ግን በህብረት ጸጥ፣ ጭጭ ብለዋል፤ ጽንፈኛ ድርጊቱን ይደግፉታልን?

የሚገርም ነው፤ በትናንትናው የአቡነ አረጋዊ ዕለት ጸሎት የማደርስበት ቤተ ክርስቲያን ውስጥ አንዲት አረጋዊት ፖላንዳዊት ወደኔ ቀርባ በመምጣት የቦታ አድራሻ ከጠየቀችኝ በኋላ ለአንድ ሰዓት ያህል ሳዋራት ነበር። ፖላንዶች ለጽዮን እመቤታችን ከፍተኛ ፍቅር አላቸው። ሆላንድ እና ፖላንድ እንዳይምታታብንና አምና ላይ ይህን ቪዲዮና ጽሑፍ አቅርቤ ነበር፦

እ.አ.አ በ1656 ዓ.ም በፖላንድ ላይ ተቃጥቶ የነበረውን የስዊድኖች የጥቃት ወረራ በጥቁሯ ማርያም እርዳታ ሲከሽፍ የፖላንድ ንጉሥ ካዚሚሬስ ጥቁሯን እመቤታችንን የፖላንድ ንግሥት እንድትሆን ወሰነ። ብልሕ ንጉሥ!

እ.አ.አ በ1944 ዓ.ም በሁለተኛው የዓለም ጦርነት ክፉኛ የደቀቁት (1/5ኛው ሕዝቧ፤ 6ሚሊየን ፕላንዳውያን አልቀዋል ) ፖላንዳውያኑ የጥቁሯን/ኢትዮጵያውያን እመቤታችንን ስዕል ተሸክመው እስከ ኔዘርላንድስ/ሆላንድ ድርሰ ዘልቀው በመግባት ቪዲዮው ላይ የምትታየውን የብሬዳ ከተማን ነፃ ለማውጣት በቅተዋል። ድንቅ ተዓምር!

ጥቁሯ ማርያም (Black Madonna of Czestochowa) እ.አ.አ በ1944 ዓ.ም የኔዘርላንድሷን(ሆላንድ) ከተማ ብሬዳን ከናዚዎች ነፃ ላወጧት የፖላንድ ወታደሮች በ1954 ዓ.ም የተሠራ መታሰቢያ ላይ ሰሞኑን በመላው ዓለም በመካሄድ ካለው ከፀረ-ዘረኝነት እንቅስቃሴ ጋር በተያያዘ ያልታወቁ ሰዎች “BLM“ ( Black Lives Matter – BLM “የጥቁርም ሕይወት ይገባዋል”) በሚል ትልቅ ጽሑፍ ለማበላሸት ደፍረዋል። ትልቅ ቅሌት!

ለእናታችን ትልቅ ፍቅር ያላቸው ፖላንዳውያን የሚያሳዩት የእመቤታችን ቅዱስ ሥዕል ነጭ ሳይሆን እንዲህ ይመስላል። የእናት እና ልጇ ውበት ልብን ያሞቃል!

ለመሆኑ የጥቁሯ ማርያም ስዕልን የሚቃወም የጥቁሮች እንቅስቃሴ አለ እንዴ? ይህን ጽንፈኛ ተግባር ሊፈጸም የሚችለውስ በማን ይሆን? በኮሙኒስቶች? በፌሚኒስቶች? በግብረ–ሰዶማውያን? በመሀመዳውያን?። ሁሉም የክርስቶስ ተቃዋሚዎች ናቸውን አያደርጉትም አይባሉም።

እንቅስቃሴው ቀስ በቀስ በዘረኞች፣ በኮሙኒስቶች፣ በግብረ-ሰዶማውያን እና በአህዛብ እይተጠለፈ ነው። የጥቁር ሕዝቦች ለነፃነትና ህይወት የሚያደርጉትን ትግል ሁሌ የሚጠልፉት እነዚህ ቡድኖች ናቸው። ለዚህ ነው ጥቁሮች ተገቢውን የነፃነት ዒላማ ከመምታት መንገድ ላይ የሚቀሩት። በሃገራችንም ተመሳሳይ ክስተት ይታያል፤ የኢትዮጵያ ብሔርተኛውን አጀንዳ ዘውገኞቹ ኦሮሞዎችና አህዛብ በሁሉም መስክ ጠልፈው እየወሰዱት ነው።

