Ethiopia: Holy Days And Highland Rock Churches

Posted by addisethiopia / አዲስ ኢትዮጵያ on April 3, 2015

ETHIOPIA--use_3255071b

You see a society in which profound spiritual belief (Christianity came here in the fourth century) is interwoven into every aspect of life. Most people here have very little, but those you meet and talk to – and having a guide makes it easier to do that – seem rich in ways that many of us in the developed world have lost.

Christian belief is woven into every aspect of life in Ethiopia, as Anna Murphy discovers when she joins one of the country’s most important religious festivals

You know you are somewhere very special when even a drive to the airport is enrapturing. It was our last day in Ethiopia, and we were on our way to catch an internal flight from Lalibela to Addis Ababa, en route to London.

We had been to Lalibela – one of the most celebrated stops on the so-called northern circuit of the Ethiopian Highlands – to see its stone churches. And remarkable they were, carved into and out of the pink-hued rock between the 12th and 15th centuries, both delicate and monumental, and still very much alive – full of priests and monks and nuns and hermits and worshippers, all of them wrapped in white, as every good Ethiopian Christian is when he or she visits church.

Virtually every day of the year there will be a church somewhere in Ethiopia celebrating its saint’s day, but it’s best to time your visit to coincide with one of the great Orthodox Christian festivals, such as Easter. Known as Fasika, it usually occurs a week to two weeks after the Western Church’s Easter. It follows eight weeks of fasting from meat and dairy, and culminates in a church service on Easter eve lasting several hours and ending at 3am. Afterwards, worshippers break their fast and celebrate the risen Christ.

My own visit coincided with Timkat, in January, one of the most important festivals of the year. It’s a kind of mass baptism in which locals gather early in the morning by their church’s pool (each church has one) to be splashed and sprayed with holy water. It was such a joyous thing to witness, as everyone – from very young to very old – excitedly waited en masse for jugs of water to be thrown out over the crowd.

But it is that drive that sticks in my mind. It was market day in Lalibela and, as our charming and indefatigable guide Sammy Tilahun told us, people walked from more than 12 miles away to attend. At 8am the road was packed, not with vehicles – driving around this vast, beautiful, often mountainous country, you usually have the road to yourself – but with people and animals on the move. Many of the women and children were dressed in the traditional embroidered cotton dresses, the men wrapped in large swaths of cotton, or – on a couple of occasions – bath towels (evidently something of a step up). Some were herding goats, others cattle with enormous horns, others heavily loaded pack mules. Some – usually women – were carrying vast Byzantine bundles of twisted firewood on their backs, or unidentifiable bunches on their heads. For them it was a long walk, hard work, but it was also a social occasion – people were talking, smiling, hanging out, step by step, hour by hour.

Those 30 minutes from the window summed up much that is wonderful about Ethiopia. You see a life largely untouched by this century, and a couple of earlier ones. You see a society in which profound spiritual belief (Christianity came here in the fourth century) is interwoven into every aspect of life. Most people here have very little, but those you meet and talk to – and having a guide makes it easier to do that – seem rich in ways that many of us in the developed world have lost. Of course it is easy, and distasteful, to be dewy-eyed. Poverty is everywhere. But so too is a kind of peace, contentment. This is a country that makes even an atheist like me ponder organised religion as a force for good.

But there were other, much quieter experiences that also helped make my time in Ethiopia so remarkable. Here is a country with incredible cultural riches, including religious art that to me in its sublime colour and creativity matches the Byzantine churches of Ravenna and the Chora Church of Istanbul. And it allows you an intimacy with art that is an impossibility in the developed world. In the Nakuta La’ab monastery, for example, built into a cave in the cliffs near Lalibela, we were alone with the priest, who showed to us and only us the pages of a beautifully illuminated 700-year-old manuscript with wide-eyed Madonnas and horse-riding martyrs, all rendered in dazzling reds and blues.

Again, at the incredible Ura Kidane Mihret monastery, on the shores of Lake Tana, we were alone in what was, quite simply, one of the most remarkable places I’d ever been. A circular building, one of the two favoured structures in the Ethiopian Orthodox church, its interior walls are covered with… well, where to begin? With the Madonna again, or saint Mary as the Ethiopians call her; with assorted other saints; with the two archangels-cum-dudes complete with Afros (looking straight out of Earth, Wind and Fire); with martyrs (40 of them, their heads in a row in the sea); with leopards and lions; with the disembodied heads and wings of a choir of angels; with the three Kings. The paintings are between 100 and 250 years old, and were designed to be “read” by the illiterate worshippers. They tell stories we know from our own Bible, but also those from the additional 14 books in the Ethiopian bible. One of my favourites, and one of the most important to Ethiopians, is of the saint Abune Gebre Menfes Kidus. He is pictured with fur on his body, flanked by the lions and leopards that are his friends; beside one eye is a little bird who drinks from the tears he sheds whenever he prays.

