Orack Bahama: “Christians who take religion most seriously ‘suspicious of those not like them’”
In a wide-ranging conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marilynne Robinson, President Obama suggested that Christians who take their religion the most seriously often adopt an “us versus them” mentality.
In the interview, published in the Nov. 5 issue of The New York Review of Books, the president lamented “the fact that here in the United States, sometimes Christian interpretation seems to posit an ‘us versus them,’ and those are sometimes the loudest voices.
“But sometimes I think you also get frustrated with kind of the wishy-washy, more liberal versions where anything goes,” Mr. Obama said, referring to Ms. Robinson. “How do you reconcile the idea of faith being really important to you and you caring a lot about taking faith seriously with the fact that, at least in our democracy and our civic discourse, it seems as if folks who take religion the most seriously sometimes are also those who are suspicious of those not like them?”
“Has there ever been as miserably dense-brained and/or deceitful weasel as this operator occupying the White House? As a non-Christian, non-Jew immigrant woman, the ONLY place in the world I feel most accepted and welcomed and free to pursue my dreams is in this Judeo-Christian USA. You miserable divisive treacherous venomous fool, what other country but Christian based countries has accepted non-Christians of any stripe more and more openly? And what country amongst those Christian lands has set the unparalleled example of that standard???”
“People are increasingly suspicious of this President’s motives to constantly make derogatory and inflammatory comments about Christianity and Christians that he totally refuses to make about Islam.”
“I can’t get over how horrible the President’s grammar is, much less his lack of logic! He speaks with broad generalities making them sound true for all Christians. And the interviewer needs to read the Bible if she is going to try to quote it. They are quite simply demonstrating what Paul said about how the unbelievers that would call the believers fools are themselves fools. What Jesus said about how the truth is hidden from the unbelievers is very well demonstrated in their conversation. Calling themselves wise, they have no wisdom. They are speaking foolishness exactly as predicted.”
