A group of Egyptian Coptic Christians, including Amer Sabet, holding a cross, march from the White House toward the U.S. Capitol in remembrance of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians recently beheaded in Libya by Islamic State.

Hanna Asaad, a network engineer in Fairfax, Va., grew up in the village of Aloor in southern Egypt. He was able to immigrate to the United States several years ago, but his best friend and cousin, Samuel Alham, sought work as a laborer in nearby Libya, like many other Coptic Christians in the impoverished region.

Shortly after Christmas, Alham and 20 of his fellow Coptic laborers were kidnapped by Islamic State militants in Libya. In mid-February, they were marched to a Mediterranean beach in handcuffs and orange prison jumpsuits. Then they were beheaded with knives as a video camera recorded the gruesome scene.

On Tuesday, Asaad, 29, joined 20 protesters who donned orange jumpsuits and stood outside the White House, then knelt with their hands behind their backs. Behind them, other demonstrators held up photographs of the real victims and the blood-red waves where their headless corpses were thrown.

I kept calling my cousin and telling him he had to leave Libya, but there was no safe way out,” Asaad said. “The militants came looking for Christians and then took them away. They murdered my cousin, my nephew and my classmates. Someday soon they will start murdering people in this country.”

About 50 demonstrators, who marched slowly from the White House to Capitol Hill under police escort, demanded that U.S officials take more aggressive action against the Islamic State and other radical Islamist groups, including Boko Haram in Nigeria and the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.

Obama, Obama, did you see? Christian blood in the sea,”they chanted.

For Copts in the Washington area and across the United States — mostly a population of educated, professional émigrés — the seaside slaughter was an especially horrific incident in a history of increasing persecution that the Christian minority group has faced in its native Egypt. Recent attacks included the bombing of a church on New Year’s Day, 2011, in the city of Alexandria, which left 21 worshippers dead and 79 injured.

Meanwhile, as militant Islamist ideology spreads, Christian groups are confronting attacks in other parts of the Middle East and South Asia.

Mediterranean: Muslim Migrants Threw Christians Overboard

Posted by addisethiopia / አዲስ ኢትዮጵያ on April 16, 2015

MediterrTragedyMuslims who were among migrants trying to get from Libya to Italy in a boat this week threw 12 fellow passengers overboard — killing them — because the 12 were Christians, Italian police said Thursday.

Italian authorities have arrested 15 people on suspicion of murdering the Christians at sea, police in Palermo, Sicily, said.

The original group of 105 people left Libya on Tuesday in a rubber boat. Sometime during the trip north across the Mediterranean Sea, the alleged assailants — Muslims from the Ivory Coast, Mali and Senegal — threw the 12 overboard, police said.

Other people on the voyage told police that they themselves were spared “because they strongly opposed the drowning attempt and formed a human chain,” Palermo police said.

The boat was intercepted by an Italian navy vessel, which transferred the passengers to a Panamanian-flagged ship. That ship docked in Palermo on Wednesday, after which the arrests were made, police said.

The 12 who died were from Nigeria and Ghana, police said.

9-Year-Old Falls Down Tree, Meets Jesus, And Recovers From Rare Childhood Illness

Posted by addisethiopia / አዲስ ኢትዮጵያ on April 14, 2015

pa-real-lifeAsked what Jesus looked like, Annabel said: ‘He had a beautiful long white robe, dark skin and a big beard – kinda like Santa Claus, but not really.

A nine-year-old who fell 30ft inside a hollow tree claims she ‘went to heaven and sat in Jesus’ lap,’ while unconscious.

Christy Wilson Beam, 42, says she was amazed that her daughter Annabel, now 12, escaped the horrific fall completely unscathed – and even woke up ‘miraculously cured’ of a chronic childhood illness.

In December 2011, Annabel was playing with her sisters Abigail, now 14 and Adelynn, now 10, near her house in Texas when she slipped and fell inside a hollowed-out cottonwood tree.

She hit her head three times and was knocked unconscious.