I could go on. And indeed one day I hope to: Ethiopia is such a fascinating country that I am already planning to return. To be continued…

Easter ‘Blood Moon’ to Turn sky Red This Weekend – But Was it Predicted in The Bible?

Posted by addisethiopia / አዲስ ኢትዮጵያ on April 2, 2015

BloodMoonMAIN

Saturday’s total lunar eclipse, which will turn the moon a burnt reddish orange, will be visible in in the skies of North America, Asia and Australia

— It’s the third blood moon in the ‘Tetrad’ that will end in September

—  Red moons are predicted in the Bible and signify important events

— Experts predict the rare phenomenon will be visible in the skies between Friday and Sunday and one US pastor believes it could be a sign of Christ’s return

The moon is set to turn a sinister-looking blood red this Easter weekend.

The total lunar eclipse will transform the moon on Saturday night and will be visible in the skies of North America, Asia and Australia.

According to one US pastor, the event was predicted in the Bible and hints at an imminent world-changing event, but Nasa is quick to point out that the change in hue is entirely harmless.

The eclipse is the third in a series of four blood moons, with the final one expected on September 28.

Pastor John Hagee told The Mirror that the sight suggests a world-changing event will take place, as predicted in the Bible.

According to the King James Bible: ‘The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord comes.’

Mr Hagee, who has written a book on the Tetrad called ‘Four Blood Moons’, said that because the Blood Moon falls on Easter Weekend, it’s a sign that ‘something dramatic will happen which will change the whole world’.

The event is called a Tetrad since it involves four successive total blood red lunar eclipses each followed by six full moons.

I believe we’re going to see something dramatic happen in the Middle East involving Israel that will change the course of history in the Middle East and impact the whole world,’ he said.

The strange celestial sight, which will be visible in the US, was predicted in the Bible and could hint at a world-changing event, such as the return of Christ, according to one pastor. This image shows the red moon over a church in LA during the last blood moon in October last year

There are numerous mentions of blood moons in the Bible, such as in the Book of Joel, chapter two, which says the ‘Day of the Lord will be as when the sun refuses to shine’ and in Luke, which hints that signs in the sun, moon and stars will tell of the second coming.

While the Bible prophesises blood moons, it does not give a timeline of when the significant event will happen.

Mr Hagee said: ‘It just says “when you see these signs” – and four blood moons is a very significant one – ‘”the end of this age is coming.”’

While the event may be of huge religious significance to some people, for others it will simply be a chance to see something beautiful light up the night sky.

The lunar eclipse will occur when the moon passes behind the Earth, into its shadow.

During the eclipse, the moon often looks reddish because sunlight has passed through Earth’s atmosphere, which filters out most of its blue light,’ Nasa said.

This eerie, harmless effect has earned the tongue-in-cheek nickname “blood moon”’

The ‘Tetrad’ of four alignments within two years, happens just a few times in every 2,000 years.

TheCrossChainTetradThe final blood moon of the Tetrad will occur on September 28 and there will be nine sets of them in the 21st century.

But Nasa has previously said that the Tetrad only happened three times in the past 500 years.

From 1600 to 1900, for example, there were none at all.

According to Mr Hagee, each time the Tetrad has happened during that time, there has been a significant religious event accompanied with it.

In 1493, the first Tetrad saw the expulsion of Jews by the Catholic Spanish Inquisition.

The second happened in 1949, right after the State of Israel was founded.

And the most recent one, in 1967, happened during the Six-Day War between Arabs and Israelis.

— The first of the Tetrad blood moons happened on April 15, right in the middle of the Jewish holiday of Passover.

— The second, on October 8, occurred during the Feast of the Tabernacle.— The third, this Saturday is also occurring during Passover and on Easter –weekend.

— The final one happens on September 28, 2015, during the Feast of the Tabernacles.

A tornado ripped through parts of Oklahoma, destroying homes and leaving at least one person dead. But amid the destruction, one image is being shared across social media that is bringing hope in the affected community.

