Red Sun Phenomenon ‘Caused by Hurricane Ophelia’

An “unusual” reddish sky and red-looking sun have been reported across many parts of England.

The phenomenon was initially seen in the west of England and Wales before spreading to other areas.

BBC weather presenter Simon King said it was due to the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia dragging in tropical air and dust from the Sahara.

He added that debris from forest fires in Portugal and Spain was also playing a part.

The dust has caused shorter wavelength blue light to be scattered, making it appear red.

Meanwhile, hundreds took to Twitter to share their theories and snaps of the unusual red sun and yellow skies.

Using the hashtags #redsun and #ophelia, pictures were posted with earnest tags insisting that: “There is NO colour correction on this image”.

As the skies turned beige over London, Hugh Bennett‏ wondered if: “This is what it must have been like living in the olden days when everything was sepia”, while James McNicholas‏ blamed “the hipsters” for putting “an Instagram filter” on the city.

‘Freaking us out’

But trending alongside #redsun, #yellowsky and #orangesky was the hashtag #apocalypse.

Like many Ben Shephard posted that: “Not messing around this light is really freaking us out!”, while Henry Tudor, said: “This weird light is very disturbing. I keep expecting four blokes on horses to home galloping out of the sky.”

Elliot Wagland said: “I just looked out of the window and it appears the world is about to end”, and Archer Hampson‏ said: “Somebody said we should head outside because the world was ending. We thought we’d take our cameras.”

Louise Lucas, meanwhile, wanted to know if she had missed the memo “about going home early due to #apocalypse?!” and Anthony Court posted that‏: “If the world does end -please could it be before 10pm tonight when I start my nightshift.”

An American woman became an African princess last month when she married into the royal family of Ethiopia – after meeting her future husband at a modern day ‘ball’.

Ariana Austin, 33, married 35-year-old Joel Makonnen, a great-grandson of the last emperor of Ethiopia, on September 9 in Maryland.

The couple married 12 years after they first met on the dance floor of Washington, DC nightclub Pearl.

Makonnen told the New York Times that he hit on his future bride and her friend using a cheesy pick-up line.

‘I said, “You guys look like an ad for Bombay Sapphire,” or whatever the gin was,’ Mr. Makonnen recalled.

Makonnen says he immediately knew he wanted to date Austin.

Not even five minutes later I said, “You’re going to be my girlfriend,”‘ he said.

While Makonnen didn’t immediately tell Austin about his family, the truth about his heritage came out as they started to seriously date and it’s something that fascinates Austin.

She appears excited to be apart of a family that traces their roots back to the Biblical King Solomon and Queen of Sheba.

‘It’s unbeatable heritage and history,’ Austin said. ‘It combines sheer black power and ancient Christian tradition.’

The two married last month in an elaborate Ethiopian Orthodox Christian wedding involving 13 priests in Temple Hills, Maryland.

The bride and groom both wore crowns and capes in the ceremony, making them look like the true royals they are. While Austin may not have royal blood in her background, she does come from an African American/Guyanese family with rich histories abroad. Her maternal grandfather was lord mayor of Georgetown, the capital of Guyana.

Hours before the ceremony, they hosted a formal reception at Foxchase Manor in Manassas, Virginia where their 307 guests dined on platters of Ethiopian food and pre-boxed slices of Guyanese black cake.

Makonnen, or Prince Yoel as he is officially known, is related to the last emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie I, through his second son, Prince Makonnen.

Haile Salassie ruled Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974, when he was overthrown by a Marxist Derg military coup.

Makonnen’s father, Prince David, was studying abroad at the time, and was thus able to escape imprisonment.

Makonnen was born in Rome, where his parents were living in exile, and was raised in Switzerland.

When he met Austin, he was perusing an undergraduate degree at American University.

The couple quickly stood the test of a long distance relationship when, after graduating from American in 2006, Makonnen took a six-month internship in France.

Austin went to Paris the next year, where Makonnen returned in 2008 before going back to Ethiopia to start a organization with his uncle to help Ethiopian youth.

In 2012, Austin returned to the U.S. to get a master’s degree in arts education at Harvard and the two decided to take a break that year.

But they were back together again by Valentine’s Day 2014, when Makonnen popped the question with an aptly shaped princess-cut diamond ring.

Their engagement is a funny story. Makonnen went over to his girlfriend’s house to propose, but he knocked on the door so forcefully that Austin thought someone was trying to break in and called her parents for help.

‘He was aggressively knocking so I didn’t answer. He came back, and then I opened the door,’ she said.

The two moved in together after the wedding, and are living in the Washington, DC area.

Makonnen works in the legal department at Otsuka America Pharmaceutical.

