በጀግነነት መውጣታቸውን ልናሳውቃችሁ ነው፤ ክርስትና ይህ ነው!

አባቶቼ፤ እኛን ጊዜ እየገዙ ማታለል ይቻል ይሆናል፤ እግዚአብሔርን ግን በጭራሽ ማታለል እንደማይቻል ታውቁታላችሁ፤ ስለዚህ ጊዜውን ተዋጁ! ለዓለም ዓቀፍ ሁኔታዎች ትኩረት ስጡ፤ እህት ክርስቲያን ሃገር በሆነችው አርሜኒያ በክርስቲያን ወገኖቻችን ላይ በፊትም አሁንም እየደረሰባት ስላለው ጥቃት ኢትዮጵያውያን እንዲያውቁ አድርጉ፤ በእኛም ላይ ተመሳሳይ ጥቃት ነውና እየተፍእጸመብን ያለው፤ ምዕመናንን ለመጨረሻው ፍልሚያ ቀስቅሷቸው፣ አነሳሷቸው! ወገን እግዚአብሔር በሰጠው ሃገሩ በክብርና በፍትህ ለመኖር እንዲችል እንደ አርሜኒያው አባት “በጎቼን፣ ቤተ ክርስቲያኔን እና ሃገሬን አሳልፌ አልሰጥም!” በማለት መሪነቱን ያዙ፣ አርአያም ሁኑት። እስኪ ተመልከቱት፤ ፕሮቴስታንቱ “ለብቻየ ናቸው” የሚላቸው ከመቶ በላይ ሃገራት አሉት፣ ሙስሊሙም “የኔ ብቻ” የሚላቸው ሃምሳ ሃገራት አሉት፤ ካቶሊኩም እንዲሁ፤ ለኢትዮጵያውያን ያላቸው አንዲት ብቸኛ ሃገር ኢትዮጵያ ናት፤ ታዲያ ይህችን እግዚአብሔር የሰጣቸውን ትንሽ፡ ግን ታላቅ ሃገር እንዴት ለእግዚአብሔርና ለእኛ ጠላት አሳልፈን ለመስጠት እንፈቅዳለን?!

Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day 2023 – Today Marks 108 Years Since Armenian Genocide

✞ እ.ኤ.አ. 2023 የአርሜኒያ የዘር ማጥፋት መታሰቢያ ቀን ፥ ዛሬ በአርሜኒያ የዘር ማጥፋት ወንጀል ፻፰/108 ዓመታትን አስቆጥሯል✞

አርመን ወገኖቻችን መታሰቢያውን ላለፉት መቶ ስምንት ዓመታት በየዓመቱ በዚህ ዕለት በትጋት በከፍተኛ ሥነ ስርዓት ያስቡታል። የኛስ? በአክሱም ጽዮናውያን ላይ የተፈጸመው የዘር ማጥፋት ወንጀል ሰለባ የሆኑትን ወገኖቻችንን በሁለት ዓመት ውስጥ ብቻ ረስተን ምንም ነገር ሳናደርግ ልናልፍ ነውን? ይህን ከፈቀድን በዚህ ዓለም መኖር አይገባንም። ለዚህ ኃላፊነቱን መውሰድ የነበረባቸው በቤተ ክህነት ውስጥ ተሰግስገው የገቡትና ዛሬ ፈሪሳውያን መሆናቸውን ያወቅናቸው “አባቶች” ናቸው። አንዳንዶቻችን ግን በጭራሽ አንረሳውም፤ ልንረሳውም አንችልም፤ በዚህም ዓለም በወዲያኛውም ዓለም ወንጀል ፈጻሚዎቹና አጋሮቻቸው ለፍርድ የሚቀርቡበትን ሥራ እንሠራለን።

የአርሜኒያ ጀነሳይድ የጀመረው በጎርጎሮሳውያኑ አቆጣጠር ሚያዝያ 24 ዕለት 1915 ዓ.ም ላይ ሲሆን የአክሱም ኢትዮጵያውያን ደግሞ በጥቅምት ፳፬/24 ዕለት (ቅዱስ ጊዮርጊስ /አቡነ ተክለሐይማኖት)፳፻፲፫/2013 ዓ.ም ነው።

