅ የሚለው አምላካዊ የአደራ ቃል ወዴት አስቀመጡት! ቅዱስ አባታችን በአሁኑ ስዓት ጸሎትና ጾም እና ምህላ በማድረግ ፈንታን ይህንን ልብ የሚሰብር አባታዊ ምክርዎትን ባሰብኩ ጊዜ በጣም አዘንኩ ። በሕዝብ የደምና የእንባ ባሕር ላይ የሚዋኙትን ግፈኞችና አረመኔዎች መገሰጽና ማውገዙ ቢቀር ቢያንስ በተኩላ መንጋ ውስጥ ያሰማሯቸውን በጎች ወደ እውነተኛው እረኛና ነፍሱን ስለበጎቹ ወዳኖረው፣ ወደሰጠው ብቸኛው ጌታ እንዲጮሁ ክርስቶስን ወክለው በበላይነት በሚመሯትና በሚያስተዳድሯት በቤተ ክርስቲያኗ ስም ጥሪ ቢያቀርቡ ምን አለበት?

The Book of Jonah has a message of Salvation.

2) God uses Jonah to save the mariners on the boat. These men were also Gentiles, but we can see that they were men seeking the Lord:

a. They prayed to their gods before taking any actions (1:5)

b. They asked Jonah to pray to his God so that they may not perish (1:6)

c. They believed Jonah when he said “I am a servant of the Lord, and I worship the Lord God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land” (1:9-10)

d. They desired to save Jonah’s life by rowing harder, even after he told them to throw him in the sea (1:13)

e. They prayed for forgiveness from the true God (1:14)

f. They feared the Lord and offered Him sacrifices (1:16)

That whale acted with great discipline according to an assuring predestined Divine plan. It appeared in the proper time and at the right place in order to carry Jonah in its belly. It was as though this prophet was being taken from an open ship liable to being covered and drowned by the waves, into an enclosed and protected ship invulnerable to water and waves. Jonah’s thinking, however, was of a more serious type. He was still thinking of his dignity and of his word, which was not carried out. It was the same thinking of old which had formerly induced him to flee from the presence of the Lord. Due to that thinking he deprived himself of the fellowship of heaven’s exultation. He separated himself from joining the hosts of angels in their joy over Nineveh’s salvation. May the prayers of the Prophet Jonah and the blessings of this holy fast bring to our hearts, minds, and spirits the true love, mercy, long suffering nature, and compassion of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Let us do like the Ninevites, and use these three days to offer repentance from our hearts, seeking the forgiveness of our sins. Let us do like Jonah, and give thanks to the Lord who prepares our way for us through all tribulations and trials, as He prepared the belly of the whale for Jonah. Let us put ourselves before our Lord, as humble obedient and faithful servants of the One True God, seeking to hear the message that He desires to give to the world through us.

Britain’s Royal Navy helped to execute the “terrorist attack” which damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines from Russia to the European Union, the Russian defence ministry has alleged.

The Russian ministry levelled the allegation at Britain’s senior military service in a news bulletin centred primarily on what they claimed was an attempted “terrorist attack against the ships of the Black Sea Fleet and civilian ships” on Saturday morning by Ukrainian drones in the vicinity of Sevastopol, Crimea, which was annexed by Moscow in 2014.

“The preparation of this terrorist act and the training of military personnel of 73rd Marine Special Operations Centre were carried out under supervision of British specialists in the city of Ochakov, Nikolayev region in Ukraine,” the Russian statement, posted on Telegram, asserted, without providing supporting evidence.

“According to available information, representatives of this unit of the British Navy took part in the planning, provision and implementation of a terrorist attack in the Baltic Sea on September 26 this year — blowing up the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines,” they added — again, without providing supporting evidence.

Of the attempted “terrorist attack” against the Black Sea Fleet, the Russians claimed that their vessels — which they said were “involved in ensuring the security of the ‘grain corridor’ as part of an international initiative to export agricultural products from Ukrainian ports” — were targeted by “nine unmanned aerial vehicles and seven autonomous maritime drones.”

They claimed all of the aerial drones and most of the maritime drones were “annihilated by shipborne weapons and maritime aviation” but that one minesweeper and a floating net boom sustained “minor” damage.

Russian forces have themselves been accused of targeting Ukrainian infrastructure — particularly energy infrastructure — with Iranian drones in recent weeks, causing substantial degradation of the invaded country’s grid as the winter months approach.

As the Russians have accused the British navy of planning and directing Ukrainian drone attacks, so have the Ukrainians accused Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of supporting and directing Russian drone attacks.