His new wife works in philanthropy at the Executives Alliance for Boys and Men of Color.

Nestlé Removes Christian Cross from Greek Yogurt Packaging

Joining a growing trend in Europe to abolish Christian imagery to avoid offending other “sensibilities,” Nestlé has removed the image of a Christian cross from its Greek yogurt packaging featuring an Orthodox church on the island of Santorini.

Whereas in real life the blue dome of the iconic Anastasis church is surmounted by a white cross, the image of the church used for publicity has been photo-shopped to remove the offending Christian symbol.

In eliminating the cross, Nestlé, the world’s largest food and beverage company, has mimicked the choice of supermarket giant Lidl for its similar packaging. To justify its decision, Lidl said they were expunging the cross so as “not to hurt sensibility of other religions.”

The doctored images of the church were used for the packaging of Lidl’s Eridanous brand Greek-style yogurt — an in-house label which also includes a range of feta cheese, moussaka, and pistachio products.

A spokesman for the supermarket chain, which has hundreds of stores throughout Europe and the United Kingdom, explained the modifications by saying: “We avoid the use of religious symbols because we do not wish to exclude any religious beliefs.”

The spokesman added: “We are a company that respects diversity and this is what explains the design of this packaging.”

The irony, of course, is that the removal of the cross is a destruction of diversity, by refusing to acknowledge the historical, cultural, and religious importance of the symbol. The company is, in fact, fighting exclusion by excluding Christian symbolism.

It is not the first time Christian symbols are hidden or are criticised not to hurt the sensibility of other religion:

As noted by the European Post, Nestlé’s cross-removal is merely the latest in a string of attempts to censure Christian imagery from the public eye, usually in the name of tolerance and diversity.

United Kingdom

In Great Britain, a vendor was ousted from her stall at a market because of her refusal to stop selling Knights Templar coffee mugs, which featured a Christian cross as well as a Latin citation from the biblical book of Psalms. Tina Gayle, 57, was ordered to remove the £6 mugs from her stall because they could purportedly upset Muslims. The Knights Templar was a Catholic military order founded for the protection of Christian pilgrims going to the Holy Land from Muslim soldiers and marauders.

UK schools are removing “before and after Christ”—BC and AD—from the calendar in order to avoid offending non-Christians. Schools across the country have stopped using the terms BC and AD in religious education lessons for fear of offending non-Christians. The traditional terms BC, Before Christ, and AD, Anno Domini, are being replaced with the politically correct BCE – Before the Common Era, and CE – Common Era.

Local authorities responsible for religious education syllabuses have said that the old terms may offend minorities or non-believers. Former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord George Carey called the decision a “great shame.”

Italy

Not long ago, a school in Florence, Italy, cancelled a museum visit on the grounds that the sacred art—such as Marc Chagall’s White Crucifixion— could upset non-Catholic students.

The students from the Matteotti elementary school were set to visit an exhibit titled “Divine Beauty” featuring works by Van Gogh, Chagall, Fontana, Picasso, Matisse, and Munch, until the school council intervened to cancel the field trip.

First of all, I humbly and solemnly ask you to accept my condolences for that multitude of families who lost their loved ones in the recent terrorist brutalities. Then, I extend to you, the First Lady and your family, aswell as to your great people, Ethiopian New Year Greetings of the 1994 Era of Divine Mercy from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in the Names of Our Lord Jesus Christ and His Holy Mother, The Virgin Mary.

We thank God for keeping you and your beloved ones safe after the horrendous act of “terrorism” that took place in both Washington DC and New York City. As every humane person in the world felt, my family and I were shocked by the terrifying news of the calamity that reached us from USA in the middle of our New Year’s Celebrations in Ethiopia. We were stunned by the fact that the two events, though far apart and unlike, both were ordained to coincide on your September 11, and on Ethiopian 1st day of the New Year, Meskerem 1, 1994. This date bears prophetic significance based on Biblical Covenants which verify the precise chronology of the Divine Cycle of Seven Years that remains before the end of the Millennium of the Biblical (Ethiopian) Calendar.

Hence, I am confident that the Lord will grant you and the American people the spiritual, physical and mental strength to cope with the agony and hardship you and your people are currently going through. You will also come out triumphant in your struggle for full restoration, renovation and revitalization, provided you abide by your Christian faith and deed that are rooted and instituted on the Biblical Covenants and preserved for millennia by Christians, as described in the enclosed book.

While contemplating on the horrifying news, my family and I came to ask ourselves: What are we to make of this colossal tragedy? What is the Divine Message that God conveys to humanity in general and to the people of the United States of America in particular through this appalling catastrophe of global dimension? Why do the eternal Priestly King Jesus Christ and the eternal Virgin Queen Mary, His Holy Mother, allow this monstrous affliction to happen at such universal crossroads of time and space?

