💭 Storms and tornadoes caused extensive damage to several communities across the U.S. Southeast on Thursday, including in Alabama, where at least 25 tornadoes were reported, according to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center.

At least six fatalities have been confirmed in Autauga County, Alabama, located in the central part of the state, Emergency Management Director Ernie Baggett told Weather.com. “The best we can tell is about 40 homes have major damage or have been completely destroyed,” Baggett added.

The county’s coroner, Buster Barber, told CNN that emergency workers are still searching for bodies.

In Selma, officials called the city a “disaster area” as a high-end EF2 or EF3 tornado rolled through and lifted debris at least 16,000 feet up into the air, WSFA 12 reported. The storm was also reported to have caused major damage to roads and vehicles in the city.

Selma officials have enforced a curfew extending from dusk to dawn Thursday night.

No fatalities have been reported in Selma, but multiple people have been injured. The tornado also hit the Dallas County Jail, and inmates are currently being transferred to other counties’ facilities in the state, according to WSFA 12.

Lisa Marie Presley thanked enthusiastic supporters for traveling from around the world to visit the King of Rock ‘n Roll’s personal home.

Days before Lisa Marie Presley passed away Thursday, Jan. 12, she attended an event at Graceland in Memphis to honor her father, Elvis Presley, for what would have been his 88th Birthday Celebration.

During her brief remarks at the estate, she thanked enthusiastic supporters and applauded their willingness to travel from around the world to visit the King of Rock ‘n Roll’s personal home.

“It’s been a while; I missed you,” Presley opened her remarks Sunday.

After a member of the audience shouted, “We love you, Lisa,” she responded: “And I love you.”

“I keep saying you’re the only people that can bring me out of my house. I’m not kidding,” Presley added, drawing a laugh from those in attendance.

“Today, he [Elvis Presley] would have been 88 years old. That’s hard to believe,” his daughter said. “I think that he would be proud.”

She also commented on the film “Elvis,” released in 2022, to much fanfare. Austin Butler (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “The Dead Don’t Die”) played the titular role in the musical drama that showed the star’s childhood and his rise to fame in the 1950s.

The film also starred Tom Hanks, who played Elvis’ manager, Colonel Tom Parker.

“I think the movie was incredible,” Presley said Sunday, Jan. 8. “I am very proud of it and I hope you guys are too.”

The soft-spoken Presley also said she “really appreciated” how people “come from all over the world” to visit Graceland and honor her father.

“It’s moving to me and my family. Thank you,” she said before waving to the crowd and exiting the stage.

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — The music that changed the world started as the music of slaves, plowboys and outlaws in five states along the Mississippi River.

Today, that roots music carries a host of names, such as Americana, which Grammy-winning songwriter Rodney Crowell can define succinctly, if a bit mysteriously.

“I always say when people ask me, ‘What is Americana music?’ ” said Crowell, who is an Americana Music Association board member, “I would say it’s poetry driven.”

It is the poetry of hardscrabble lives encompassing blues, folk and rock ‘n’ roll.

Now, Leiper’s Fork businessman and musician Aubrey Preston and the Franklin-based Americana Music Association are launching the Americana Music Triangle — an ambitious, multistate tourism venture they hope can pull the different styles, stories and places under one umbrella for the sake of musical preservation and economic development.

Preston, who helped create the statewide Discover Tennessee Trails and Byways program, believes a musical- and cultural-based trail program could be a boon for tourism across the Deep South. If successful, its impact could be felt along the three points of the triangle — from Broadway in Nashville to Beale Street in Memphis to Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

💭 Tatjana Patitz, iconic ’90s supermodel, has died. She was 56. Tatjana was most known as one of the original supermodels alongside Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington. The group of elite models also appeared together in George Michael’s music video for his hit song, ‘Freedom! ’90.’

Patitz shot to fame in January 1990, when she appeared alongside Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington wearing Giorgio di Sant’ Angelo bodysuits and Levi jeans on the cover of British Vogue.

Photographed in black and white by Peter Lindbergh, it was a landmark moment for minimal 90s fashion. But for the women themselves, the image became a coronation for the “supermodels”, defining them as ultimate icons of that decade’s popular culture. And it was this cover that caught the attention of George Michael, who asked them to lip sync in his memorable Freedom! ’90 music video.

The arch elegance of the German-born model’s strong-boned beauty and statuesque, athletic physique made her a favourite at Chanel and Versace, for whom she starred on catwalks and in campaigns. But she retained a low profile, making her home in California, away from the fashion party circuit.

“She was far less visible than her peers – more mysterious, more grown-up, more unattainable – and that had its own appeal,” remembered Anna Wintour, the chief operating officer of Condé Nast and global editorial director of Vogue.

