For starters, feces were found far more often in commercial sectors, covering “approximately 50% of street segments in Key Commercial Areas and 30% in the Citywide survey,” second only to broken glass as can be seen in the ‘illegal dumping’ section.

If you’re wondering about the city’s fecal methodology, look no further than a footnote on page 43;

Feces also includes bags filled with feces that are not inside trash receptacles. Feces that are spread or smeared on the street, sidewalk, or other objects along the evaluation route are counted. Stains that appear to be related to feces but have been cleaned are not counted. Bird droppings are excluded.

As far as where most of the poo is found, Nob Hill takes the top spot, followed by the Tenderloin and The Mission districts.

“It’s terrible; this street is covered,” Tenderloin resident Joe Souza told The San Francisco Standard earlier this month. “There’s poop everywhere. You always see it along the wall and in front of the garage there.”

As the San Francisco Standard reports;

San Francisco’s commercial and residential streets are also highly tagged up, with every neighborhood except one—Visitacion Valley—reporting high levels of graffiti last year. The issue is once again worse in commercial areas, of which 71% said they had severe or moderate graffiti.

“In terms of actual counts of graffiti observed, there were about 10 times (160,000 vs. 16,000 respectively) as many instances of graffiti reported in the Key Commercial Areas survey in comparison to the Citywide sample,” the report said.

And San Francisco’s favorite cleanliness fixation, human or animal feces, continues to be a sore spot for the city: Almost half of the surveyed commercial areas observed feces. Citywide, that figure was just 30%.

San Francisco’s POOPOCALYPSE comes amid a staggering commercial office vacancy rate as a combination of pandemic-era work-from-home policies, and people fleeing the city’s notorious violence and poo-covered streets have made the once-thriving city into a ghost town.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 5.1 quake in Ethiopia near Ādīgrat, Tigray, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Monday, December 26th, 2022, at 3:21 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.3.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Ādīgrat (pop. 65,000) located 62 km from the epicenter, Adi Keyh (pop. 13,100) 73 km away, and Mek’ele (pop. 215,500) 127 km away.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos have both reportedly invested in Synchron, a new brain-computer interface startup that aims to compete with companies like Elon Musk’s Neuralink.

Bloomberg reports that in March of last year, Tom Oxley, an expert in brain-computer interfaces, had dinner with Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, to discuss Oxley’s newly established company, Synchron Inc. During the dinner, which took place in Ojai, California, Bezos expressed interest in investing in the business.

On Thursday, Synchron announced that it had completed a funding round of $75 million, with Bezos Expeditions contributing a portion of the investment. The round was led by ARCH Venture Partners and included investment from Gates Frontier, the venture capital branch of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, as well as other investors. In addition, several previous investors, including Khosla Ventures and its founder, Vinod Khosla, who introduced Oxley to Gates, also participated in the funding round.

Brain-computer interfaces, also known as BCIs, have the potential to interpret and stimulate certain areas of the brain and are being explored as a possible treatment for brain injuries. According to Oxley in an interview, the new investors approached Synchron “through the lens of making an impact in neurology in an area of need.” Oxley estimates that approximately 100 million people worldwide have upper limb impairment and could potentially benefit from this technology.

This funding brings Synchron’s total funding to $145 million, making it one of the highest-funded companies in the brain-computer interface (BCI) space, according to research firm Pitchbook. While it may be behind companies such as Elon Musk’s Neuralink Corporation and Max Hodak’s Science Corp. in terms of fundraising, it is still far ahead of many other BCI companies. This is a significant achievement, especially considering the costly process of getting BCIs approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Synchron has already enrolled three patients in a U.S. trial, with two of them receiving the implant. Oxley expects the remaining patients to enroll and receive their implants in the coming months. Over the course of a year, doctors will observe these patients and report their findings to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In the past, the FDA granted Synchron “breakthrough” status, which streamlined the approval process for the company.

💭 Southwest China Quake Leaves 46 Dead, Triggers Landslides

At least 46 people were reported killed and 16 missing in a 6.8 magnitude earthquake that shook China’s southwestern province of Sichuan on Monday, triggering landslides and shaking buildings in the provincial capital of Chengdu, whose 21 million residents are already under a COVID-19 lockdown.

The quake struck a mountainous area in Luding county shortly after noon, the China Earthquake Networks Center said.

Sichuan, which sits on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau where tectonic plates meet, is regularly hit by earthquakes. Two quakes in June killed at least four people.

The death toll rose to 46 with 16 missing as the search for trapped people continued Monday night, state broadcaster CCTV said.

Earlier, authorities had reported 7 deaths in Luding county and 14 more in neighboring Shimian county to the south. Three of the dead were workers at the Hailuogou Scenic Area, a glacier and forest nature reserve.

Along with the deaths, authorities reported stones and soil falling from mountainsides, causing damage to homes and power interruptions, CCTV said. One landslide blocked a rural highway, leaving it strewn with rocks, the Ministry of Emergency Management said.

Buildings shook in Chengdu, 200 kilometers (125 miles) away from the epicenter. Resident Jiang Danli said she hid under a desk for five minutes in her 31st floor apartment. Many of her neighbors rushed downstairs, wary of aftershocks.

“There was a strong earthquake in June, but it wasn’t very scary. This time I was really scared, because I live on a high floor and the shaking made me dizzy,” she told The Associated Press.

The earthquake and lockdown follow a heat wave and drought that led to water shortages and power cuts due to Sichuan’s reliance on hydropower. That comes on top of the latest major lockdown under China’s strict “zero-COVID” policy.

