💭 The government of Ukraine has ordered that all Ukrainian Orthodox monks must leave the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra 1,000-year-old Orthodox Christian monastery, one of the most preeminent monasteries in Eastern Orthodox Christianity and the most prominent monastery in Ukraine, because they are under the Moscow Patriarchate and not under the Kiev Patriarchate. Oleksandr Tkachenko, Ukraine’s Minister of Culture and Information Policy, declared:

“The agreement for the free use of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra by the UOC will be terminated on 29 March 2023. This applies to all Lavra premises rented by the UOC.

Today, on 10 March 2023, the National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Reserve gave notice to the UOC’s Holy Dormition Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra (the men’s monastery) to terminate the agreement on the free use of religious buildings and other state property.

This notice is based on the conclusions of the Interagency Working Group, which, in the course of its work, found that the monastery had violated the terms of the agreement on the use of state property. A number of violations of the terms of use of state property have been established. The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy has set out its position in a letter.”

The monks have refused to leave, arguing that there are no legal grounds for the demand to leave the monastery. The order goes back to a commission established under President Vladimir Zelensky’s decree.

Ukrainian intelligence considers priests under the Moscow Patriarchate to be enemy agents. In 2022, Ukrainian intelligence opened 52 criminal cases involving 55 clergymen of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, including 14 bishops. Not only has the Ukrainian government imposed sanctions on the Russian Orthodox Church, but has also banned 200 Russian Orthodox clerics from entering Ukraine. The head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Kliment, stated that the demand to leave the monastery “does not mean anything” and amounts to “opinions of the director of the preserve, not supported by legal arguments.” “How can we leave?” said the metropolitan. “We are responsible for this heritage that we have guarded for decades. And now we must leave it to its destroyers?” The Zelensky regime has repeatedly accused the clergy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (under the Moscow patriarchate) of being “Russian sympathizers”. The Ukrainian government rather supports the “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” (OCU) – a non-canonical organization that was founded under the government of President Pyotr Poroshenko after the Maidan revolution in 2014.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova expressed her disdain over the persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox, saying: “Has the State Department heard about this?” she said. “This time they won’t manage to ‘not see’ the persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.”

The monastery was closed in Soviet times, but back in Soviet times it was returned to the use of the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1988, the work of the monastery and the Theological Seminary was resumed: the authorities transferred ground structures and distant caves to the Church, and in 1990, the nearby caves. In 1990, UNESCO added the Kiev Pechersk Lavra to the List of World Heritage Sites. From 1994 to this day, the abbot of the Lavra is Metropolitan Pavel (Lebed).

Pressure on the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the largest in the country, to which millions of believers identify themselves, began in the 1990s from nationalists and schismatics. By 2018, this turned into a large-scale state campaign, the authorities created a “rival” to the UOC, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), from schismatic organizations.

At the same time, an media campaign began against the UOC, with mass raids of its churches, their “voluntary re-registration” to the OCU with the approval of the authorities, attacks by nationalists and schismatics on the clergy and believers with impunity.

In 2022, the Ukrainian authorities organized the largest wave of persecution of the UOC in the recent history of the country. Referring to its connection with Russia, local authorities in different regions of Ukraine decided to ban the activities of the UOC, and a bill on its actual ban in Ukraine was submitted to the country’s parliament. State sanctions have been imposed on some representatives of UOC clergy. The Security Service of Ukraine began to open criminal cases against UOC bishops priests and conduct searches in churches and monasteries to find “evidence of anti-Ukrainian activities.”

This news story sounds like something out of Calles’s Mexico or Bolshevik Russia, wherein the state looked for reasons to persecute the Church. This hatred in Ukraine has been going on for decades. In 2008, Iryna Farion, another Ukrainian nationalist leader, said: “I think that the structure that calls itself a Moscow Patriarchate has nothing to do with Christianity. It is one of the greatest threats for independent and self-sustained development of Ukraine. As long as this institution occupies the Kyiv Pecherska Lavra [an ancient monastery in Ukraine], a Ukrainian will be enslaved.”

