AFRIN = AFRICA
Turkey is going to enable the massacres of the Christian population in Afrin. Women and children will lose their lives in front of our very own eyes. The international community is silent about this.
This is going to be a massacre. Not only in Afrin, Turkey committed grave human rights violations and crimes within the country as well. These should be carefully investigated and proved.

The Syrian Massacres
Published: July 28, 1860
While the Christian world is ringing with the hideous echoes of the recent massacres of the Christians in Syria, and the most clamorous partisans of the Western Powers in the Crimean war seem ready to prostrate themselves in recantation and expiation at the feet of the Czar, it is, perhaps, hardly worth while to say even a single word in behalf of that strange people of the Libanus whose scimitars have done all this fearful work. Certainly there can be no doubt that the destruction of the Maronite towns and people is a flagrant and horrible proof of the utter incompetency of Turkey to fulfill the obligations which she accepted as the price of her existence, from the Christian nations at the peace of Paris. Certainly, too, it must be admitted that Christendom and civilization are alike disgraced by the diplomatic recognition of an empire in which the profession of Christianity puts its votaries practically beyond the pale of any law that can be enforced, and subjects them to the conditions of life in the primeval wilderness, where every man is his own police and court, and code. Yet when we reflect that Turkey entered into no engagements with regard to her Christian subjects, at Paris in 1856, more binding than those which were assumed at the same time and place with regard to the free navigation of the great central river of Europe, the Danube, by Austria; and that however short the Sultan has fallen of keeping his sovereign word, the Emperor FRANCIS JOSEPH has still more openly laughed at his own, we may well hesitate at indorsing in America the vehement language applied in Europe to the first of these defaulting potentates by journalists and statesmen who deal far more gently with the second. And however disagreeable it may be for English Senators and French Envoys to be forced to chat over the dinner-table with the Ambassadors of a State within the borders of which the age of GENGHIS KHAN is acting out once more, in all its historic terrors, it must not be forgotten that the same Christian gentlemen do not think themselves dishonored by the most familiar intercourse with the representatives of an Austrian Emperor, who is inflicting upon the Christians of Venice the utmost extremity of suffering and of insult; or of a Neapolitan King, who stands convicted of ordering with his own hand the wholesale slaughter and ruin of Christian cities in his own dominions. While Christendom consents to look on quietly and diplomatically upon the furious efforts of impossible Christian Governments to maintain themselves at the expense of all Christian liberties and all human rights in Europe, it seems a little hard, to say the least of it, that the death-penalty should he so peremptorily pronounced against a Mohammedan Government which is merely unable to protect those sanctities of civil order which the Hapsburgs and the Bourbons are doing their best utterly to annihilate.
The news which reaches us to-day through the English Government, that the Christians of the great city of Damascus have been overtaken by the tempest of Druse persecution, and that the Consular character itself has been violated in the persons of the representatives of Holland and the United States, will no doubt kindle into a flame the determination of the “Western Powers to take the law of Turkey into their own hands; and as the Turkish Empire has unquestionably outlived its lease of power for good, no man can be sorry that the public feeling of Christendom should be driven to demand the solemn extinction by combined Europe of that factitious Turkish independence which it was necessary to maintain as against the arrogant pretensions of the late Emperor NICHOLAS, but which now stands revealed, a sham and an imposture too cruelly sanguinary in its results, to be any longer treated either with indulgence or contempt. Still, even to falling Turkey and to the ferocious Druses we may afford to be just. The Druses are a singular race. In religion neither Mohammedans nor Christians, but, as they proudly describe themselves, “Unitarians,” they have endured alike from their Moslem suzerains at Constantinople, and from their Christian neighbors, the Maronites, the same calamities which they are now inflicting upon the Syrian followers of the Cross. The line of their Emirs has been more than once illustrated by princes to whose virtues all travelers have eagerly rendered the homage won by FACARDIN, at the courts of Italy, two hundred years ago. So far as they and their victims, the Maronites, are concerned, the outbreak which is now astounding the world must be referred not to any exceptional state of the Turkish empire at large, but to the ancient and inveterate feud which has raged from time immemorial between the two races. There is much reason to believe, indeed, that for the last eighteen months, the Maronites, who ate the especial proteges of Russia in Syria, have been urging on the Druses to the terrible campaign which they are now prosecuting with such mediaeval fury. In a letter from Syria, published in the TIMES a day or two since, one of our own missionaries, Dr. THOMPSON, a most competent and trustworthy witness in the case, distinctly states that the onslaught of the Druses was provoked by an expedition of Maronite Christians on its way to storm the Druse Capital, Shwefat, near Beyrout. This expedition the Turkish Pasha vainly attempted to arrest, the Christians, on their way to annihilate the Druses, spurning his authority as haughtily as the Druses have done in the hour of their vengeful victory.
The Turkish Government, then, should hardly be saddled with the entire responsibility of crimes which cannot even be carried to the account of Mussulman fanaticism. No doubt the Mohammedan populations bitterly hating the Christians, and fearing the Christian Powers, have availed themselves of the Druse war to gratify their thirst of Christian blood without directly implicating their own Government at Stamboul. But as the Druse was itself has arisen from circumstances altogether foreign to Mohammedanism and the temper of Islam, it should be enough, surely, that the Sultan and his people are destined to bear the consequences, without being blasphemed as the origin of these frightful events.

“Armenians Should Stand With Afrin”
Armenians living in Serêkaniye called upon all Armenians around the world to speak out against the Turkish state’s invasion attempt against Afrin.
Ara Keşişyan is an Armenian citizen living in Serêkaniye city of Rojava. His family from Silvan district of Amed (Diyarbakır) fled the Armenian Genocide and settled in Serêkaniye in 1920. He speaks Kurdish and Arabic as well as his mother tongue Armenian.
In Başko village of Silvan, it was only his grandmother of the 70-member family that survived the genocide.
Keşişyan comments that the mentality of the time’s Turkish ruling to change the demography continues with Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan today. He tells; “Erdoğan wants to make the Armenians lose. He wants to send the Armenians away from Qamishlo, Lebanon and Aleppo to Europe. He wants to estrange them from their essence.”
“WE ARE READY TO TAKE UP ARMS FOR AFRIN”
Remarking that the Turkish state’s Afrin attack is an attack on the democratic autonomous system- the living and administration system of peoples- Keşişyan says; “Erdoğan attacks Afrin and Afrin mounts great resistance. We believe that the Afrin resistance will finish off Erdoğan. All of us, young and old alike, are ready to take up arms and defend Afrin. We are glad to have the democratic autonomous system and the YPG. Victory will be ours.”
“REMAINING ARMENIANS WILL ALSO BE KILLED”
Keşişyan invited all Armenians to take sides with the Afrin resistance, saying the following; “Armenians everywhere and their institutions should stand with Afrin. Should Erdoğan reach his goal in Afrin, there will be no Armenians, no Kurds or Christians left on these lands. I am calling on all Armenians to stand with Afrin resistance in every way possible.”
