💭 Oklahoma Army Guard Headed to Horn of Africa

More than 800 Oklahoma Army National Guard members bid farewell to their families before beginning a year-long deployment to the Horn of Africa April 15.

The Citizen-Soldiers are part of Task Force Tomahawk, more than 1,000 Soldiers from multiple units across the Oklahoma Army National Guard’s 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, including two companies from both Nebraska and Indiana.

While overseas, Task Force Tomahawk will provide security support at five installations across multiple East African countries. In addition to conventional security operations, the Task Force will staff the East African Response Force.

During the farewell ceremony, Lt. Col. Brent Weece, Task Force Tomahawk commander, charged his Soldiers with remembering the support of family and friends when times are hard overseas.

“When we’re thousands of miles from Oklahoma, when you’re tired, when you’re hot, when you miss home and you think no one cares, remember this arena, remember all the people here today,” Weece said. “Remember the amazing support we have from our family and friends and our state. We couldn’t have greater support than we do from the people here today and from the state of Oklahoma.”

Thousands of family members attended the deployment ceremony, including one very high-profile father saying goodbye to his son.

Moment mob armed with makeshift weapons brawl on street after protest was held near Eritrean Embassy in north London – with police making a ‘number’ of arrests

• Footage shows a riot which broke out on streets of north London this afternoon
• The disorder happened near the Eritrean Embassy in Islington, with flags waved
• A large crowd was spotted, with several men fighting with makeshift weapons
• African specialist Martin Plaut earlier advertised a protest outside the embassy

Several members of the group are shown fighting — while carrying poles and other makeshift weapons.

Crowds could be heard shouting, as buses were halted in the street by their presence.

The Met Police said that the incident began as a peaceful protest, before a separate ‘large group’ approached.

This then escalated into a ‘confrontation’, with people shouting at officers in the street, before numerous people were arrested.

Some people in the crowd held their hands in the air, crossing them at the wrist, shouting ‘stop’.

Other protesters sat in the street, blocking traffic from moving past.

In video footage from the scene, a line of police officers could be seen standing together close to the crowd.

Later on, the protesters stood close to the police line, shouting and raising their hands in the air again, with the group pushing against officers.

As the pushing continued and became stronger, the police line broke, with officers moving the protesters back.

As officers attempted to clear the street so that traffic could pass through safely, the group continued to chant and shout.

The disorder is close to the Eritrean Embassy, with at least one person in the crowd spotted waving an Eritrean flag.

Officers were then seen trying to disperse the group, shouting ‘get back’, with some pushing protesters back along the street.

Former BBC journalist and African specialist Martin Plaut earlier advertised a protest outside the Eritrean Embassy, condemning Eritrea’s occupation of the Tigray region in the north of the country.

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement: ‘Police were called at around 13:35hrs on Sunday, 4, September to reports of a disturbance in the vicinity of the Eritrean embassy in White Lion Street, Islington.

‘A peaceful demonstration had been taking place at the location when a large group approached those demonstrating.

‘A number of people then became involved in a confrontation. Officers attended and separated those involved. A police presence remains on scene and officers continue to monitor the situation.

‘A number of arrests have been made for wilful obstruction of the highway and public order offences. There have been no reports of any serious injuries.

💭 Turkish embassy in Ethiopia forced to move to Kenya over insecurity

Turkey’s embassy in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa has been moved to neighboring Kenya due to threats after the deployment of Turkish drones by the Abiy Ahmed regime to suppress the Tigray rebellion, the T24 news website reported.

Although the Turkish government hadn’t made an official statement regarding the sale of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to the Ethiopian government, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had visited the country and met with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan twice in the past six months, adding to the widespread belief that drones bought from Turkey, in addition to Iran and the United Arab Emirates, had changed the course of the civil war in Ethiopia, journalist Barçın Yinanç wrote in an article on the T24 news website on Monday.

“Turkey’s embassy in Addis Ababa cannot operate from the capital due to threats it has received. The ambassador and several embassy staff are serving from [neighboring] Kenya. There was no statement from the [Turkish] Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the matter,” the journalist said.

The conflict that has been going on for over a year in Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous country and a linchpin of regional security, has left thousands dead, forced more than 2 million people from their homes and pushed parts of the country into famine.

Forces under Abiy Ahmed, the Ethiopian military, ethnic militias, and troops from neighboring Eritrea, are fighting to oust the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, or T.P.L.F., from its stronghold in the northern region of Tigray.

In early November, the government teetered when fighters from Tigray surged south toward Addis Ababa, forcing the prime minister to declare a state of emergency. Foreigners fled the country and the government detained thousands of civilians from the Tigrayan ethnic group.

But weeks later Abiy pulled off a stunning military reversal, halting the rebel march less than 100 miles from the capital, then forcing them to retreat hundreds of miles to their mountainous stronghold in Tigray.

He succeeded partly by mobilizing ordinary citizens to take up arms to block the Tigrayan advance. However, his fortunes were greatly boosted by a fleet of armed drones, recently imported from the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Iran, that pummeled the Tigrayan forces, according to a report by The New York Times last week.

A drone strike on a flour mill in May Tsebri, a town in the northwest of Ethiopia (Tigray region), reportedly killed 17 people on Monday January 10 and injured dozens more, according to eyewitnesses.

The January 10 bombings came just days after a similar attack on a camp for displaced persons in Dedebit killed 59 and injured nearly 140 on Friday January 7.
