The Pentagon formally dropped its COVID-19 vaccination mandate Tuesday, but a new memo signed by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also gives commanders some discretion in how or whether to deploy troops who are not vaccinated.

Austin’s memo has been widely anticipated ever since legislation signed into law on Dec. 23 gave him 30 days to rescind the mandate. The Defense Department had already stopped all related personnel actions, such as discharging troops who refused the shot.

“The Department will continue to promote and encourage COVID-19 vaccination for all service members,” Austin said in the memo. “Vaccination enhances operational readiness and protects the force.”

Austin said that commanders have the authority to maintain unit readiness and a healthy force. He added, however, that other department policies — including mandates for other vaccines — remain in place. That includes, he said, “the ability of commanders to consider, as appropriate, the individual immunization status of personnel in making deployment, assignment, and other operational decisions, including when vaccination is required for travel to, or entry into, a foreign nation.”

The contentious political issue, which has divided America, forced more than 8,400 troops out of the military for refusing to obey a lawful order when they declined to get the vaccine. Thousands of others sought religious and medical exemptions. Austin’s memo ends those exemption requests.

💭 Tatjana Patitz, iconic ’90s supermodel, has died. She was 56. Tatjana was most known as one of the original supermodels alongside Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington. The group of elite models also appeared together in George Michael’s music video for his hit song, ‘Freedom! ’90.’

Patitz shot to fame in January 1990, when she appeared alongside Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington wearing Giorgio di Sant’ Angelo bodysuits and Levi jeans on the cover of British Vogue.

Photographed in black and white by Peter Lindbergh, it was a landmark moment for minimal 90s fashion. But for the women themselves, the image became a coronation for the “supermodels”, defining them as ultimate icons of that decade’s popular culture. And it was this cover that caught the attention of George Michael, who asked them to lip sync in his memorable Freedom! ’90 music video.

The arch elegance of the German-born model’s strong-boned beauty and statuesque, athletic physique made her a favourite at Chanel and Versace, for whom she starred on catwalks and in campaigns. But she retained a low profile, making her home in California, away from the fashion party circuit.

“She was far less visible than her peers – more mysterious, more grown-up, more unattainable – and that had its own appeal,” remembered Anna Wintour, the chief operating officer of Condé Nast and global editorial director of Vogue.

Patitz was still modelling in 2019, when she walked the catwalk for Etro at Milan fashion week, and was photographed for Vogue with her son Jonah Johnson.

Born in Hamburg to an Estonian mother and German father, Patitz moved with her family to Skanör, a seaside town in southern Sweden. Already a competitive horse rider, in 1983 she entered an elite model contest in Stockholm and was placed third. The prize was a trip to Paris and a short-term contract.

Success did not happen overnight. According to a Vogue profile in 1988: “A star was not quickly born. Tatjana found no work for a year.”

Meeting Lindbergh would change her career. Known for his preference for a “natural” look and resistance to retouching images, the German photographer shot Patitz in his “White Shirts: Six Supermodels, Malibu,” for Vogue in 1988 before shooting her for the famous 1990 cover. Patitz would go on to retain longstanding working relationships with Lindbergh, as well as Herb Ritts and Patrick Demarchelier.

Despite coming of age with some of the most famous models in the world – it was also in 1990 that Linda Evangelista claimed her cohorts wouldn’t wake up for less than $10,000 (£8,200) a day – Patitz was not interested in living in New York or Paris, instead buying a ranch on the west coast. She briefly tried her hand at acting, and appeared in Sean Connery’s film Rising Sun. She also became interested in environmental and wildlife issues, and was one of the models who appeared in Peta’s famous “We’d rather go naked than wear fur”.

Outspoken, too, about the dangers the industry had on the new generation, in 2009 she told the Guardian: “It would be nice if models were allowed to be a more healthy weight – for the models, and for the young women who look up to them. We were athletic and healthy, and we looked like women.”

In his book 10 Women, Peter Lindbergh wrote of his longtime muse: “I admire Tatjana because she always stays herself. She’s very soft, but at the same time she’s very strong and knows how to stand up for what she thinks, and it’s always very enriching to be with her. It’s impossible not to admire her and over the years not to be just a little bit in love with her.”

Patitz is survived by her son, 19-year-old Jonah.

Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of rock legend Elvis Presley and ex-wife of pop icon Michael Jackson, died on Thursday at the age of 54 following cardiac arrest.