አሁን አጋጣሚውን በመጠቀም ግራኞች፣ ኮሙኒስቶች፣ ፌሚንስቶች እና ሰዶማውያን ከመሀመድ አርበኞች ጋር በማበር በዓብያተ ክርስቲያናት ላይ በመላው አውሮፓ እና አሜሪካ ጥቃት በመፈጸም ላይ ናቸው። አጋንንት የተለቀቁበት ዘመን ላይ ነንና ግድ የለም እራሳቸውን እንዲህ ያጋልጡ፣ ይታዩን፤ ጊዚያቸው በጣም አጭር ነው!

ለማንኛውም እንደ ፖላንድ፣ ሩሲያ፣ ሩማኒያ፣ ፈረንሳይ፣ ስፔይን ወዘተ ላሉ አውሮፓውያን ሃገራት እኛ ኢትዮጵያውያን በድንቁርናችን ነጭ የቆዳ ቀለም እና ሰማያዊ ዓይኖች እያለበስን ያመጣናት ጥቁሯ/ ኢትዮጵያዊቷ ቅድስት ማርያም በታሪካቸው በጣም ብዙ የሆኑ ተዓምራትንና ድሎችን አሳይታቸዋለች።

በተለይ በምስራቅ አውሮፓ በኮሙኒዝም እና ኦቶማን ቱርክ ዘመን አስከፊ ልምዱ ላላቸው ለምስራቅ አውሮፓውያን በጥቁሯ/ኢትዮጵያዊቷ ቅድስት ማርያም ጉዳይ ምንም ድርድር የለም። በዘመነ ኮሮና በእነዚህ አገራት ከተሞች ጎዳናዎች ላይ በእጣን ታጅበው እንዲወጡ የተደረጉት የእናታችን የጥቁሯ ማርያም ስዕላት ናቸው። (በሌላ ቪዲዮ አቀርበዋለሁ)

ዝነኛው የፖላንድ ጥቁሯ ማርያም (Black Madonna of Czestochowa) ቅዱስ ሥዕል

ሥዕል = ጽሑፍ

አስገራሚ የሆነው የቼስቶኮቫ ጥቁር ቅድስት ድንግል ማርያም አይከን/ሥዕል/ጽሑፍ ቅዱስ ሐዋርያው እና ወንጌላዊ ሉቃስ ከሣላቸው/ከጻፋቸው ሰባ ቅዱሳት ሥዕላት/ጽሑፎች መካከል አንዱ እንደሆነ ይታመናል።

ሮማውያን በ 66 ዓ.ም. ከተማዋን ድል ባደረጉበት ጊዜ ምስሉ ከኢየሩሳሌም ተወስዶ ነበር። እናም ፔላ አቅራቢያ ባለ ዋሻ ውስጥ ተደብቆ ነበር። ስዕሉ ለቅድስት ሔለን (እ.ኤ.አ. ግንቦት 21/ 326 ዓ.ም) ቅድስት አገር ስትጎበኝ ተሰጣት፤ ከዚያም ቅድስት ሔለን ወደ ቁስጥንጥንያ አመጣችው።

ይህ ተዓምረኛ ሥዕል ከስምንተኛው ክፍለ ዘመን ጀምሮ በመላው አውሮፓ በኦሮቶዶክሳውያን እና ካቶሊኮች ዘንድ ብዙ ተዓምራትን ካሳየ በኋላ ከአስራ አራተኛው ክፍለዘመን ጀምሮ ያስና ጎራ/ ቺስታኮቫ በተባለው የፖላንድ አውራጃ ይገኛል። ድንቅ ተዓምራት የሚታዩበት ይህ ቦታ በብዙ ጎብኞዎች ይዘወተራል። አረመኔው አዶልፍ ሂትለር ያስና ጎራን/ ቺስታኮቫን ለጎብኝዎች ዝግ እንዲሆን አድርጎ ነበር።

እኛስ ይህን እያየን እመቤታችንን አላግባብ ፈረንጅ ስናደርጋት ሊያሳስበንና ሊያሳፍረን አይገባምን?