In July of 2010, when Patriarch Kirill visited Ukraine, Ukrainian nationalists met him with signs that said, “Down with Moscow Colonizer Priest,” “Ukrainian Orthodox Church against Moscow Heresy,” and “Moscow Patriarchate — Spiritual Occupant”. On May of 2012, around thirty Ukrainian nationalists attacked a church in the Dnieper part of Kiev. They vandalized Christian symbols, destroyed the altar, damaged the Crucifix and icons and threatened the clergy. In the name of the nation, they became antichrist. In April of 2013, three hundred Ukrainian nationalists, carrying the flags of the Svoboda party, tried to storm a church in Novo-Arkhangelsk. They broke the gates and the doors of the church and tried to hit the clergy who were in the courtyard of the church (see Byshok & Kochetkov, Neo-Nazis & Euromaidan, pp. 71-72)

With such religious tension and jingoism, the country is like a room full of gasoline; all it takes is for one to throw in the lighted match of nationalist provocation and the place will implode. I fear that a massacre of Orthodox Christians — something like what happened to Poles in Wolyn — will take place.

Religious nationalism is the desire of certain elements within NATO. When Turkey and the United States supposedly negotiated for the release of pastor Andrew Brunson, part of the deal was that Turkey would pressure the Orthodox church in Istanbul (the center for Eastern Orthodox Christianity) to make a Ukrainian Orthodox Church that would be independent of the Moscow Patriarchate. According to a report from Modern Diplomacy:

One of Washington’s main conditions for lifting the sanctions is Brunson’s release. However, there is another one – the autocephaly for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), the author states.

In April, Kyiv, which strives to break away from the Russian Orthodox Church and create an independent Ukrainian Church, addressed the Ecumenical Patriarchate with an appeal to grant the autocephaly. According to Patriarch Bartholomew, who delivered a speech after the recent Sunday service, the still-ongoing official process is to yield the results shortly.

The previous week, in an interview to BBC Ukraine, the leader of Crimean Tatars and a member of the Ukrainian Parliament Mustafa Dzhemilev said that President Erdogan had confirmed his support in the process of granting autocephaly to the Ukrainian Church. “I told him that today Moscow is like a Mecca for the Orthodox but after the UOC becomes independent Istanbul will take the place of Moscow,” Dzhemilev noticed. According to him, when he and Ukrainian president Poroshenko met with Erdogan on July 12, the Turkish leader assured that he would do “everything possible” for the Ukrainian autocephaly and said that he understood the importance of this issue for the Crimean Tatars.

Religious nationalism and tensions in Ukraine are very real. I am afraid that the Ukrainian nationalist lunatics will one day commit a horrendous massacre (at the level of Wolyn) to the Orthodox Christians simply because they are under the Moscow Church.

Kiev Pechersk Lavra also known as the Kiev Monastery of the Caves, is a historic Eastern Orthodox Christian monastery which gave its name to one of the city districts where it is located in Kyiv.

Since its foundation as the cave monastery in 1051, the Lavra has been a preeminent center of Eastern Orthodox Christianity in Eastern Europe. Together with the Saint Sophia Cathedral, it is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monastery complex is considered a separate national historic-cultural preserve (sanctuary), the national status to which was granted on 13 March 1996. The Lavra is not only located in another part of the city but is part of a different national sanctuary than Saint Sophia Cathedral. While being a cultural attraction, the monastery is once again active, with over 100 monks in residence. It was named one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine on 21 August 2007, based on voting by experts and the internet community.

Currently, the jurisdiction over the site is divided between the state museum, National Kyiv-Pechersk Historic-Cultural Preserve, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) as the site of the chief monastery of that Church and the residence of its leader, Onufrius, Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine.

Journalist and Pulitzer Prize winner Seymour Hersh has accused the U.S. Navy on Wednesday of being behind the explosions recorded in the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines in September 2022.

Hersh has explained on his website that those responsible for the alleged sabotage are U.S. Navy divers, who would have placed explosives during NATO’s’ Baltops 22 ‘maneuvers.

Specialized U.S. Navy diving teams carried out the bombing attack against the underwater Nord Stream pipelines which supply Russian gas to western Europe during a top secret mission overseen by President Joe Biden, a bombshell report claims.

Divers planted C4 explosives on three Nord Stream pipelines in June 2022 which were detonated three months later using a sonar buoy which broadcast a signal that triggered the bombs, according to the report.

The attack was carried out in response to Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and designed to force Germany and other European nations to end their reliance on Russian gas, it is claimed. The move would also disrupt Moscow’s income from gas sales – which have contributed billions of dollars to its war effort.

The sensational report by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh, published to his Substack, cites a source ‘with direct knowledge of the operational planning’ behind the alleged plot. The White House and the CIA flatly rejected the report on Wednesday, branding it ‘complete fiction’.

Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines were sabotaged by bomb blasts on September 26 2022 in an attack that, ostensibly, continues to baffle investigators. While analysts say the immediate impact of the attack was ‘limited’ – because the pipelines were not fully operational – the geopolitical consequences were huge.

I had previously believed that incompetence and concurrent Islamic ascendancy (secondary to social media and the fall of the prior bipolar world which kept modern Islam in check) was the reason that Islamic jihad continued to make steady advances, and the West acted out a nonstop Comedy of Errors and could make no progress impeding the advance of Jihad. op-rated Fox News host Tucker Carlson, during his Tuesday monologue, made no bones about his suspicions that the Biden regime’s deep state was behind the move to sabotage a pair of Russian pipelines that pump natural gas to the European continent.

Carlson opened his program by mentioning that a major new environmental “catastrophe” was unfolding after the Nordstream pipelines began leaking huge amounts of natural gas into the air from an undersea break that officials said was caused by explosions. Carlson said that such an act of sabotage if in fact, that’s what happened, would almost certainly have to have been sanctioned by the U.S. government.

“Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 are pouring millions of cubic meters of natural gas into the Baltic Sea,” Carlson began, noting the environmental damage the leak was likely to cause.

The host then noted that due to the nature of the pipeline breaks, they could not have happened naturally and said that European officials quickly declared it an act of sabotage. He also said it is highly doubtful that Russian President Vladimir Putin would have approved of taking out his own pipelines.

“Natural gas is comprised of up to 90% methane. Methane, as Joe Biden has often told you, is the key driver of global warming, which is, of course, an existential threat to humanity and the planet,” he added. “So if you’re worried about climate change, what just happened to the Nord Stream pipelines is as close to the apocalypse as we have ever come. So, the question is, how did this happen? And it turns out it was not an accident.”

“Natural gas pipelines are the main source of your power and your wealth and, most critically, your leverage over other countries. Europe needs your energy now more than ever with winter approaching. If you can’t deliver that energy, then countries like Germany have no need to pay attention to what you want,” he said. “You’re in the middle of a war, an all-hands-on-deck war, so you need all the leverage you can get. Under these circumstances, there is no chance you would blow up Nord Stream 1 or 2.”

At that, Carlson played a clip of President Biden saying that he would “bring an end to” the Nordstream 2 pipeline.

“This is the president who has declared climate change the most pressing emergency in the history of the world. This is the man who lectures you about using a woodstove or driving an SUV because of its emissions,” the host continued. “This is the guy who spent billions trying to mitigate cow flatulence because methane. Would that guy really blow up a methane pipeline in the middle of the Baltic Sea? It was hard to imagine.”

“That would be an unimaginably reckless act. That would be the kind of thing you would do if you wanted to start a nuclear war. It would be insane. And yet in retrospect, it’s obvious they were thinking about this because Joe Biden wasn’t the only person to suggest it,” Carlson said before adding that neocon Victoria Nuland, the Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs, also pledged that the U.S. would stop the pipeline.

“So once again, did the Biden administration really do this? It’s hard to believe,” Carlson said before mentioning the curious timing of a new pipeline under construction that would cut out the need for Europe to import Russian energy supplies.

If the Biden administration “did this, this will be one of the craziest, most destructive things any American administration has ever done. But it would also be totally consistent with what they do. What do they do?” Carlson said. “They destroy. These people built nothing, not one thing. Instead, they tear down and they desecrate from historic statues to the Constitution to energy infrastructure and no one in Congress is trying to stop any of it.”

“What would be the effect of this? Every action has a reaction, equal and opposite. Blow up the Nord Stream pipelines? Okay, we’ve entered a new phase, one in which the United States is directly at war with the largest nuclear power in the world,” he added.

‘Finish us Off’: Ethiopia’s Qemant Minority Ethnic Group Say Targeted in Armed Campaign

Amare says he had two options.

“It was either leave home or be killed,” he told Al Jazeera from the safety of a United Nations-run refugee camp in the Basinga village in Sudan’s Gadarif state bordering Ethiopia.

The 20-year-old student, a member of Ethiopia’s Qemant minority ethnic group, fled to the camp to escape what he says was a raid by Ethiopian soldiers on Shinfa, a town in Ethiopia’s Amhara region some 10km (six miles) from the Sudanese border, on June 13.

“They shot at anyone who moved, including the elderly. I’m lucky to be alive,” he said in a phone interview from the camp. “They want to cleanse the Amhara region of the Qemant,” he added. “They’re trying to finish us off.”