በኢትዮጵያ ኦርቶዶክስ ክርስቲያኖች ላይ ዛሬ ከአርሜኒያው የዘር ማጥፋት ወንጀል ያላነሰ የዘር ማጥፋት ወንጀል እየተፈጸመ ነው። ታች በእንግሊዝኛ ታይም መጋዚን ያቀረበውን ጽሑፍ ስናነብ ቱርኮች በአርሜኒያ ወገኖቻችን ያኔ የፈጸሙትን ዛሬ ከጋላ-ኦሮሞ አጋሮቻቸው ጋር ሆነው በተመሳሳይ መልክ በትግራይ ፈጽመውታል፤ ነገ ደግሞ በአማራ ክልል እና በአርሜኒያ ላይ ለመፈጸም በዝግጅት ላይ ናቸው። ቱርኮቹ/የአዘርበጃን አዛሪዎቹ እና ጋላ-ኦሮሞዎቹ እነ ግራኝ የሚጠቀሟቸው የጥላቻ ቃላትም በጣም ተመሳሳይ ናቸው።

በኢትዮጵያ እየተካሄደ ላለው የዘር ማጥፋት ወንጀል ተጠያቂዎቹ የውስጥም የውጭም ቡድኖች፣ ፓርቲዎች፣ ፖለቲከኞች፣ ማሕበረሰቦች፣ ግለሰቦች፣ ሜዲያዎች ወዘተ በተጠቂው ወገናችን ሞት ላይ በመሳለቅ ላይ ናቸው፣ ተጠያቂነታቸውን ይሸፋፍናሉ፣ ፍትሕ እንዳይሰፍን ሤራዎችን በመጠንሰስ ላይ ናቸው። ሰላም ሳይኖር ሰላም ሰላም እያሉ የወገኖቻችንን መታሰቢያ ለማጥፋት እየተንቀሳቀሱ ያሉትን ሕወሓቶችን፣ ሻዕቢያዎችን፣ የአማራ፣ ጋላ-ኦሮሞ እና ኦሮማራ ቡድኖችንና ግለሰቦችን ለፍርድ ሳናቀርብ እንቅልፍ የለንም፤ በጭራሽ!

በኢትዮጵያ ያንዣበበው መጠነ-ሰፊ የክርስቲያኖች ፍጅት በቅድስት አርሴማ ወገኖች ላይ ከታየው የከፋ ነው

👉 በአርመኖች ላይ የዘር ፍጅት በተፈጸመ በ25 ዓመት ውስጥ ጨካኙ ናዚ አዶልፍ ሂትለር የሚከተለውን ተናግሮ ነበር፦

“ደግሞስ ዛሬ የአርሜንያውያንን መጥፋት የሚናገር ማነው?”

አዶልፍ ሂትለር ወዲያው ፮/ 6 ሚሊየን አይሁዶችን ለመጨፍጨፍ ወሰነ።

👉 በተመሳሳይ መልክም ለስላሳ-መሳዩ የኦሮሚያ ሂትለር ግራኝ አህመድ አሊ፤ “የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ ነገሮችን በቶሎ ይረሳል”(ሾርት ሜሞሪ አለው)ብሎን ነበር።

✞ የአርሜኒያ ዕልቂት (1915 – 2020)

ከ105 ዓመታት በፊት በግራኝ አብዮት አህመድ አሊ ሞግዚት በክርስቶስ ተቃዋሚዋ ቱርክ በተካሄደው የጅምላ ጭፍጨፋ ሁለት ሚሊየን ክርስቲያን አረመን ወገኖቻችን ስልታዊ በሆነ መንገድ ተፈጅተዋል።