News of Presley’s untimely death was confirmed by her mother, Priscilla, in a statement on Thursday.

“It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us,” Priscilla Presley said. “She was the most passionate strong and loving woman I have ever known. We ask for privacy as we try to deal with this profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers. At this time there will be no further comment.”

Lisa Marie Presley’s death comes just two days after she attended the Golden Globe awards where actor Austin Butler won the award for his portrayal of her father in the Baz Luhrmann-directed Elvis.

“I have seen Baz Luhrmann’s movie Elvis twice now, and let me tell you that it is nothing short of spectacular. Absolutely exquisite. Austin Butler channelled and embodied my father’s heart and soul beautifully,” said of the movie back in May.

“In my humble opinion, his performance is unprecedented and FINALLY done accurately and respectfully. (If he doesn’t get an Oscar for this, I will eat my own foot, haha.) You can feel and witness Baz’s pure love, care, and respect for my father throughout this beautiful film, and it is finally something that myself and my children and their children can be proud of forever,” she added.

Lisa Marie Presley suffered cardiac arrest at her Calabasas, California, home on Thursday, and was rushed to a local hospital. Someone reportedly administered epinephrine at the scene, and Presley was able to regain a pulse after CPR was performed.

Presley went into “full arrest” and was rushed to a hospital after EMTs responded to her home, according to TMZ.

A source directly connected to Presley told the outlet that paramedics performed CPR at her house before taking her to the hospital, and that they were able to regain a pulse before she was transported.

It remains unclear as to what prompted Presley’s cardiac arrest.

Lisa Marie Presley was born in 1968 roughly nine months after her father, Elvis, married his wife Priscilla. She was briefly raised in Memphis until she moved to Los Angeles in 1973 following her parents’ divorce.

Elvis died in August 1977, making 9-year-old Lisa Marie the joint heir to his estate alongside grandfather Vernon Presley and great-grandmother Minnie Mae Hood Presley. Following their respective deaths in 1979 and 1980, she became the sole heir and also inherited her father’s Graceland residence,” as noted by People.

Presley began her singing career in the late 90 and went on to release three studio albums — “To Whom It May Concern” (2003), “Now What” (2005) and “Storm & Grace 2012.”

The future of vaccines may look more like eating a salad than getting a shot in the arm. UC Riverside scientists are studying whether they can turn edible plants like lettuce into mRNA vaccine factories.

Messenger RNA or mRNA technology, used in COVID-19 vaccines, works by teaching our cells to recognize and protect us against infectious diseases.

One of the challenges with this new technology is that it must be kept cold to maintain stability during transport and storage. If this new project is successful, plant-based mRNA vaccines — which can be eaten — could overcome this challenge with the ability to be stored at room temperature.

The project’s goals, made possible by a $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, are threefold: showing that DNA containing the mRNA vaccines can be successfully delivered into the part of plant cells where it will replicate, demonstrating the plants can produce enough mRNA to rival a traditional shot, and finally, determining the right dosage.

Chloroplasts

Chloroplasts (magenta color) in leaves expressing a green fluorescent protein. The DNA encoding for the protein was delivered by targeted nanomaterials without mechanical aid by applying a droplet of the nano-formulation to the leaf surface.

“Ideally, a single plant would produce enough mRNA to vaccinate a single person,” said Juan Pablo Giraldo, an associate professor in UC Riverside’s Department of Botany and Plant Sciences who is leading the research, done in collaboration with scientists from UC San Diego and Carnegie Mellon University.

“We are testing this approach with spinach and lettuce and have long-term goals of people growing it in their own gardens,” Giraldo said. “Farmers could also eventually grow entire fields of it.”

Key to making this work are chloroplasts — small organs in plant cells that convert sunlight into energy the plant can use. “They’re tiny, solar-powered factories that produce sugar and other molecules which allow the plant to grow,” Giraldo said. “They’re also an untapped source for making desirable molecules.”

In the past, Giraldo has shown that it is possible for chloroplasts to express genes that aren’t naturally part of the plant. He and his colleagues did this by sending foreign genetic material into plant cells inside a protective casing. Determining the optimal properties of these casings for delivery into plant cells is a specialty of Giraldo’s laboratory.

For this project Giraldo teamed up with Nicole Steinmetz, a UC San Diego professor of nanoengineering, to utilize nanotechnologies engineered by her team that will deliver genetic material to the chloroplasts.