ሮማውያኑ “እየሱሳውያን”፤ የጌታችን እና ቅዱሳኑ መልአክቱ ስዕላትንና ኃውልቶችን በነጮች ምሳሌ እንደሚስሏቸውና እንደሚሠሯቸው “ጥቁሯን” / ኢትዮጵያዊቷን” ማርያምንም በተንኮል ነጭ አድርገው በመሳል ወደ ኢትዮጵያ መላካቸውን ስንቶቻችን ነን የምናውቀው?

አሁን ኢትዮጵያውያን ወደ ጥንታውያኑ እና እውነተኞቹ የእመቤታችን ስዕላት መመለስ ይኖርብናል። ቤተ ክሕነትና ማሕበራቱ እንዲሁም ግለሰቦች ለጉዳዩ ተገቢውን ትኩረት መስጠት አለባቸው። በዚህ ላይ ቁጥጥር የሚያደርግ አካል መኖር አለበት። ይህ በቸልታ የሚታለፍ ቀላል ነገር እንዳይመስለን። ይህን አስመልክቶ ኢትዮጵያውያን ልሂቃን ብዙ ሥራዎችን መስራት ይጠበቅብናል።

Statement regarding the massacre in front of the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion in Aksum in the Tigray region፡

Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Friday that it was “deeply concerned with the news of the massacre of civilians, which was alleged to have taken place at the end of last year in front of the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion in Aksum, an Ethiopian province of Tigray.

“We strongly condemn the perpetrators of this barbaric crime committed in a place of worship. We expect the Ethiopian authorities to immediately take all possible measures to clarify its circumstances and punish the perpetrators,” the statement reads.

“We call on the parties to the conflict to refrain from violence and respect human rights, to ensure the safety of the civilian population, and to properly protect places of worship and freedom of religion. We appeal for unimpeded access for humanitarian deliveries to the Tigray province,” the MFA stated.

The statement was possibly prompted by reports by British “Church Times” that surfaced about a week ago, revealing that at least 750 people died in a massacre that was carried out in front of the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion in Aksum in the Ethiopian province of Tigray. Reportedly, the people who tried to hide from the assailants in the church belonging to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church were dragged out of the building and shot to death.

Ever since the attack by Tigray People’s Liberation Front aligned security forces on the Northern Command bases and headquarters of the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray Region, the country has been wrapped in internal tensions and the integrity of the nation, a federation of ethnicities in fact, was put to a test. The crisis seems not solved just yet despite Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali’s trumpetting of victory in December, when the capital of the province Mekelle was captured by the ENDF.

As Polish Radio reported, both sides of the conlifct provide information difficult to verify as telephone and internet connections with the region have remained severed since the early days of military operations. Moreover, data acccessibility is closely monitored by the Addis Abeba government. Estimates are that thousands of people died in the conflict and over 100,000 refugees fled to Sudan.

The city of Axum where the massacre took place is located some 50 km from the Eritrean border and used to be a bone of contention for both the country and Ethiopia before current PM Abiy managed to broker long-awaited peace between the countries. The bulk of the city’s population is Tewaheedo Christian and belongs to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The Ethiopian tradition has it that the Arc of Covenant is being guarded at the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion in Axum.

The past Ethiopian-Eritrean rivalry over the city is rooted in the fact that Axum used to be the first capital of an Ethiopian statehood and a place where Ethiopian Emperors used to be crowned. The city was listed by UNESCO in 1980 as a World Heritage site.

ዛሬውኑ መታሰር ያለበት አረመኔው ግራኝ | ትግራይ ውስጥ ንጹሐን የሉም፣ ቢራቡም እሰይ! ኦሮሚያን ግድ አይሰጣትም!