አርሜኒያ ቅድስት አርሴማ ለሰማዕትነት የበቃችባት ሃገር ናት።

በዘመነ ኮሮና በመሀምዳውያኑ ወራሪ ቱርኮች የተፈጸመው አሰቃቂው የአርሜኒያ ክርስቲያኖች ዕልቂት ፻፭ኛ/105ኛ ዓመት መታሰቢያ ለመጀመሪያ ጊዜ ሰው ሳይገኝበት በትናንትናው ዓርብ ዕለት ታስቦ ውሏል ይህ በተለይ በዛሬዎቹ ኢትዮጵያውያን ዘንድ በቅርብ ሊመለከቱት የሚገባ ታሪካዊ ሂደት ነው።

ከ105 ዓመታት በፊት መሀመዳውያኑ ቱርኮች ጎራዴና ጠመንጃ በመያዝ ልዩ የቀለም ምልክት ወደ ተደረገባቸው የክርስቲያኖች ቤቶች በማምራት በርና መስኮት እየሰባበሩ ዘው ብለው ከገቡና የቤተሰብ እናቶችን ባሎቻቸው ፊት ከደፈሩ በኋላ ያርዷቸው ነበር። ጨቅላ ሕፃናትን ቤት ውስጥ ካገኙ ወደ ውጭ በማውጣት እንደ ፊኛ ወደ ሰማይ ይወረውሯቸውና በሳቅና በጭፈራ ጉራዴዎቻቸውን ከፍ አድርገው በመያዝ ሕፃናቱ ጎራዴው ላይ እንዲሰኩ በማድረግ ይገድሏቸው ነበር። እግዚኦ! ቱርክ ይህን ጭካኔ የተሞላበትን ታሪኳን ተቀብላ ይቅርታ ለመጠየቅ እንኳን እስካሁን ድረስ ፈቃደኛ አይደለችም። ከታሪክ የማይማሩ ሰዎች ስህተታቸውን ይደግማሉ እንዲሉ አገራችንን በመክበብ ላይ ያለቸው(ሶማሊያ፣ ሱዳን፣ ጂቡቲ) ቱርክ የኃይማኖት ማጽዳት እና የዘር ማጥፋት ዘመቻውን በድጋሚ ታካሂዳለች። ለጊዜው በሶሪያ እና ኢራቅ በመለማመድ ላይ ነች፤ ከምዕራባውያኑ እርዳታ ጋር።

አሁን ቱርክ እየተባለች የምትጠራዋ ሃገር፡ እግዚአብሔር ለአርመኖች እና ግሪኮች የሰጣቸው ሃገር ናት። ይህች ሃገር ከብዙ ዕልቂት በኋላ በቅርቡ ከወራሪ ቱርኮች ሙሉ በሙሉ ከጸዳች በኋላ ተመልሳ የአርመናውያን እና የግሪኮች ሃገር እንደምትሆን እንደ አባ ፓይሶስ የመሳሰሉ ግሪካውያን የበርሀ አባቶች ተንብየዋል።