Amare is among a growing number of Qemant to level such accusations against Ethiopian troops and allied militias affiliated with the country’s Amhara regional government.

Government officials maintain that civilians are not being targeted by their offensive in Amhara, which they say is linked to the country’s 11-month war that initially pitted forces loyal to the TPLF (Tigray People’s Liberation Front) – the governing party of nearby Tigray region – against the national armies of Ethiopia and neighbouring Eritrea. The fighting in Tigray has killed thousands, displaced millions and has led to a humanitarian crisis that has left hundreds of thousands facing famine-like conditions. In June, Tigrayan forces launched a counterattack that saw them retake much of their region and expand fighting into the neighbouring Amhara and Afar regions.

But in the fog of the war, military operations and mob violence in disputed territories in the northwest of the Amhara region have also led to the displacement of thousands of ethnic Qemant civilians from their homes.

The Qemant live in the Amhara region and are physically and linguistically indistinguishable from the ethnic Amhara, Ethiopia’s second-largest ethnic group who account for nearly a quarter of Ethiopia’s 112 million people.

The Qemant have long complained of marginalisation, struggling even for recognition – in 2007, they were completely omitted from Ethiopia’s census, and today there are no confirmed population figures for the Qemant, who are believed to number many more than the 172,000 last counted in 1994. Meanwhile, requests for regional autonomy by Qemant rights groups have had them at odds with the ethnic Amhara with whom they share a region.

At a news conference in April, the former Amhara regional President Agegnehu Teshager, whose term ended this week, alleged that Qemant “extremists” had formed militias allied with the Tigrayans, although he did not present evidence to support his claim.

“We are fighting a war against Qemant extremists who trained in Sudan and are armed by the TPLF,” he said. “They have already fired on our forces.”

Refugees in Sudan told Al Jazeera that a number of Qemant youths have taken up arms in response to constant raids on their communities. Al Jazeera could not independently verify this, and there is little to no data on the formal founding of a Qemant force or its capacity.

Ethiopia’s government maintains that its forces are in the area to search for suspected Qemant rebels and secure the country’s border from possible infiltrators from Sudan.

But satellite imagery analysis, witness accounts and photographic evidence gathered by Al Jazeera point instead to the involvement of the Ethiopian military and allied militias in the destruction of Qemant communities. Residents have also accused Ethiopian troops of watching idly as allied militias carry out often macabre killings against civilians.

“They have dragged people from homes and butchered them in the streets,” said a man who fled to Gondar following a raid on his hometown. Requesting anonymity due to fears for his security, he accused members of a local Amhara militia known as the Fano of killing more than a dozen Qemant civilians in this manner during a murderous rampage that took place in the town of Aykel between September 1 and 2.

“They kill, steal what they want and leave. This has been happening for months,” he said on the phone

UK-based non-profit research organisation Vigil Monitor, which has been documenting atrocities across Ethiopia since the breakout of war in November of last year, worked in tandem with Al Jazeera and studied satellite imagery provided by Planet Labs, a private satellite operator, of areas identified by at least a dozen displaced people as having been heavily affected by military operations. The imagery revealed widespread destruction of some 557 civilian structures spanning from May 2021 until the present, largely corroborating witness accounts.

“Over 500 structures have been destroyed deliberately in the Shinfa river area across four settlements,” the organisation said in a written assessment of the imagery. “Affected areas with damage observed in satellite imagery have suffered worsening episodes of violence.”

Vigil Monitor added that different settlements suffered varying degrees and means of violence consistent with time periods and accounts given by witnesses.

“It appears that attacks in the Chilga and Shinfa areas began at least in April,” the organisation said. “We’ve noted significant escalations since then including the mobilisation of Amhara regional forces and the Ethiopian army, the employment of artillery and widespread burning of civilian areas.”

Al Jazeera reached out to Ethiopia’s Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Peace for a response to the allegations but did not receive a response by the time of publication.

New experiments reveal a complex link between crow play and tool use.

Indirect learning

What this suggests, say the researchers in a recent paper for Royal Society Open Science, is that the link between play and tool use is indirect. The two are clearly related, because the birds who played with tools were much better at using those tools in a food-finding task. But there was also huge variability between the birds, suggesting that they were not all getting the same thing out of play.

