There Can Be No Peace in Ethiopia Without Justice and Accountability

On November 2, 2022, the Ethiopian Government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) signed a peace deal towards ending the brutal two year war in Ethiopia. On November 12, 2022, they further signed an agreement laying out the roadmap for implementation of the peace deal. The roadmap includes steps to facilitate unhindered humanitarian access, provide security to aid workers, and ensure the protection of civilians, among others. It does not include any provisions to ensure justice and accountability.

The two years of war have seen atrocity crimes perpetrated by all actors to the conflict and humanitarian crisis reaching new levels, among others around 5.2 million in need of humanitarian assistance in Tigray, including 3.8 million who need healthcare. Understandably, the agreement does not change the fact that atrocity crimes have been perpetrated. They must be investigated and those responsible brought to justice. Among these crimes is conflict related sexual violence (CRSV).

In early November 2022, the Dr. Denis Mukwege Foundation published their new report “Understanding Conflict Related Sexual Violence in Ethiopia”, produced in cooperation with the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Institute for Public Health at Washington University. The report found that “data suggest that Ethiopian and allied forces committed CRSV on a widespread and systemic basis in order to eliminate and/or forcibly displace the ethnic Tigrayan population.”

The report cites numerous testimonies of survivors of CRSV in the region.

Among them, 27-year-old woman who was raped in front of her children by a half-dozen Fano militiamen carrying out neighborhood searches targeting Tigrayans testified: “Two of them raped me and then I lost consciousness and don’t know how many more raped me, if all six [did], or not. They said: ‘You Tigrayans should disappear from the land west of Tekeze! You are evil and we are purifying your blood.’”

30-year-old survivor testified that “four men raped me. They insulted me and they urinated on my head. They said: ‘You and your race are a foul, toilet-smelling race and should not be in our land.’”

28-year-old mother of two, was apprehended by ten Amhara militia members and raped, as she was trying to flee to Sudan, testified that “they said: ‘If you were male we would kill you, but girls can make Amhara babies.’”

The report further cited a testimony of a survivor who recalled that “Eritrean soldiers saying while raping her that they were ordered ‘to come after the women’, while another woman recall[ed] Eritrean soldiers saying that their actions were revenge against Tigray.”

The report further identified that the use of CRSV in Ethiopia is widespread and perpetrated by all actors to the conflict, and affect many ethnic groups. The report indicates that “multiple sources suggesting that the [Eritrean Defense Forces] EDF perpetrated CRSV because they were ordered to and as a means of ethnically motivated revenge. (…) CRSV by the TPLF appears to have been ethnically motivated revenge in response to atrocities committed by federal forces and their allies in Tigray.”

Furthermore, the report indicated that Eritrean refugees have been targeted by multiple actors to the conflict, including by the EDF, by Amhara forces and by Tigrayan forces.

The response to the atrocities in Ethiopia, and specially to CRSV, is yet to follow. This also applies to healthcare services for survivors of CRSV which are still lacking.

As we watch some progress with the peace agreement, the issue of justice and accountability cannot be delayed or left unaddressed. Lasting peace cannot be achieved if the atrocities in Ethiopia enjoy impunity and survivors are left without a voice.

President Joe Biden Confuses Cambodia with Colombia | ፕሬዝዳንት ጆ ባይደን ካምቦዲያን ከኮሎምቢያ ጋር ግራ አጋቧት

💭 Biden Mixes Up His Countries And Continents Again on Trip to Regional Summit

Colombia is apparently “top of mind” for President Joe Biden, who seemed to confuse the South America nation with Cambodia while traveling to Phnom Penh for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit and again Saturday while thanking Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen for his leadership as chair.

“Now that we’re back together here in Cambodia, I look forward to building even stronger progress than we’ve already made, and I want to thank the Prime Minister of Colombia for his leadership as ASEAN chair and for hosting all of us,” Biden declared as he opened the summit, according to Reuters.

Biden similarly referred to Cambodia as the South American nation when talking with reporters before departing for the ASEAN summit announcing that he was “heading over to Colombia” before correcting himself, reported Fox News.

Geographic gaffes aren’t just reserved for Joe Biden, though. Vice President Kamala Harris made headlines in September when she stated that the United States had a “strong and enduring alliance” with the Republic of North Korea.

Biden’s latest gaffe is just one in a long series of such mistakes he has made as president, including an awkward moment in September when he tried to acknowledge deceased Republican Indiana Rep. Jackie Walorski at a White House conference.

The New York Times reported that 64 percent of Americans believed that Joe Biden was showing, through these public appearance gaffes, that he was “too old to be president.” Despite this, Biden who will turn 80 this month, stated Wednesday that he intends to run for re-election in 2024, according to Reuters.

Hypocrisy and Elitism’ – 400 Private Jets Land in Egypt for UN Climate Conference

Posted by addisethiopia / አዲስ ኢትዮጵያ on November 13, 2022

💭 With tens of thousands of elites descending upon the Red Sea resort town of Sharm El Sheikh for the UN COP27 climate conference, some 400 private jets have been witnessed landing in the Egyptian city.

The COP27 climate change summit, which was too hypocritical for even Greta Thunberg to attend, has been beset with accusations of elitism and double standards.

This was further confirmed on Friday, when the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency reported that over 400 private jets have landed in the Egyptian coastal city over the past few days while the conference is being held.

Speaking on condition of anonymity to the news agency, a source close to local aviation authorities said: “More than 400 private jets landed in the past few days in Egypt,”

“There was a meeting ahead of COP27, and officials were expecting those jets and made some arrangements in Sharm el-Sheikh airport to welcome those planes.”

The rank hypocrisy from globalist elites is not out of character, with a similar number of private jets flying to last year’s COP26 conference in Glasgow, with even then-Prince Charles and Boris Johnson opting to fly private despite living in the same country, with rail networks available.

Around 33,000 people registered to attend the meeting in Egypt — which could have been done largely on Zoom, if reducing carbon emissions was that important.

Meanwhile, the UN summit has also come under criticism for offering attendees gourmet meals consisting of meat, fish, and dairy products, as many in attendance — including the UN, itself — have advocated for the regular public to start eating more ‘sustainable’ food sources, such as insect-derived proteins.

German reporters have also claimed that the compound hosting the summit has been blasting the air conditioning so cold that people were bundling up with scarves and other winter accoutrements.

All this has seen the conference lose credibility with the public. Leading figures at the conference, such as Britain’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and former U.S. Vice President Al Gore called for increasingly radical responses to the alleged climate crisis, including providing climate reparations.

Yet, according to Climate Action Against Disinformation, which tracks supposed disinformation on social media, the main themes in the public’s perception of the meeting were “hypocrisy and elitism”.

Madogna Branded ‘Embarrassing’ & ‘Disgusting’ after Licking Water out of Dog Bowl

Posted by addisethiopia / አዲስ ኢትዮጵያ on November 13, 2022

😈 The Material Girl has raised eyebrows, and concerns, about recent social media posts that have gone from bizarre to disturbing.

The singer, who previously said she thought about blowing up the White House while President Trump was still inside, looks unrecognizable in recent posts.

The 64-year-old posted topless photos of herself with tiny emojis to cover up her nipples and the Material Girl is looking a little weathered.Desperate for attention and, perhaps relevance, Madonna’s latest weird foray onto social media platforms is an Instagram post showing a carousel of photos which get odder and odder.