Alerted by the family, a fire crew managed to harness Annabel to safety and she was rushed to Cook Children’s Hospital in Forth Worth by helicopter.

Fearing the worst, medics prepped brain and spinal injury teams to stand by for Annabel’s arrival – but, incredibly, she survived without a scratch.

Even more incredible were the stories Annabel began to share in the days afterwards.

She told her parents: ‘I went to heaven when I was in that tree. I sat in Jesus’ lap.’

Mum Christy claims she wasn’t playing around. ‘This wasn’t like one of her long, spun-out recaps of a funny dream or movie she’d seen,’ she says.

Annabel also told her parents that the gates of heaven are made of gold and that Jesus had said to her it wasn’t her time.

Christy was initially concerned that Annabel was suffering from a head injury, but MRI and CT scans revealed she hadn’t sustained one.

Further tests also showed Annabel was no longer displaying symptoms of pseudo-obstruction motility disorder, a rare incurable condition that had seen her in and out of hospital since 2008.

The disorder meant she had to have a liquid diet, or only eat plain, soft foods. She also took ten different types of medication each day.

But, doctors have cut that down to three per day, while Annabel can now eat McDonald’s and pizza if she fancies.

Annabel’s dad can’t help but put it down to what happened in the tree. ‘I can’t explain what happened to her physically while she was in that tree,’ said Mr Beam, who’s a vet.

All I have to go on is the radiological data and the medical records from before and after. The proof is in the pudding. She wasn’t well before and now she is,’ he added.

Asked what Jesus looked like, Annabel said: ‘He had a beautiful long white robe, dark skin and a big beard – kinda like Santa Claus, but not really.’

Attack follows Taliban bombing which killed 17 in Lahore church in March

Two young Muslims have put a 14-year-old Pakistani boy in hospital with burns to 55 percent of his body after they set him on fire because he is a Christian.

The teenager from Lahore in Punjab province Pakistan, who has been identified only as Nuaman, had just left a local shop when he was beaten and burnt with Kerosene.

The boy, who is now being treated at Mayo Hospital in Lahore, described how he was approached by the two Muslim youths as they left Friday prayers at their local mosque.

They asked him what his religion was and then, when he replied he was a Christian, they started beating him.

Nuaman tired to escaped but as he fled the two other boys poured Kerosene on him and set him on fire.

He said he ran – still on fire – until he reached a mound of sand which he rolled around in. Nuaman said some members of his local community helped him put out his burning clothes by pouring more sand on top of him, Breitbart news network reported.

Pope Francis Calls Armenian Deaths ‘First Genocide of 20th Century’

Posted by addisethiopia / አዲስ ኢትዮጵያ on April 13, 2015

In a time of universal deceit – telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” George Orwell

Some notes on the below video:

The St. George (Sourp Kevork) Armenian Apostolic Holy Orthodox Church of Addis Abeba was built in 1935, replacing a chapel that existed since 1923. According to the book, “Old tracks In the New Flower, a historical guide Addis Ababa”, the Archbishop Asanian came from the Constantinople (the present Istanbul) in person in 1928 to set the first stone this church, the construction of which was funded by the Armenian Mouradian in memory of his father, George. The founding ceremony was also attended by Empress Menen under a gilt, fringed umbrella, with Ras Tafari in a red cloak, and by the Ethiopian Echegue.

Before the construction of this church, Armenians traditionally often made use Ethiopian Orthodox churches for their weddings and funerals.

Armenians had an active community. A large slice of the economy was in their hands, bringing wealth both to themselves and their host country. The Djerrians, Garrbedians, Hagapians, Avakians, Pareginas, and others were famous in the city as educated and cultured families who owned shoe factories and cinemas, eyeglass and watch repair business, as well as many of the oldest buildings in Piazza where their shops were located. As importers, electricians, goldsmiths and technicians, the Armenians were useful productive citizens.