በሃገራችንም የእነዚሁ ቱርኮች ወኪሎች ዓይናችን እያየ ተመሳሳይ የዘርና ሃይማኖት ማጽዳት ተግባር እያሳሳቁና እያታለሉ ቀስበቀስ በመካሄድ ላይ ናቸው። እነ አብዮት አህመድ ኢትዮጵያውያንን በየቤተ ክርስቲያናቸው ሳይቀር በገደሉ ማግስት፤ “እንደመር፣ ችግኝ እንትከል፣ ቆሻሻ እናጽዳ፣ ፓርክ እንስራ ፣ ፒኮክ እናቁም” እያሉ ልክ በባሌ፣ በጅማ፣ በሻሸመኔ፣ በድሬዳዋ፣ በሐረር፣ በቢኒ ሻንጉል፣ በደብረ ማርቆስ፣ በጅማ፣ በናዝሬት፣ በቡራዮ፣ ለገጣፎ፣ ጌዲኦ፣ ሱሉልታ፣ አጣዬ፣ በአዲስ አበባ፣ በላሊበላ እንደታየው የዘርና ኃይማኖት ማጽዳት ዘመቻውን ተራ በተራ በማካሄድ አሁን የምንገኝበት በጣም አሳዛኝ የሆነ ደረጃ ላይ ለመድረስ በቅተዋል። ሆኗቸዋል። አንድ ዙር ጭፍጨፋና ቃጠሎ ካካሄዱ በኋላ “አልተደመሩም” በማለት በእስር ጨለማ ጉድጓድ ውስጥ ያስገቧቸውን ኢትዮጵያውያንን ይለቅቃሉ ፥ በዚህም ሕዝቡ ይረሳሳል፣ ተመልሶ ይተኛል። የሚቀጥለውን ዙር የዘር ማጽዳት ዘመቻ ካካሄዱ በኋላም ተመሳሳይ እርምጃ ይወስዳሉ። አዎ! ለሰብአዊ መብት እንቆማለን የሚሉት የዓለም አቀፍ ተቋማት፣ ኤምባሲዎችና ሜዲያዎችም ፀጥ ለጥ እንዲሉ ተደርገዋል። ለገዳይ አብይ የኖቤል ሽልማት የሰጡት የሚፈሯቸውን ተዋሕዶ ክርስቲያኖችን እንዲያስወግድላቸው መሆኑን ያው አሁን በደንብ እያየን ነው።

በምዕራባውያኑ በደንብ የተቀነባበረ በቱርኮችና በአረቦች የተደገፈ የዘርና ሃይማኖት ማጽዳት ዘመቻ እየተካሄደ ነው። አዲስ አበባን የሚጎበኙ የውጭ ሰዎች፤ “የተለመደውን የኢትዮጵያውያን ፊት ማየት አቅቶናል፣ ካሜሩን ወይም ጋና ያለን ነው የምትመስለው” እያሉ ነው።

የኢትዮጵያን ማንነት በመጤ ኦሮሞና እስላም ማንነት የመቀየር ብሎም ኢትዮጵያን የማጥፋት ተልዕኮ የተሰጣቸውና የኑሮ ዋስትናቸውን በህዝብ ብጥብጥ፣ ምከራ፣ ስቃይ እና ዕልቂት ላይ መሠረት ያደረጉት እንደ እነ አብዮት አህመድ የመሳሰሉት የኢትዮጵያ ጠላቶች የእነ አርሜኒያ እና ሩዋንዳ ታሪክ ለመድገምና ደም ለጠማው አምላካቸው መሰዋዕት ለማቅረብ ጓግተዋል፤ አሁን ኮሮናን እያመሰገኑ የመጨረሻውን ዝግጅታቸውን በማገባደድ ላይ ናቸው።

ኢትዮጵያ በየትኛውም የዓለማችን ክፍል ታይቶ በማይታወቅ መልክ ሊካሄድ ለሚችል የዘርና ሃይማኖት ፍጅት በጣም ተቃርባለች። በመጭዎቹ የክረመት ወራት በሰፊው ሊቀሰቅሱት ያሰቡትን የኮሮና ወረርሽኝ ተገን በማድረግ ከጎረቤት ሃገራት ሳይቀር (በጂቡቲ፣ ኤርትራ፣ ሱዳን፣ ሶማሊያ፣ ኪኒያ እየተዘጋጁ ነው)በተቀነባበረ የወረራ ዘመቻ በቫይረሱ የተዳከመውን ሕዝበ ክርስቲያን ለመጨፍጨፍ አንድ የፊሽካ ትዕዛዝ መስማት ብቻ ነው የቀራቸው። ልክ ከ 500 ዓመታት በፊት ግራኝ አህመድ ቀዳማዊ ከ”ኦሮሞዎች” ጋር በማበር ያን ሁሉ ዕልቂት እንደፈጸመው። ወረርሽኙ የእሳት ጎርፍ ሆኖ እነርሱን አስቀድሞ ይጨርሳቸው!