A high schooler, named Chase Rhodes, in Moore, Oklahoma took a picture of power pole Wednesday that was left hanging in the form of a cross surrounded by destruction. He captioned the tweet “God is with us,” and it has been retweeted and shared thousands of times.

SATAN’S THRONE – About to Be Darkened by Prophetic Solar Eclipse

Posted by addisethiopia / አዲስ ኢትዮጵያ on March 19, 2015

CrossSolarEclipse

Jerusalem was darkened two thousand years ago at the crucifixion – Matthew 27:45, Mark 15:33, and Luke 23:44-45 all comment on it. Luke wrote “tou heliou ekleipontos” – that the sun failed. This was a crucial day for the souls of mankind, when the price for salvation was paid.

When a solar eclipse occurs on the spring equinox (the very day when “light overtakes darkness” and the hours of daylight grow longer than the hours of darkness) over the North Pole (a location known for being the throne of false gods) should we make note of the heavenly symbolism?

Especially at this point in time, YES! The Bible tells us that the generation that sees Israel re-created as a nation will see all other end times prophecy come to pass. Even if you ignore all the other specific clues we have been given, even if you ignore all the signs we are supposed to watch for, this one concept alone lets us know the end times are due very soon, as a generation is about 70 years. Israel was reborn when it declared independence in 1948 and fought its war of independence until 1949. Regardless of your opinion of Israeli politics, the mere existence of Israel for over 66 years means that (if you believe the Bible) EVERYTHING IN PROPHECY is coming soon – and the Antichrist must take center stage three and a half years before the final reckoning on Judgment Day.

So I believe it is time to pay close attention to rare signs in the heavens, like the March 20 eclipse over the North Pole. My Ryrie Study Bible comments on a reference to “the north” in Jeremiah 50:3 “…out of the north. In Jewish thought, the origin of anything sinister.”

Revelation 2:13 says “I know where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is”

Revelation 16:10-12 says “Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became darkened”

Isaiah 14:12-14 “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the NORTH: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.”

The following excerpt from the book: Antichrist 2016-2019 discusses related points:

Satan attempts to have a throne in the extreme north of the sky, where all the other stars in the heavens appear to rotate around the North Pole Star. This is where the L-shaped constellation Draco the Dragon represents Satan, until there is a pole shift and he falls to earth. Draco’s “L” shape is the basis of the “twisted serpent” of Isaiah 27:1 and even the Hebrew letter “L” (lamed) and the Arabic letter “L” (laam) and the Arabs’ “Allah.” This is where the Maya and other ancient cultures place their false god “about to fall from his throne in the polar center.

Even American Christians have a “false god” at the North Pole. He rides a sky chariot like Apollo, and the eight animals attached to his chariot are like the eight planets of the sun god. He steals most of the attention from Jesus on a holiday when Christians should be contemplating their savior’s willingness to be born as a human to bring us the message of salvation, and instead we focus on material things like presents. This North Pole deity “knows when we’re naughty or nice” and as children we sometimes fear his judgment in late December when he leaves his North Pole throne. The false god is celebrated with a tree (axis) with a bright (pole) star at the top. He comes down the chimney through the fire if necessary, and won’t enter through the door of your house – which is especially interesting in light of John 10:9 when Jesus says “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved.” And of course the name, Santa, is practically spelled the same as Satan. These are not coincidences; the Santa story has a dark side related to Satan and a pole shift.”

So what, you may ask? So what if the North Pole is associated with all sorts of false subsitutes for God – from the Mayan false god (Seven Macaw) – to the savior-like son sent to Earth by a guy in a black suit with a serpent in a pentagram emblem (Jor-El, father of Superman) – to Satan – to Santa Claus – all different types of substitutes for Jesus Christ – so what if there is an eclipse over their North Pole throne? Prophetically, why should that mean anything?

The Bible tells us from the very beginning (Genesis 1:14) to watch the sky for signs. As William Frederick wrote in a different article posted here: “This 20th of March, a 15 MILLION year event is going to happen. There will be a total solar eclipse visible from the North Pole just as the sun is rising…That an eclipse of that magnitude happens on the North Pole on that specific day is a 500,000 year event. That said day corresponds with the religious new year is a 15 MILLION year event (multiplying the former quantity for the 30 days of Nisan in the Hebrew calendar).”