The past two months in Chengdu “have been weird,” Jiang said.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a magnitude of 6.6 for Monday’s quake at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). Preliminary measurements by different agencies often differ slightly.

China’s deadliest earthquake in recent years was a 7.9 magnitude quake in 2008 that killed nearly 90,000 people in Sichuan. The temblor devastated towns, schools and rural communities outside Chengdu, leading to a years-long effort to rebuild with more resistant materials.

💭 የሚገርም ነው፤ ባለፈው ሳምንት ላይ ከአንድ ትሁት የአፍጋኒስታን ተወላጅ ጋር ስለ አፍጋኒስታንና ኢትዮጵያ ለረጅም ጊዜ ያህል ስናወራ ነበር። በአንድ ወቅት ላይ፤ “በመላው ዓለም እየካሄደ ያለው የሃይማኖት ጦርነት ነው፤ ‘ጀላል’ ይመጣና ከዚያ ኢሳ’ ይከተላል…ዛሬ ታሊባኖች ካቡል ከገቡ በኋላ ሁሉም ነገር እየተሻለ ነው፤ የፓሽቶ ጎሣ የሆኑት የአፍጋኒስታን አብዛኛዎቹ ነዋሪዎች ከፓኪስታን ፓሽቱዎች ጋር እየሠሩ ነው፤ በቅርቡ “ፓኪስታን ኬኛ!” እንላለን፤ ካሁን በኋላ ምዕራባውያኑ አንድ የቤተ ሰቤን አባል የሚገድሉ ከሆነ እኔም እዚህ ብዙዎችን ይዤ እጠፋለሁ!” ሲለኝ፤ “ኡ! ኡ! በአንድ ዓመት ብቻ ከሚሊየን በላይ ክርስቲያኖችን በአረቦችና ቱርኮች የተጨፈጨፉብን እኛ ኢትዮጵያውያን ወይ ግድየለሾች ነን አልያ ደግሞ ሁሉን ነገር ለበቀል አምላክ እግዚአብሔር ትተንለታል! ማለት ነው” ነበር ያልኩት።

በተጨማሪ ከዚሁ ጋር በተያያዘ፤ እርቀት የማይወስነው መለኮታዊ ኃይል በአትላንቲክ ውቂያኖስ አፍሪቃ ጠረፍ በምትገኘውና የስፔይን ግዛት በሆነችው የላስ ፓልማስ ደሴት ኃይለኛ የእሳተ ገሞራን ቀስቅሷል። ይህ በጣም የሚፈራው እሳተ ገሞራ የሚፈጥረው የመሬት መንሸራተትና፣ የሱናሚ ጎርፍ አውሮፓን እና ምስራቅ አሜሪካን አውድሞ በብዙ ሚሊየን የሚቆጠሩ ሰዎችን ሊገድል ይችላል። ይህ ለብዙ ዓመታት ሲጠብቅ የነበረ አስፈሪ ትንቢት ነው። የቱሪስቶች መናኸሪያ ከሆኑት ከካናሪ ደሴቶች መካከል በሆነችው ላስ ፓልማስ ልክ ከወር በፊት እሳተ ገሞራው ፈንድቶ የላቫ ፍሰቱ እስከ ዛሬው ዕለት ድረስ ቀጥሏል። ከደሴቲቷ ሰማኒያ አምስት ሺህ ነዋሪዎች መካከል አሥር ሺህ የሚሆኑት ተፈናቅለዋል። ።

አንዳንድ ታዋቂ ሳይንቲስቶች እርግጠኞች ሆነው እንደሚናገሩት ከዚህች ደሴት የሚቀሰቀሰው ከፍተኛ የእሳተ ገሞራ በሰሜን አሜሪካ ምስራቃዊ ዳርቻ (ኒው ዮርክ) እና የሜዲትራንያን ባሕር አዋሳኝ በሆኑ የአውሮፓ ሃግራት በሚሊዮን የሚቆጠሩ ሰዎችን ሊገድል ይችላል፤ ይህ እስኪሆን ድረስ የጊዜ ጉዳይ ብቻ እንደሆነም ያስጠነቅቃሉ።

በኤዶማውያኑ እና እስማኤላውያኑ የዓለማችን ፈላጭ ቆራጮች የበላይነት እየተመራ በእነ አረመኔው ግራኝ አብዮት አህመድ አሊ በትግራይ ሕዝብ ላይ እየተካሄደ ያለው ግፍ የኛዎቹን ከሃዲዎች ብቻ ሳይሆን መላው ዓለምን በማያውቁትና ባላሰቡት መልክ ያስጨንቃቸዋል፤ ገና ደም ያስለቅሳቸዋል። ቀላል ነገር እንዳይመስለን! የእግዚአብሔር ቅዱሳን ከፍተኛ ጦርነት ላይ ናቸው። የጽላተ ሙሴን እና የቅዱሳኑን ኃይል ለመፈተነ/ለመፈታተን ሲሉ ነው ከተባበሩት መንግሥታት ድርጅት እስከ ሃያላኑ ሃገራት ሁሉም በህብረት ጸጥ ብለው ኮሮና ያላጠፋችላቸውን ሕዝባችንን ለመበቀልና የሕዝባችንን ሰቆቃ ዓይኖቻቸውን ገልጠው በማየት ላይ የሚገኙት። ግን ቀድመው አንድ በአንድ በእሳቱ የሚጠረጉት እነርሱው ይሆናሉ።