ዋናው የክፋት፣ የመርገም፣ የመቅሰፍት ወቅት ገና አልመጣም፤ ጊዜው የመከራ መሆኑን እያየነው ነው። አታላዮችን፣ ፌዘኞችና ከሃዲዎችን የሚጠላ እና ኢትዮጵያዊ ነኝ የሚል ወገን እጅና እግሩ መንቀሳቀስ በሚችሉበት በዚህ ጊዜ ዛሬውኑ በቃኝ ማለት አለበት፤ እንደገና መታለል የለበትም፤ ዝም ሊልም በጭራሽ አይገባውም፤ በአባቶቹና እናቶቹ፣ በወንድሞቹና በእህቶቹ እንዲሁም በልጆቹ እስካሁን ካየነው የከፋ ጥፋት ሳይደርስ፤ ቅድስት አርሴማን ከሰጠችን አርሜኒያ ፈጥኖ በመማር ጂኒዎቹን አብዮት አህመድን አሊንና የጥፋት አጋሮቹን ለመጠራርግ ቶሎ መነሳት አለበት ።

✞ Don’t Just Remember the Armenian Genocide. Prevent It From Happening Again

Every year on April 24 we mark the 1915 Armenian genocide, in which up to 1.5 million Armenians perished at the hands of the Ottomans. But this year, we should also reflect on the present day, for Armenians are again facing a new set of atrocities as the world watches on with indifference.

Over the past year, ethnic Armenians have endured decapitations, sexual mutilation, cultural destruction, dehumanizing statements by authorities, and a constant threat of attacks—all coming from Azerbaijan, with direct military and economic support from Turkey, the successor nation of the Ottoman Empire.

The situation has descended into a humanitarian crisis as Azerbaijan has thwarted the movement of families, food, and medical supplies along Armenia’s border, a move condemned by the International Court of Justice and, just yesterday, the U.S. State Department.

This threat to today’s Armenians resurfaced in September 2020, when Azerbaijan launched an attack on Nagorno-Karabakh—a disputed territory inhabited principally by ethnic Armenians but internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, based on territorial lines drawn by the Soviet Union, which once controlled the area. The attack marked the beginning of the 44-day war, which saw over 6,500 killed and tens of thousands displaced. When a ceasefire was signed in December of that year, Azerbaijan ended up taking over most of Nagorno-Karabakh.

To the world, the war ended, but on the ground, the brutality against Armenians has continued.

But what concerned me most on my recent fact-finding trip to Armenia, my third in the last year, is that the rights abuses I had previously witnessed in Nagorno-Karabakh—including indiscriminate killings, torture, and arbitrary detention—are now being carried out by Azerbaijan in sovereign Armenian territory with impunity.

In March, my team and I documented the recent bombing of buildings, homes, a cemetery, and tourist sights in Armenia. We walked through school hallways adorned with children’s drawings of their burning homes and posters teaching kids to identify cluster bombs and other unexploded ordnances. Perhaps most unsettling were the videos we were shown by a woman who fled her village of Azerbaijani soldiers beheading and mutilating the bodies of her neighbors.

And as we met with torture victims and displaced families, we remained vigilant—since Azerbaijani soldiers, who had set up posts in Armenian territory nearby, had been shooting at people in their range of vision.

Azerbaijan’s preparation, persecution, dehumanization, and denial—each considered a “stage” of genocide—has prompted Genocide Watch to issue a genocide warning about Armenians under attack by Azerbaijan. Others in the global community, including the United States, have also expressed alarm. Following the shelling of Armenian villages in September last year, then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Congressman Adam Schiff condemned Azerbaijan’s attacks, and Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez called for immediate cessation of economic assistance to Azerbaijan.

The outrage was fleeting, however, and Azerbaijan has yet to have been held to account.

Two years ago today, U.S. President Joe Biden made history when he formally recognized the Armenian genocide, promising to “remain vigilant against the corrosive influence of hate in all its forms” and to “recommit ourselves to speaking out and stopping atrocities that leave lasting scars on the world.”