Armenian goldsmiths, traders and architects were invited to settle in Ethiopia more than 150 years ago by Emperor Johannes IV. Buoyed by the ties between Ethiopian and Armenian Orthodoxy, the community thrived.

After the Armenian Genocide in 1915, Haile Selassie, Ethiopia’s regent who later became Emperor, opened his arms to the Armenian people even wider, adopting 40 orphans as wards of court. In return, the Ethio-Armenians proved fiercely loyal.

One trader used his European connections to buy arms for Ethiopia’s resistance movement against the Italian occupation during World War II. Others ran an underground newspaper. Several gave their lives in service of their adopted homeland.

Pope Francis described the 1915 mass killings of Armenians by Turks as the “first genocide of the 20th century” on Sunday, touching off a diplomatic furor with Turkey and entering into a tense historical debate with wider implications for the Vatican’s relations with Islam.

Turkey, which has long rejected the term genocide to describe the killings, swiftly called its ambassador to the Vatican back to Ankara for consultations after the pope’s remarks. Turkey’s foreign ministry also summoned the Vatican’s envoy to Ankara, informing him that the government was “disappointed and saddened” by the pontiff’s comments, according to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency.

The pope, speaking at a mass in St. Peter’s Basilica to mark the 100 years since the killings, addressed the massacres in the context of the contemporary persecution of Christians in the Muslim world. That subject has become an increasingly pressing theme for Pope Francis—who, before becoming pontiff, had close ties to Buenos Aires’s overwhelmingly Christian Armenian community.

Even as he has continued to call for better relations between Catholicism and Islam, the pope has urged Muslim leaders to denounce the actions of extremists and pushed Christians of different churches to stand together in the face of anti-Christian violence.

The pope’s statement is a boost for Armenia’s decadeslong campaign to define the killings as genocide, as well as a setback for Turkey’s efforts to fend off the accusations of systematic killing.

Armenians—the vast majority of whom are Christians—say that as many as 1.5 million Armenians were systematically killed during World War I in today’s eastern Turkey, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire.

A number of countries officially recognize the killings as genocide. But Turkey contests Armenian claims about the scale of losses; it argues that hundreds of thousands actually died in warfare and famine, and that many Turks were also killed by Armenians. Turkey argues that the question of genocide should be left to historians rather than politicians.

Pope Francis said Sunday that “it is necessary, and indeed a duty,” to “recall the centenary of that tragic event, that immense and senseless slaughter whose cruelty your forbears had to endure…Concealing or denying evil is like allowing a wound to keep bleeding without bandaging it.”

Turkey accused the Vatican of using history for political aims: by singling out Armenians and not mentioning all lost lives in Anatolia during World War I. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the comments were “not fitting of the Pope.”

The Pope’s declaration, divorced from historical and legal facts, is unacceptable. Religious posts are not positions to stoke hatred and grudges on baseless claims,” Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said in a message from his official Twitter account.

It wasn’t the first time a pope has called the 1915 deaths genocide. Pope Francis, in referring to “the first genocide of the 20th century,” was quoting a 2001 common declaration by Pope John Paul II and Catholicos Karekin II, head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, who was also present at Sunday’s Mass, along with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan.

Pope Francis went further than the 2001 declaration, calling the killing of Armenians one of “three massive and unprecedented tragedies” in the 20th century. “The remaining two were perpetrated by Nazism and Stalinism,” he said. The latter reference was to the 1932-33 man-made famine in Ukraine, part of Joseph Stalin’s effort to collectivize Soviet agriculture, which killed as many as 7.5 million people.

The pope also spoke of the 1915 killings in connection to recent attacks on Christians, with an impassioned reference to “so many of our defenseless brothers and sisters who, on account of their faith in Christ or their ethnic origin, are publicly and ruthlessly put to death—decapitated, crucified, burned alive—or forced to leave their homeland.”