Also keep in mind this SOLAR eclipse comes in the middle of four LUNAR eclipses that fall exactly on the Jewish holidays of Passover and Sukkot in 2014 and 2015. Mark Biltz, John Hagee, and others have written books about the FOUR BLOOD MOONS and the symbolic meaning of these eclipses and their rare lineups with Jewish holidays. Major events have occurred within a year of the last three sets of holiday blood moon eclipses, and I expect another historical and prophecy-fulfilling event within a year of the current set of blood moon eclipses.

The World – In 1492 the Jews were expelled from Spain, the Spanish officially discovered the Americas, and the Jews spread out to live in many new countries. This worldwide diaspora included the United States, where eventually there were more Jews than in Israel. Within one year of these historical events there was a holiday tetrad of blood moons in 1493 and 1494.

The Nation of Israel – Israel was re-established as a nation in 1948, and within a year of this independence there was a blood moon tetrad on the Passovers and Sukkots of 1949 and 1950.

The City of Jerusalem – Israelis reunited all of Jerusalem under Jewish rule after recapturing East Jerusalem and the Temple Mount in 1967. Within a year, there was a similar tetrad in 1967 and 1968.

The Temple – Some Israelis have wanted to build a new Jewish Temple on the Temple Mount ever since 1967. With Hamas rockets being fired from Gaza into Jerusalem as I write this, the possibility exists that one could destroy the Dome of the Rock Mosque. If it is destroyed, whether by war or a fanatic or any other cause, such destruction would remove the main obstacle to Jewish claims over the entire Temple Mount. Or perhaps the lost Ark of the Covenant is discovered, prompting the establishment of a Temple to properly house it. My research points to the reestablishment of some form of Third Temple in Jerusalem no later than June 6, 2016. This would be within a year of the tetrads of holiday blood moons in 2014 and 2015 and seems to fit the increasingly focused geographical fulfillment of prophetic events near blood moon tetrads.”

I strongly suspect that the eclipses this year are significant end times signs.

The spirit of a pure Christianity: Exploring Ethiopia’s stunning subterranean churches

BeteGiyorgisWhen he ventured into the mysterious subterranean churches of Ethiopia, Evgeny Lebedev not only visited one of the world’s architectural marvels, he experienced a humble Orthodox Christianity which shames Russia’s own.

Nowhere in Lalibela is as impressive, however, as the building they finished last. That is the Bet Giyorgis, or the Church of St George, and it is there – it being St George’s saint’s day – that the crowds are gathered and from where the chanting comes.

Ethiopia was cut off for centuries from the wider Christian world by the Islamic conquests to its north. During that time, its church flourished in isolation, untouched by and ignorant of the theological disputes dividing Europe. That means its traditions provide insight into an older, perhaps purer and certainly more mystical form of Christianity – one that dates back 1,600 years and therefore, in its unaltered forms, bears witness to a liturgy practised only a relatively brief period after the time of Jesus Christ.

As a Russian, I come from a country that is part of the Orthodox tradition. Culturally, the Russian Orthodox Church is my church – although little I have seen ever enamoured it to me. One only has to consider its hounding of punk-rock protesters Pussy Riot, or its cosy relationship with the state, or the sense of avarice that seems to emit from it, to realise why. In recent years, reports have emerged that a car repair and tyre service was being run underneath Christ the Saviour, Moscow’s largest Orthodox cathedral, and that a brothel was being run on land rented by Sretensky Monastery. Archpriest Mikhail Grigoriev of Kazan was discovered to own a BMW jeep, a Mercedes jeep and a Mercedes saloon as well as three flats and a country house. He was secretly filmed boasting about his £12,000 mobile phone and love of Italian designer clothes. This year, there have been allegations of sexual assault by Russian Orthodox clergy, with students supposedly plied with alcohol before being abused.

The church’s head, Patriarch Kirill, a man who regularly criticises Western commercialism and publicly called feminism “very dangerous”, was even caught out by his own hypocrisy: two years ago, his press team issued a photograph of a meeting in Ukraine in which Kirill’s $30,000 Swiss Breguet watch was airbrushed out. Unfortunately for them, they had overlooked its reflection on a polished table top.

Ethiopia’s Orthodox Church appears very different. On the ground, the impression I get is overwhelmingly one of a clergy committed to personal humility. Again and again I meet priests living lives just as humble as their congregations. They are keeping true to the tenet of their faith that they must forgo almost all possessions and dedicate themselves totally to the spiritual life. This, I feel, gives them considerable moral authority.