For his statements to be more than mere words, the U.S. government must take action to discourage and deter Azerbaijan’s attacks against ethnic Armenians and any further incursion into sovereign Armenian territory. Those who have carried out egregious abuses against Armenians must be held to account.

One theme was pervasive in nearly every interview we conducted during our fact-finding trip: Armenians and residents of Nagorno-Karabakh insisted that the abuses we witnessed were part of a larger campaign to eradicate Armenians in the region. While some may dismiss these claims as alarmist, statements by leading Azerbaijani officials suggest otherwise.

Over the past decade, Azerbaijani officials have invoked language used in the Rwandan genocide and the Holocaust, referring to Armenians as a “cancer tumor” and a “disease” to be “treated.” More recently, the country’s authoritarian leader Ilham Aliyev has threatened to “drive [Armenians] away like dogs” and “treat” Armenians because they are “sick” with “a virus [that] has permeated them.” The Baku government even issued a 2020 commemorative stamp depicting a person in a hazmat suit “cleansing” Nagorno-Karabakh.

Equally concerning are Azerbaijan’s statements on conquering Armenia: Since Aliyev took power, officials have declared, “Our goal is the complete elimination of Armenians,” and claimed Armenians “have no right to live in this region.” Aliyev has asserted that “Yerevan is our historic land and we, Azerbaijanis, must return to these Azerbaijani lands…This is our political and strategic goal.” Last week he stated: “One day [Armenians] may wake up to see the Azerbaijan Flag above their heads.”

When tyrants and bullies speak, it is wise to heed what they say. Words may not kill—but they often lead directly to actions that do.

💭 A Nigerian woman, identified as Chizoba Favour Eze, has died after she was allegedly brutalised by policemen in Ethiopia.

According to multiple sources, the young woman died because of injuries inflicted on her by the police personnel attached to Kaliti prison, a maximum security prison in Addis Abba.

SaharaReporters learnt that Eze, who was an inmate in the facility, died on Sunday.

It was gathered that her corpse was left inside the cell for over 36 hours by the prison management who allegedly prevented other inmates from informing the Nigerian embassy about the incident.

“A Nigerian woman, Chizoba Favor Eze has been brutalised to death at Kaliti Prison in Ethiopia. She died on the 12/3/2023. It’s so sad that the policemen killed our sister. They gave her internal injury on her chest after brutally hitting her on the breasts which led to her death.

“After a week, she started feeling sick because of the result of the internal injuries she had inside her body. They took her to the hospital for the first time to receive treatment and the doctor gave her injection and they brought her back to her room. The deceased started feeling weak again and they took her to the hospital on Saturday being 11/3/2023, then they brought the same injection which the deceased complained bitterly that the injection was not good on her body, she added that she didn’t want take any injection again, and they gave her the injection forcefully.

“On Sunday morning she died. She died inside her room which made the other foreigners, such as Brazilian, Venezuelan women and others felt bad because the injection the deceased took led to her death.

“The foreigners went through the bag of the deceased and took the Nigerian embassy’s telephone number in order to call the embassy, because the deceased body was there with them in the room for over 36 hours, so the foreigners decided to call the embassy of Nigeria to tell them what was happening, the police women refused that they should call the embassy.

“The foreigners started protesting, and the police women called the police men to the zone, when they came, they started beating all the foreigners brutally and wounded so many of them, of which some of them that went to court yesterday (Monday) complained bitterly to the judges. We are calling on the embassy of Nigeria in Ethiopia to help us,” a source told SaharaReporters.

SaharaReporters had recently reported that over 300 Nigerians were presently languishing in the Ethiopian prison facility.

Some of them had called on the Nigerian government to facilitate their transfer to prisons in Nigeria.

The detainees said they suffer grave human rights abuses in prison.

In a letter addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Nigerian embassy in Ethiopia, they also complained of starvation, lack of access to medical care, corporal and capital punishment, and overcrowding.

“The Nigerian inmates in Kaliti maximum prison Ethiopia are soliciting help from the Nigerian government; we ask that the government come to our aid urgently.