The pope has become increasingly vocal about the persecution of Christians around the world, especially in Muslim-majority countries. He has called on Muslim leaders to denounce the actions of Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq. At a Good Friday ceremony on April 3, he deplored the world’s “complicit silence” about such persecution, including the previous day’s killings of nearly 150—many of them Christians—by a Somali insurgent group in Kenya.

The Good Friday ceremony prominently featured Christians from Iraq, Syria, Nigeria, Egypt and China, countries in which Christians experience varying degrees of violence and official discrimination.

In a separate written message to Armenians released by the Vatican on Sunday, the pope appeared to suggest that other leaders should join him in adopting the language of genocide: “All who are heads of state and of international organizations are called to oppose such crimes with a firm sense of duty, without ceding to ambiguity or compromise.”

A group of 40 members of Congress introduced a resolution to formally recognize the Armenian genocide in March, a move likely to strain U.S.-Turkish relations. Rep. Adam Schiff (D., Calif.), lead sponsor of the resolution, praised the pope’s remarks, saying he hoped they would “inspire our President and Congress to demonstrate a like commitment to speaking the truth about the Armenian genocide and to renounce Turkey’s campaign of concealment and denial.”

President Barack Obama pledged during his 2008 campaign that he would formally recognize the genocide though he hasn’t followed through. In remarks last year, Mr. Obama called the killings “one of the worst atrocities of the 20th century” without referring to them as genocide.

Obama and other leaders will now face significant pressure,” said Henri Barkey, a former State Department official who currently teaches international relations at Lehigh University. “Until now, Turkey always tried to prevent Western recognition. The pope’s sermon is a serious crack.”

‘Egypt is Preparing for War With Israel’

Posted by addisethiopia / አዲስ ኢትዮጵያ on April 7, 2015

Maimonides (Rambam) wrote that the nation of Ishmael (Muslims) injures and harms the Jews greatly. He claimed that there has never been a nation opposing Israel and degrading, scorning, and hating the Jews as they do.

Noha Hashad, pro-Israeli nuclear scientist who escaped Egypt after years of torture, says what’s happening in Sinai isn’t what we think.

Noha Hashad (51), an Egyptian nuclear scientist who fled the Nile state in 2011 after her support of Israel made her a target for torture over many long years, has exposed troubling insights regarding Egypt’s military buildup in the Sinai Peninsula, as it fights terrorist organizations there.

Speaking to Israel Hayom’s Emily Amrousi from her new home in Haifa, Hashad was asked to give her take about Egypt’s actions in Sinai, where the Egyptian army has been fighting radical groups such as Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, a group that recently swore allegiance to Islamic State (ISIS).

“That’s all for show,” appraised Hashad. “In the race for the presidency, Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis supported (President Abdel Fattah) al-Sisi, who isn’t really fighting them.”

The nuclear scientist warned “Egypt is preparing for war with Israel. It armed and trained Hamas in Gaza. Whoever knows Arabic can hear the heads of Egyptian military intelligence talk about wide canals that open up between Israel and Egypt that will be used at the appropriate time.”

The warning echoes appraisals by Col. (res.) Dr. Shaul Shay, former deputy head of the Israel National Security Council, who wrote in Israel Defense last December that the “Badr 2014” military maneuver, its largest in decades, was meant to prepare for “a potential conflict with Israel.”

Hashad spoke to the Israeli paper about the culture of hatred for Israel that has been rampant in Egypt, despite a decades-old peace treaty.

She argued that the conflict between Israel and Palestinian Arabs isn’t the cause of Egyptian hatred for Israel, but rather “the Palestinian struggle is a byproduct of Egyptian hatred. (Palestine Liberation Organization founder Yasser) Arafat served in the Egyptian army. The Palestine Liberation Organization was invented by Egypt during the reign of (former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel) Nasser.”

“Egyptian generals give lectures everywhere and tell stories of how Israel is the only enemy of the Arabs, the only target,” said Hashad. “The incitement against Jews is done on a daily basis on television, in films and by famous actors. They treat Israel as a temporary phenomenon.”