Patitz was still modelling in 2019, when she walked the catwalk for Etro at Milan fashion week, and was photographed for Vogue with her son Jonah Johnson.

Born in Hamburg to an Estonian mother and German father, Patitz moved with her family to Skanör, a seaside town in southern Sweden. Already a competitive horse rider, in 1983 she entered an elite model contest in Stockholm and was placed third. The prize was a trip to Paris and a short-term contract.

Success did not happen overnight. According to a Vogue profile in 1988: “A star was not quickly born. Tatjana found no work for a year.”

Meeting Lindbergh would change her career. Known for his preference for a “natural” look and resistance to retouching images, the German photographer shot Patitz in his “White Shirts: Six Supermodels, Malibu,” for Vogue in 1988 before shooting her for the famous 1990 cover. Patitz would go on to retain longstanding working relationships with Lindbergh, as well as Herb Ritts and Patrick Demarchelier.

Despite coming of age with some of the most famous models in the world – it was also in 1990 that Linda Evangelista claimed her cohorts wouldn’t wake up for less than $10,000 (£8,200) a day – Patitz was not interested in living in New York or Paris, instead buying a ranch on the west coast. She briefly tried her hand at acting, and appeared in Sean Connery’s film Rising Sun. She also became interested in environmental and wildlife issues, and was one of the models who appeared in Peta’s famous “We’d rather go naked than wear fur”.

Outspoken, too, about the dangers the industry had on the new generation, in 2009 she told the Guardian: “It would be nice if models were allowed to be a more healthy weight – for the models, and for the young women who look up to them. We were athletic and healthy, and we looked like women.”

In his book 10 Women, Peter Lindbergh wrote of his longtime muse: “I admire Tatjana because she always stays herself. She’s very soft, but at the same time she’s very strong and knows how to stand up for what she thinks, and it’s always very enriching to be with her. It’s impossible not to admire her and over the years not to be just a little bit in love with her.”

Patitz is survived by her son, 19-year-old Jonah.

Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of rock legend Elvis Presley and ex-wife of pop icon Michael Jackson, died on Thursday at the age of 54 following cardiac arrest.

News of Presley’s untimely death was confirmed by her mother, Priscilla, in a statement on Thursday.

“It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us,” Priscilla Presley said. “She was the most passionate strong and loving woman I have ever known. We ask for privacy as we try to deal with this profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers. At this time there will be no further comment.”

Lisa Marie Presley’s death comes just two days after she attended the Golden Globe awards where actor Austin Butler won the award for his portrayal of her father in the Baz Luhrmann-directed Elvis.

“I have seen Baz Luhrmann’s movie Elvis twice now, and let me tell you that it is nothing short of spectacular. Absolutely exquisite. Austin Butler channelled and embodied my father’s heart and soul beautifully,” said of the movie back in May.

“In my humble opinion, his performance is unprecedented and FINALLY done accurately and respectfully. (If he doesn’t get an Oscar for this, I will eat my own foot, haha.) You can feel and witness Baz’s pure love, care, and respect for my father throughout this beautiful film, and it is finally something that myself and my children and their children can be proud of forever,” she added.

Lisa Marie Presley suffered cardiac arrest at her Calabasas, California, home on Thursday, and was rushed to a local hospital. Someone reportedly administered epinephrine at the scene, and Presley was able to regain a pulse after CPR was performed.

Presley went into “full arrest” and was rushed to a hospital after EMTs responded to her home, according to TMZ.

A source directly connected to Presley told the outlet that paramedics performed CPR at her house before taking her to the hospital, and that they were able to regain a pulse before she was transported.

It remains unclear as to what prompted Presley’s cardiac arrest.

Lisa Marie Presley was born in 1968 roughly nine months after her father, Elvis, married his wife Priscilla. She was briefly raised in Memphis until she moved to Los Angeles in 1973 following her parents’ divorce.

Elvis died in August 1977, making 9-year-old Lisa Marie the joint heir to his estate alongside grandfather Vernon Presley and great-grandmother Minnie Mae Hood Presley. Following their respective deaths in 1979 and 1980, she became the sole heir and also inherited her father’s Graceland residence,” as noted by People.

Presley began her singing career in the late 90 and went on to release three studio albums — “To Whom It May Concern” (2003), “Now What” (2005) and “Storm & Grace 2012.”

Ethiopian World Federation, an organisation established in the United States in 1937 to promote love and good-will among Ethiopians at home and abroad, has made surprising stance on world celebrated performing artist, Madonna Louise Ciccone — who adopted four Malawians.