ይህ አውሬ በአክሱም ጽዮን ብቻ ሺህ የሚሆኑ ምዕመናንን በአሰቃቂ ሁኔታ ጨፍጭፎ፣ ስለ ምርጫ ያስባል እንዴ? አለመታደል ሆኖ የወደቀ ደካማ ትውልድ ስላለን እንጂ፤ በየትኛውም ሃገር ይህ ወንጀለኛ ባፋጣኝ ታስሮ ይረሸን ነበር። አሃ “ትግራይን ማስገንጠል ነበር የፈለግነው ተሳክቶልናል፤ ስለዚህ ጭፍጨፋውን ቀጥለን ዘወር እንላለን፤ እኛ “ኦሮሚያ” የተባለች ሌላ ሃገር ስለምንቆረቁር ምንም አንሆንም” ነው ነገሩ። ማናባክ የሰጠህ ኦሮሚያ ነው?! በባቢሎን ዱባይ ቪላ ሰርተሃል አሉ፤ አይይ፤ የትም አታመልጣትም፤ ታድነህ እንደ ሽንኩርት የምትከታተፍበት ጊዜ ሩቅ አይደለም፤ አብቅቷል፤ ተፈርዶብሃል! ቆሻሻ!

ቴዲ ፻/100% ትክክል ነው። ሁሉም የእንጭጩ አውሬ አነጋገር “የትግሬ ንጹሐን የሉም፣ መራብና መገደል ሲያንሳቸው ነው፣ ትግራይ የኦሮሙማ ኢትዮጵያ አካል አይደለችም፣” የሚል የአማርኛ ትርጉም ነው የሚሰጠው። መጨረሻ ላይ ረሃብን አስመልክቶ ባልከው ላይ ላክልበትና “ረሃብ በኢትዮጵያ የለም!” ማለታቸውም “ይራቡ ይገባቸዋል!” ብቻ ሳይሆን ለማለት የፈለጉት፤ “ትግራይ ኢትዮጵያ አይደለችም” ማለታቸውም ነው። ለዚህም እኮ ብዙ የትግራይ ተወላጆች ባሁኑ ሰዓት “ትግራይ ኢትዮጵያ አይደለችም!” የሚለውን እንጭጭ አቋማቸውን እንደ ማስረጃ ወስደው ሊከራከሩበት ነው። ዛሬ ትግራይ ልክ በአሜሪካ እንደተወረረችው ሶማሊያ፣ ኢራቅ ወይም አፍጋኒስታን ናት፣ “የፀረ-ሽብር ዘመቻ እያካሄድን ነው” ሊሉን ነው። ኦሮሙማው የኢትዮ360 “ተንታኝ” ኤርሚያስ ለገሰ ዛሬም ደግሞ ደጋግሞ “ህወሃት በሽብርተኝነት መፈረጅ አለባት” የሚለው ለዚህ ነው። በነገራችን ላይ ከብል ‘ጽ’ግና እና ሌሎች የኦሮሞዎች ፓርቲዎች ጋር ሲነጻጸር ህወሃት ማህበረ ቅዱሳን ነው። ሃውዜን ላይ ሦስት ሽህ ንጹሐን ትግሬ ወገኖቻችንን በተዋጊ የጨፈጨፈው የደርጉ ለገሰ አስፋው ምንም ሳይሆን ከሁለት ዓመታት በፊት ከረባቱን አስሮ በቅድስት ሥላሴ ቤተ ክርስቲያን በክብር ተቀብሯል፣ አውሬው መንግስቱም ሦስት ልጆቹን ለዶክተርነት አብቅቶ በሃራሬ ይንደላቀቃል። ይህ ነው የሚባል ወንጀል ያልሰሩትና ግራኝን ከድህነት አውጥተው ያሳደጉት፣ ያስተማሩትና ስልጣን የሰጡት እነ አቶ ስዩም መስፍን ግን እንደ ጥንቸል ታድነው ከተገደሉ በኋላ ፎቶዎቻቸው የማህበረሰብ ሜዲያ መሳለቂያ እንዲሆን አድርጓል። ታዲያ ማን ማንን በሽበርተኝነት ይፍረድ እያሉን ነው በአህዛብ መንፈስ ሥር የወደቁት ግብዞቹና አቋምና- መርህ-የለሾቹ እነ ኤርሚያስ ለገሰና ሃብታሙ አያሌው? ወይንስ አብያቸውን እንዳይደፉባቸው ስለሰጉ?