Egypt has been imposing a massive buffer zone inside Gaza on the southern border with the Sinai, evicting thousands of locals and creating a presence within the Hamas stronghold.

Last February the Nile state sealed a $2 billion arms deal with Russia, and just last Tuesday US President Barack Obama unfroze American military aid that had been suspended in the violent coup that put al-Sisi in power in July, 2013.

“The Koran is a Zionist text”

Hashad received her doctorate in nuclear physics from Beni-Suef University, and taught nuclear physics at the university as well as at Cairo University. She also ran her own research laboratory.

Born as a Muslim in Cairo, she was sent to a private school in Saudi Arabia where she studied Islam. Her mother’s family traces its ancestry to Hussein Bin Ali, the ground of the founder of Islam Mohammed, and himself the founder of Shia Islam.

She told Israel Hayom that her father’s family has a connection to Judaism, saying, “apparently, my last name, Hashad, is derived from the Hebrew word Hassid.”

After a chance encounter with an Israeli professor through an e-mail in 1999 and a rebuff from the government denying her from attending a conference in Jerusalem or leaving Egypt, her interest in the Jewish people was sparked by a BBC article that quoted the Koran referencing the Temple and King Solomon.

“I discovered that the Koran mentions Jewish rights to the land of Israel in a clear manner. Later on, during my interrogations, I was accused of the horrible crime of supporting Zionism. If being a Zionist means to say that the land of Israel belongs to the people of Israel, then the Koran is a Zionist book,” she said.

Hashad elaborated that in the Koran “it is written that the land of Israel belongs to ‘the nation of Moses.’ Who are ‘the people of Moses’ if not Israel? This also appears in books that offer commentary about the Koran. The sheikhs know this, but they prefer to nurture the incorrect narrative in order to deny this right to the Jews and to take over land.”

Secret police crackdown

Eager to reveal more of this hidden information about the Koran, Hashad went to the library of Al-Azhar University, considered one of the most important Islamic repositories of texts and research.

At the institution, she told Amrousi, she found the “original interpretation of the Koran before it was politicized and it turns out that, indeed, I was correct. The Land of Israel belongs to the Jews.”

Obama Slams ‘Less Than Loving’ Christians At Easter Prayer Breakfast

Posted by addisethiopia / አዲስ ኢትዮጵያ on April 7, 2015

Says nothing about Kenya university attacks against Christians

President Obama used an Easter breakfast at the White House Tuesday to call out what he viewed as unbecoming comments by fellow members of the Christian community. “On Easter, I do reflect on the fact that as a Christian, I’m supposed to love, and I have to say that sometimes when I listen to less-than-loving expressions by Christians, I get concerned,” the president said to a gathering of…

My note: All this mockery of Christians, just days after the gruesome massacre of Christians in Kenya – and, in the middle of the precious Holy Week for Orthodox Christians! Woow! How ignorant and insensitive of him! What’s wrong with the President?!

Some selected reactions:

“Leftists: Loud on Indiana, Silent on Kenya.”

“Pres. Obama’s theology is not very good. When Muslims say and act in ways he does not like, he states that they are not Muslims. When Christians say and act in ways he does not like he talks about the concern he feels hearing “less-than-loving expressions by Christians”.

“Obama’s list of things to do on Easter:

  1. Be concerned about about less than loving Christian expressions.
  2. Ignore the slaughter and beheading of thousands of more-than-loving Christians by his exceedingly hateful Muslim extremist.
  3. Play golf.”

“Christianity isn’t just “love.” It is full of pain and suffering, persecution, oppression, and antagonism from our enemies. The President has no clue what Christianity is about, his version of Christianity is about is as real as the Easter Bunny is.

He said what he said to try and shame us from sticking up for our Christian principles. Christians, don’t back down, the world is trying to take everything from us. The world may even succeed in that regard, but even after we have lost everything, it will not suffer us to remain. The progressives want Christians to lock ourselves “in the closet” and die there.

Find something worth fighting for, or we will be fighting for the rest of our lives. Take a stand.