Does it mean that we all, as individuals and as nations, are called upon to examine our inner selves profoundly and spiritually with the aim to find a cause for repentance to God, to ourselves and to each other? What amount of price have we to pay and for how long should we hesitate to realize that such fanaticism in the name of Islam is nothing but a scourge that came forth and is reserved to chastise Christians whenever and wherever they sin against their Biblical God of the Covenants?

Under the circumstances, in which the human nature of bigotry, recalcitrance and intransigence dominates, (and this is manifest in the multiple atrocities of the present generation,) the faithful of God have only one option. That option is to wait, in prayerful vigilance, for the time to arrive when individuals would, of their own free will, come to their senses and, with sincere mental resolve, make critical choices. The first choice would be for them to deny, in public witness, the Evil Spirit of Wickedness and Death, called the Devil, the notorious arch agent of destruction who seems to prevail and control their lives today as ever. The second and almost simultaneous or immediate choice would be to accept and be invigorated by the Holy Spirit of Goodness and Life of the Almighty God. As a result, the survival in this world of such repentant individuals singularly and of their nations collectively will definitely be replete with the sweet fruit of life, secured as a house built on a solid rock, and crowned with a lasting success. This is the genuine repentance -the obligation of a Christian -a commitment required of us, as individuals, as a family and as a nation: the simple terms and conditions for reconciling ourselves with the Living God. (Mt. 7, 24-27; 10, 32-33; Mk. 1, 14-15; Jn. 9, 39-41; Lk. 13; Rev. 17-19)

Now, once again, in the fulfillment of my Ethiopian duty, I am prompted and obliged by the ongoing tragedy to write you this letter. It reminded me of the timely warning constituted in the Divine Message that was initially contained in the booklet I sent in 1996 to your predecessor, Mr. Bill Clinton by a registered mail from my exile-residence in the metropolitan area of Washington D.C. and later published in USA in 1997 in my book entitled Ethiopia: The Classic Case which I enclosed you herein. General Colin Powell, the incumbent Secretary of State of your Government, was among those American officials and personalities pertinent to the case who received from me copies of that Divine Message at that time. Surprisingly enough and to the detriment of your country and people, none of them, including Mr. Clinton, bothered to answer me in any way, even acknowledging, through their private secretaries, receipt of my mail.

This impropriety was also an unfortunate misjudgment that came up in contrast to the reaction of several other world leaders who had received my mail and responded to me appropriately. I hope, this time, that attitude in the White House and elsewhere would change for the better, specially since the perception of Your Excellency and your party on such issues would undoubtedly be a positive, serious and Christian one.

Mr. President! I have enclosed, with humility and fidelity, a copy of the book aforementioned where you will find the list of names who had received my mail that carried the Divine Message worldwide and in the United States. Let this small and materially unworthy gift show my deep concern for your cause and my share of spiritual support in the challenges that face you now and in the days ahead. Beside your perusal of it, I earnestly suggest that you urge your officials and the American people, to read it for their own sake. It will help them acquirea more comprehensive understanding of the current situation and trend of events in the world, at least from the Ethiopian perspective.

Hundreds of birds were filmed fleeing coastal Ireland today just hours before Hurricane Ophelia will batter the coast with 80mph gales in what could be the worst storm to hit the island in 56 years.

Sarah Kavanagh, who lives in Cork, where the storm is expected to hit first, tweeted a video of the birds flying away at about 8am, saying: ‘Ummmm… think they know there’s something big coming? #Ophelia #mondays.’

The Met Office has warned of potential ‘danger to life’ as the storm approaches South West Ireland, with it likely to hit the coast at 11am today before making its way further east towards Wales and the Isle of Man.

Northern Ireland and Wales will be hit by gales of up to 70mph and the rest of Britain will see heavy rain, as troops were placed on standby in Ireland and many public services closed amid fears about the impact of winds.

Remnants of Ophelia, which was previously classified as a hurricane as it made its way across the Atlantic Ocean, will result in ‘exceptional’ weather – exactly 30 years after the Great Storm of 1987 killed 18 people.

Thousands of people were stranded by Ophelia this morning after cross-Channel ferry companies began canceling services because of dangerous sea conditions.

My last note: During a french stage presentation of Shakspear’s “Hamlet”, there is a scene where we see Ophelia drowned on stage by the very account of her death which is spoken by her double, who has emerged from the small theater. It is the story of her own death that she struggles against, trying in vain to swim against the current of this torrent of language, by saying the text backwards.