Importantly, the birds were not using play as a way of honing their skills on tool-using tasks. Write Lambert and her colleagues:

These results support the hypothesis that unrewarded object exploration provides information about object properties or affordances which can then be used to solve problems, but [they] do not speak to other potentially overlapping functions of exploration such as honing manual skills or generating novel behavioral sequences. Given its apparent costliness, it is likely that exploration confers myriad benefits…

New Caledonian crow subjects may apply information generated from their exploration of novel objects to select functional tools in a later problem-solving task; however, we have no evidence that that they engage in strategic exploration to gain information about the functional properties of objects with respect to a problem-solving task.

Playing is a “costly” activity because birds spend a lot of time doing it when they could be getting food, finding shelter, or doing other things to make survival more likely. From an evolutionary perspective, there has to be some benefit to play if it costs so much. But that benefit, as these researchers discovered, is complex and oblique. Crows played with the ropes because it was fun. Getting better at poking food out of a tube was only a secondary effect.

Crows may play simply because it helps them gain generalized problem-solving skills. Of course, that doesn’t entirely explain one of the often-documented habits of crows, which involves goading cats into fights. In the video below, you can see how a crow pokes and pecks at two cats until they fight, then eggs them on.

Similar videos show crows working together to get cats to fight, and tweaking dogs’ tails to make them freak out. In a sense, the crows are treating these unwitting mammals as tools. They’ve learned the exact things that will drive cats and dogs mad (namely, pecking their backs and tails), and seem to enjoy the results.

What, exactly, is the “reward” for doing this? What are the birds learning in a generalized sense that might help them survive in other situations? The answer, as Lambert and her team discovered, is fairly ambiguous. There may not be any specific thing that the birds are learning from these activities. Possibly all they get is momentary amusement at the idea that they can make other animals do things. This might give crows a better understanding of how to manipulate objects and mammals to get food.

But perhaps further research will reveal that “unrewarded object exploration” is its own reward. Especially if it means that a pair of annoying cats gets tricked into smacking each other around.

እነዚህ በአብዛኞቹ አሜሪካውያን ዘንድ የማይታወቁት የእነ ሲ.አይ.ኤ ወኪሎችና “የዩ ኤስ አሜሪካ የሰላም ተቋም” አባላት ናቸው። አሁን ወቅቱን ጠብቀው ባዘጋጁት በዚህ ውይይት ላይ “እኛ” እያሉ (በተረጋጋ መልክ መወያየታቸው እንዳያታልለን) በቀጥታም ሆነ በተዘዋዋሪ መልክ ካስተላለፉልን (በተለይ “የእኛ” ለሚሏቸው አንዳንድ የዲያስፐራ ከሃዲዎች) መልዕክቶች መካከል የሜከተሉትን ፲ ነገሮች ማየት ችያለሁ፦

፩ኛ. የኢትዮጵያ እጣ ፈንታ በእኛ በጡረተኞቹ አሜሪካውያን እጅ ነው፤ የእኛን ምክር/ትዕዛዝ መቀበል አለባችሁ

፪ኛ. የዶ/ር አህመድን መንግስት እኛ ነን ያስቀመጥነው፤ አሁን የምንፈልገውን እየሠራልን ነው

፫ኛ. ዶ/ር አህመድን ከኤርትራው ፕሬዚደንት ኢሳያስ አፈወርቂ ጋር እንዲገናኝ አዘዝነው፤ ከዚያም ለኢትዮጵያ ምንም ነገር እስከማያገኝ ድረስ ተጫወትንበት

፬ኛ. ኢትዮጵያ ከብሔር ፌደራሊዝም ውጭ ሌላ አማራጭ የላትም፤ ክልሎቹ በዚህ መልክ መቀጠል አለባቸው፤ አሊያ እናበጣብጣችኋለን

፭ኛ. የሕዝብ ቆጠራውንና ምርጫውን በፍጥነት ማካሄድ አለባችው

፮ኛ. የሕዝባችሁን ቁጥር መቀነስ አለባችሁ፤ በተለይ የተዋሕዶ ክርስቲያኑን

፯ኛ. የኢትዮጵያ ቴሌኮምን፣ ንግድ ባንክን እና አየር መንገድን በጨረታ መሸጥ አለባቸው፥ ጤፋችሁንም ገና እንነጥቃችኋለን

፰ኛ. ከእኛ ጋር ብቻ እንጂ ከቻይና ጋር የጠበቀ ግኑኝነት ሊኖራችሁ አይገባም

፱ኛ. ዶላርና ዶናት የምንሰጣችሁ ዲያስፐራ ከእኛ ጋር ተባበሩ፡ አሊያ…