The Federation, which has since transformed into a global diaspora organisation, is asking the Malawi leader, President Lazarus Chakwera to prevent “homosexual and transgender” allegations over the adoption of the Malawian children for possible “human trafficking and social experiments”.

In opening the investigations, the Federation is also asking Chakwera to look into the integrity of Madonna’s Malawi charity, Raising Malawi — and “restrict her and her associates accessibility to Africa and to African children as a precautionary measure until a thorough investigation is done into child trafficking, sex exploitation, sexual slavery, adoption reversal, threat of coercion, fraud, deception and abuse of power or vulnerability”.

The Federation quotes Malawi Penal Code that provides in Section 137A: ‘Indecent practices between females. Any female person who, whether in public or private, commits any act of gross indecency with another female person, or procures another female person to commit any act of gross indecency with her, or attempts to procure the commission of any such act by any female person with herself or with another female person, whether in public or private, shall be guilty of an offense and shall be liable to imprisonment for five years’.

The petition makes references to a book that Madonna wrote in 1992 called ‘SEX’, which “features adult content including softcore pornography and simulations of sexual acts including sadomasochism (the derivation of sexual gratification from the infliction of physical pain or humiliation either on another person or on oneself)”.

“Gay porn stars were photographed in pornographic pictures with Madonna performing vulgar sex acts with the same sex which should have been disclosed during her adoption case in 2006 in Lilongwe, Malawi.

“Madonna had to sign a contract that forbade the book from including images of child pornography, bestiality, or religious imagery. Shortly after signing that agreement, Madonna founded a company called Maverick, a partnership with Time Warner.

“She now holds total artistic control over any work released by Maverick, who is now the book’s publisher. The agreement she signed with Time Warner with the sexually explicit content in the book Sex was null and void.”

The petition further says the “psychology behind her ability to release child pornography, religious imagery, bestiality and vulgar pornography has prompted her to open an orphanage in Malawi named ‘Raising Malawi’ in 2006 to host social experiments on vulnerable African children in Malawi”.

It adds that in the same 2006 when Madonna founded the charity “she falsely accused [David Banda’s] father of being absent” when she was applying to adopt him.

Madonna is being accused of using David Banda “for sexual exploitation and social experiments today”. Pictures are awash on social media of David Banda wearing female clothes, makeup and wearing earrings — whilst the two holding hands like two lovers.

The organisation further says Justice Fiona Mwale, who presided over the adoption application, is alleged to have made “a series of harsh questioning of [Madonna’s] motives” — and quotes the Judge as saying in her judgement: “In determining her motives, I questioned the petitioner at length about the impact of her decision which could be construed as robbing Malawi of its most precious resource, its children.”

“We firmly believe that Malawi has been robbed of its most precious resource — its children,” contends Ethiopian World Federation. “In 2013, the country accused Madonna of ‘bullying’ state officials and making diva demands — and of citing her Raising Malawi charity as the reason for doing so.

“After another appeal, the Supreme Court granted Madonna the right to adopt her second child from Malawi, Mercy James. In 2017, Malawi granted the singer permission to adopt again, and she became mother to twin baby girls Esther and Stella Mwale.

“After careful review and facts presented regarding the psychological, physical and mental abuse of African children on January 11, 2018, the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa confirmed that Ethiopian Parliament passed new legislation banning adoptions by foreigners on January 9, 2018.

“In 2019, nearly 70% of human trafficking victims in the U.S. were identified as either being sex trafficked, or victims of both forced labor and sexual exploitation.

“The High Court recently stated that 25 million people worldwide are not afforded their fundamental right to freedom; however, the International Labor Organization estimates the number of human trafficking victims to be approximately 40 million,” said the petitioners — citing the link https://sites.uab.edu/humanrights/2021/12/13/the-current-state-of-sex-trafficking-and-celebrity-perpetrators/.

The petition also accused the government of Malawi of failing “to do a complete social background check on the adoptive parent” and they have reason to believe that Madonna “is using these children as a social experiment in response to the heavy LGBTQ community push for sodomy in America”.

“We, the global diaspora, the Black People of the World at the Ethiopian World Federation, Incorporated are concerned that the integrity of Africa and the cultural traditions should be preserved, not exploited or discredited.

“In 2013, Malawi accused Madonna of exaggerating her contributions to the impoverished country and unreasonably demanding special treatment during a tour there and Madonna has used social media to discredit the culture and policies that Malawi has in place to protect our children globally.”

The organisation says, concerned about the welfare of all black people of the world, the Ethiopian World Federation has existed since 1937 “in order to effect unity, solidarity, liberty, freedom and self-determination — to secure justice and maintain the integrity of the entire African continent, which is our divine heritage and a policy we uphold, defend and protect”.