“We lack access to water, food and medical care. We are asking the government to intervene so we can serve the rest of our jail terms in Nigeria. Many of us have fallen ill due to malnourishment, the health infrastructure is weak, and inmates are suffering from precarious health issues,” part of the letter read.

‘The Anglican Church is considering a gender-neutral God. May God forgive them for they know not what they do,’ Putin declared.

‘Millions of people in the West understand they are being led to a real spiritual catastrophe,’ he added.

He went on to accuse Western nations of changing historical facts to suit ‘woke’ ideologies and staunchly criticized the Church’s recent discussions on allowing priests to ‘bless’ same-sex marriages.

Any potential alterations, which would mark a departure from traditional Jewish and Christian teachings dating back millennia, would have to be approved by the Synod, the Church’s decision-making body.

It is currently unclear what would replace the term Our Father in the Lord’s Prayer, the central Christian prayer which Jesus Christ is said to have instructed his followers to say together down the generations.

Rev Dr Ian Paul earlier this month told The Telegraph that any change would represent an abandonment of the Church’s own doctrine: ‘The fact that God is called ”Father” can’t be substituted by ”Mother” without changing meaning, nor can it be gender-neutralised to ”Parent” without loss of meaning,’ he said.

A Church of England spokesperson meanwhile said there are ‘absolutely no plans’ to consider a gender-neutral God.

🔥 Turkey hit by new 6.4-magnitude earthquake

Tremor shakes southern province of Hatay, which was worst-affected region in quake two weeks ago.

A powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake has hit Turkey’s southern province of Hatay, terrifying those left in a region devastated by powerful twin earthquakes two weeks earlier.

The quake, less powerful than the initial 7.8 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes which tore a path of destruction through southern Turkey and northern Syria on 6 February, albeit threatened yet more devastation in a region that had seen many people flee their destroyed homes for the safety of other towns and villages outside of the earthquake zone.

It struck at a depth of just two km (1.2 miles), the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said, potentially magnifying its impact at ground level. It was centred near the southern Turkish city of Antakya and was felt in Syria, Egypt and Lebanon.

“It was the first day we’d decided to stay in our house as it’s just one floor, and I was using our heater to try and stay warm, demonstrating what to do in case another earthquake happened,” said Ata Koşar in the Hatay town of Ekinci, who lost his brother, his sister-in-law and his nephew when their nearby luxury apartment block collapsed during the first earthquake.

“I was laying on the floor, and as I was laying there another earthquake happened. We heard what sounded like more buildings collapsing again, and more damage to our house,” he said mournfully.

Witnesses said rescue teams were checking people were unharmed.

Muna al-Omar, a resident of Antakya, said she was in a tent in a park when the earthquake hit. “I thought the earth was going to split open under my feet,” she said, crying as she held her seven-year-old son in her arms.

“Is there going to be another aftershock?” she asked.

The death toll from the quakes two weeks ago rose to 41,156 in Turkey, the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority AFAD said on Monday, and it was expected to climb further, with 385,000 apartments known to have been destroyed or seriously damaged and many people still missing.

The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, said construction work on nearly 200,000 apartments in 11 earthquake-hit provinces of Turkey would begin next month.

Hours earlier, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said on a visit to Turkey that Washington would help “for as long as it takes” as rescue operations and aftershocks were winding down, and focus turned to towards urgent shelter and reconstruction work.

Among the survivors of the earthquakes are about 356,000 pregnant women who urgently need access to health services, the UN sexual and reproductive health agency (UNFPA) has said.

They include 226,000 women in Turkey and 130,000 in Syria, about 38,800 of whom will deliver in the next month. Many of them were sheltering in camps or exposed to freezing temperatures and struggling to get food or clean water.

In Syria, already shattered by more than a decade of civil war, most deaths have been in the northwest, where the United Nations said 4,525 people were killed. The area is controlled by insurgents at war with forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, complicating aid efforts.

Syrian officials say 1,414 people were killed in areas under the control of Assad’s government.