አህመድ፣ ሞፈሪያት ሙፍቲ (ሁሉም አህዛብ መሆናቸውን አንርሳ) እርስበርስ የሚቃረኑት ሆን ብለውና በስልት ነው። እነዚህ ወንጀለኞች ይህን ተናገሩ አልተናገሩ በዚህ ሰዓት ኢሬሌቫንት ነው፤ ሁሉም ባፋጣኝ መጠረግ አለባቸው። ቆሻሻው አብዮት አህመድና መንጋው እንጭጭ ቢሆኑ የሚሠሩትን ሥራ፣ የሚያራምዱትን ዕቅድ ሁሉ አንድ በአንድ በማስተገበር ላይ ናቸው። እኛን በይበልጥ ሊያሳስበንና ሊያስቆጣን የሚገባው የአማራዎችና ትግሬዎች ዕቅድ-የለሽ፣ ብስለት የጎደለውና አርቆ አሳቢ ያልሆነ እንጭጭነት ነው።

እስኪ እንመልከተው፤ ኦሮሞዎቹ ከአማራውም፣ ከትግሬውም ከደቡቡም፣ ከጉራጌውም፣ ከኢሳያስም ጋር በግራና በቀኝ አብረው እየሠሩ ነው። ቀንደኛውን ኦሮሙማ ዘንዶ አብዮት አህመድን እንውሰድ፣ ግራኝን ትግሬዎች ቀልበው አሳደጉት፣ ለዘመዶቹ የኢትዮጵያን ግማሽ ግዛት ቆርሰው ሰጡት፣ በደንብ አጠንክረው ካሳደጉት በኋላ፣ ታንኩንም፣ ባንኩንም፣ ተዋጊ አውሮፕላኑንም አስረክበው ወደ ትግራይ ዋሻቸው አንድም ጥይት ሳይተኩሱ ተመለሱ፣ በሁለት ዓመታት ውስጥ ከአቶ ተወልደ ጋር (አውሮፕላኑ ላይ ተንኮል ቢሰራ ከሚል ስጋት) ትግራይን አቋርጦ በመብረር ወደ አስመራ ብዙ ጊዜ ተመላለስ፤ ከዚያም ጡት አጥብተው ያሳደጉትንና ምስጢራቸውን እንደ ክፍት መጽሐፍ ገልጠው ያሳዩትን ትግሬዎችን ሊጨፈጭፋቸው፣ ሊያሳድዳቸውና ሊያስርባቸው ተመልሶ መጣ። ብዙም ሳይቆይ የአማራን መሬት ለሱዳን ሰጣት፤ የትግሬ ነገር ብቻ ሲሆን ከእንቅልፉ የሚነቃው አማራው ያው እስካሁን “ምን አገባኝ!?” ብሎ ጸጥ ብሏል፤ መለስ ዜናዊን ግን ለሃያ ዓመታት “መሬታችንን ለሱዳን ሰጠብን” ብለው ሲጮሁና ዓለምን ሲያደነቁሯት ነበር። ግብዞች! አረመኔው ግራኝ አብዮት አህመድ ለወራሪዎቹ ኦሮሞ ተልዕኮ ሲል በአጥፍቶ ጠፊ መንፈስ እራሱን መስዋዕት በማድረግ የትግራይን ሕዝብ ጨፍጭፎ ለመጨረስ ቆርጦ ተነስቷል፣ ዓለምም ሁሉም ነገር እስከሚገባደድ ድረስ የማስጠንቀቂያ መግለጫ ከማውጣት በቀር ምንም እንደማታደርግ ያውቃል፤ የሸለሙትም ለዚህ ነበር፣ ዛሬ የተደበቀውው ለዚህ ነው።