“Our idea is to repurpose naturally occurring nanoparticles, namely plant viruses, for gene delivery to plants,” Steinmetz said. “Some engineering goes into this to make the nanoparticles go to the chloroplasts and also to render them non-infectious toward the plants.”

For Giraldo, the chance to develop this idea with mRNA is the culmination of a dream. “One of the reasons I started working in nanotechnology was so I could apply it to plants and create new technology solutions. Not just for food, but for high-value products as well, like pharmaceuticals,” Giraldo said.

Giraldo is also co-leading a related project using nanomaterials to deliver nitrogen, a fertilizer, directly to chloroplasts, where plants need it most.

Nitrogen is limited in the environment, but plants need it to grow. Most farmers apply nitrogen to the soil. As a result, roughly half of it ends up in groundwater, contaminating waterways, causing algae blooms, and interacting with other organisms. It also produces nitrous oxide, another pollutant.

This alternative approach would get nitrogen into the chloroplasts through the leaves and control its release, a much more efficient mode of application that could help farmers and improve the environment.

The National Science Foundation has granted Giraldo and his colleagues $1.6 million to develop this targeted nitrogen delivery technology.

“I’m very excited about all of this research,” Giraldo said. “I think it could have a huge impact on peoples’ lives.”

The Phase 3 trial of an mRNA influenza vaccine has begun at two major pharmaceutical companies, Moderna and Pfizer.

A major Phase 3 clinical trial assessing the efficacy, safety, tolerability, and immunogenicity of Pfizer’s quadrivalent modified RNA (modRNA) influenza vaccine candidate in about 25,000 healthy U.S. adults has begun dosing participants, the pharmaceutical giant reported last month.

“For years, there has been a need to better address the burden of influenza, despite the use of existing seasonal flu vaccines. Our experience with RNA viruses and mRNA technology has given us an even deeper understanding of the opportunity to potentially provide more efficacious vaccines that could further reduce the yearly rates of the severe outcomes of viral disease like flu, including hospitalization and death,” claimed Annaliesa Anderson, Ph.D., Senior Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer, Vaccine Research and Development, Pfizer.

“We are excited to start the first Phase 3 efficacy study of an mRNA-based influenza vaccine that could potentially deliver an improved flu vaccine to help address the significant burden of this disease,” she added.

Pfizer ensures that its clinical trial participants properly represent the racial and ethnic diversity of the countries in which they are conducted.

“The impact of flu on racial and ethnic minority groups in the U.S. is even larger. Black Americans are 1.8 times more likely than their white counterparts to be hospitalized for flu while Latino and Indigenous Americans are 1.2 and 1.3 times more likely, respectively,” according to the news release.

💭 South Africa’s chief justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has rejected concerns that he could be endangering people’s health by linking coronavirus vaccines to a “satanic agenda”.

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has defended a prayer he delivered at the Tembisa Hospital on 10 December 2020, saying there was nothing untoward about the prayer because South Africa was a secular state. Mogoeng prayed against corruption and COVID-19 vaccines, which he said might be harmful to humans. Mogoeng also said that he never said he was against vaccines, but against vaccines that may ‘corrupt’ DNA and called on God to destroy it.

Worries have quickly surfaced that people might avoid vaccination as a result of Mogoeng’s comments.

The Guardian reports: After South Africa began hosting the continent’s first coronavirus vaccine trial, anti-vaccine activists protested against Africans being used as test subjects.

Two decades ago, the then-president Thabo Mbeki questioned whether HIV caused Aids, which has ravaged the country.

Mogoeng, who frequently displays his Christian faith while performing his duties, prayed at a public event on Thursday that people should be spared any vaccine that sought to “advance a satanic agenda of the mark of the beast”.

Addressing questions about this at a news conference on Friday to release a judiciary report, he said: “If there is any vaccine that is deliberately intended to do harm to people, that vaccine must never see the light of day. I cry unto God to stop it.”

Mogoeng added: “I don’t think the vaccine must ever be compulsory … You can’t impose a vaccine on people. Why should you?”

The Sunday Times Daily news site quoted Barry Schoub, a virology professor at Wits University and head of a ministerial advisory committee on Covid-19, as saying: “It is unfortunate that someone of that stature is misleading people because vaccines are such a major part of controlling this epidemic and it is unfortunate that someone with such influence is opposing efforts to control it.”

But Mogoeng said he would not be silenced: “I don’t care about the consequences. We’ve been quiet for far too long, toeing the line.”