እኔ የማዝነው ግን ይህ አውሬ ትግራዋያን የሚጨፈጨፈው እሱው፣ ሱዳን ኢትዮጵያን እንድታጠቃ የፈቀደውና ያዘዘው እሱው ታዲያ ትግሬ ወገኖቼ “እኛ ከሱዳን ጎን ነን!” ማለታቸው “ከገዳያችን ከአብዮት አህመድ ጎን ነን” እንደማለት አይሆንባቸውምን? እየተፈጸመው ባለው ግፍና ሰቆቃ ስሜታዊ ቢሆኑ ይገባኛል፤ ግን ሰፋ አድርገውና አርቀው ማሰብ አለባቸው እኮ! ልክ አማራው “በለው ግደለው!” እያለ ከወንጀለኛው የአህዛብ (ሰ) አራዊት ጎን እንደቆመው ትግሬውም ሱዳንን ሲደግፍ ከዚሁ የግራኝ አህዛብ (ሰ) አራዊት ጎን እየቆመ እኮ ነው! ቢጫና ቀዩን የቻይና ባለ አምስት ማዕዘን (ፔንታግራም ) ኮከብ ባንዲራ “ትግራይ! ትግራይ!” እያሉ ሲያውለበልቡም አሁንም የሉሲፈራውያኑን ወኪል ግራኝ አብዮት አህመድን እያጠናከሩትና እያስደሰቱት እኮ ነው። አውሬው የሚፈልገው በተለይ የኢትዮጵያ የጀርባ አጥንት የሆኑት ትግራይ ኢትዮጵያውያን ማንነታቸውንና ምንነታቸውን እንዲክዱና ሰሜናውያኑ አቅመ-ቢስ የአረቦች መጫወቻዎች እንዲሆኑ ማድረግ እኮ ነው! እስኪ ተመልከቱት “የውጭ ኃይል ይግባ! የተባበሩት መንግስታት ይግባ! ባይድን ይርዳን ወዘተ” ስንል እኮ ልክ እነ ግራኝና ሞግዚቶቹ የፈለጉት ወጥመድ ውስጥ እንድንገባ ተገድድን እኮ! ለማንኛውም አሁን አንገብጋቢው እና በጣም አጣዳፊ የሆነው ተግባር አብዮት አህመድን እና ኢሳያስን ባፋጣኝ መጠራረጉ ላይ ነው። የኢትዮጵያ ወደፊት ያሳስበኛል የምንል ከሆነ ብቸኛው መፍትሔ ይህ ነው! የግብጹ ፕሬዚደንት አል-ሲሲ ግብጽን ለማዳን መሀመድ ሙርሲን ባፋጣኝ መጥረግ ነበረበት። ግብጾች እንደ እኛ የዋሆች/ሞኞች አይደሉም ልባሞች ናቸው!

Bombs recently opened a hole in one of the oldest mosques in the world. It is located in the Tygray region of Ethiopia, where a terrible war has been going on for more than two months. On Tuesday December 15, soldiers approached Maryam Zion Church in Axum, Tygray’s cultural capital. They were Ethiopian federal troops and Amharic militias. The church was packed. There were possibly a thousand people in and around the building.

The advancing soldiers caused a lot of commotion, also because the Maryam Zion Church is not just any church. It would, according to the Ethiopians, house the Biblical Ark of the Covenant. That Ark is a sacred chest in which the two stone plates with the Ten Commandments are kept. Only a monk, appointed as guardian, may see them.

The troops forced all people onto the square in front of the church. Then they opened fire on the crowd. According to witnesses, 750 people died. Although independent research groups could not yet verify that number, because they are still refused by the Ethiopian government.

The knowledge center Europe External Program with Africa (EEPA) reported several times about the confrontation in its situation reports on the region. The soldiers may have thought that members of the Tygray People’s Liberation Front were hiding in the Maryam Zion Church. Since November 4, the Ethiopian and Eritrean armies, supported by Amharic militias, have been fighting the Tygray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). The conflict is creating a disastrous humanitarian situation in the region. Almost 60,000 Tigreans have already fled to neighboring Sudan. According to the United Nations, 2.3 million people, more than half of the population in the Tygray region, are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

Besides people, important heritage sites are also not spared the violence. The cultural capital of Tygray, Axum is the historical capital of the Axumite Empire. The archaeological sites in and around Axum are on the list of Unesco World Heritage.

The most important Axumite monuments in the city are the Steles, obelisks of up to 33 meters high that are about 1700 years old. They are a symbol of Ethiopian identity.

The EEPA has already reported heavy fighting in and around Axum. Due to the extremely scarce reports from Tygray, it remains to be seen to what extent these important heritage sites have been affected by the violence.

Worrying stories from Tygray

“There are no reports that the Maryam Zion Church has been looted or destroyed,” says journalist Martin Plaut. ‘It is very difficult to find out exactly what is going on in the region. People literally have to walk hundreds of kilometers to tell their story. ‘

The little information that does become known comes from Tigreans who, usually on foot, reach Sudan or Mekele, the regional capital of the Tygray region. From there they can share photos, videos and their story with journalists or on social media. Most of the reports from the EEPA and most of the information about incidents in the area are based on these testimonials.

Al-Nejashi Mosque looted

A historic building that was certainly damaged is the Al-Nejashi Mosque. In recent weeks, outrage has arisen from the Ethiopian diaspora and the international Muslim community when reports and photos of damage to that historic mosque were circulated.

The Al-Nejashi is one of the oldest mosques in Africa. The EEPA reported on December 18 that the mosque was bombed and looted by Ethiopian and Eritrean soldiers. Several people were killed, also according to the knowledge center, because they wanted to stop the looting of the mosque.

Religion and Heritage in Ethiopia

Many Ethiopians are religious, faith is an important part of society. Atheism does exist, but it is often taboo. Ethiopia is home to many religious buildings and sites, often preserving relics and sacred pieces of great cultural importance.

According to the CIA’s World Factbook, Christianity is the largest religion in Ethiopia, with 43.8 percent Ethiopian Orthodox, 22.8 percent Protestants, and 0.7 percent Catholics. They are followed by Islam (31.3 percent of Ethiopians). There is also an old but small Jewish community.

The attack is said to have taken place on November 26. According to an article by the Middle East Eye news site, artifacts such as religious manuscripts, books and letters dating back to the seventh century were also stolen. An adjoining building containing the remains of followers of the Prophet Muhammad has also been damaged.

It was only after the photos of the destruction had been circulated that the Ethiopian government wanted to confirm that the destruction had taken place and promised to have the building restored.

Since the beginning of the recent war, the EEPA has been reporting serious looting in Tygray. Soldiers carry out raids: they clear homes (and even take windows and doors with them) and steal important cultural heritage from churches, mosques, monasteries and archaeological sites.

An important archaeological site of looting is the one in Yeha in the northeast of Tygray, fifty kilometers east of Aksum. There is the oldest standing structure in Ethiopia, the temple of Yeha. The temple is said to have been built around 700 BC. In addition, there is an Ethiopian Orthodox monastery in Yeha where ancient Ethiopian Christian writings are kept.

Witnesses say the church at the archaeological site of Yeha was looted by Eritrean troops, an EEPA situation report dated Dec. 31. The school in Yeha, where people took shelter, was also said to have been bombed. Nothing is known about victims. “There has been destruction or looting in Yeha, but it is not clear what exactly happened,” says Martin Plaut.

What exactly happened in Yeha is not known. But there are many reports of ritual books and other artifacts stolen from religious buildings, such as the Al-Nejashi Mosque. The chance that ancient writings in Yeha have been stolen or destroyed is real.

The role of neighboring Eritrea

According to witnesses, Eritrean troops play a key role in the looting of Tygray. “Before the war broke out, Eritrean trucks were stationed on the border with Tygray,” says Martin Plaut. ‘We didn’t know why. But recently there have been reports of trucks full of goods from Tygray leaving the region for warehouses in Eritrea. Local church leaders are asking not to buy any of those Tygray properties if they were to be sold. ‘
