Paris — The Day After: Fear of an Anti-Muslim Backlash

Posted by addisethiopia / አዲስ ኢትዮጵያ on January 14, 2015

My Note: please do listen the second half hour of the debate on BBC WS’ World Have Your Say here to prove the wonderful analysis of the following text. The BBC has become just unbelievable. I’ve been monitoring the program since Monday. On Monday French Jews had their say, (notice how the moderator was rude to some of the participants: “make it brief!) but yesterday, today or maybe tomorrow and the days after only Muslims have their exclusive say on a clean microphone, as usual.

VHoodIt used to be that the media would at least wait a day before sweeping the latest victims of Muslim terrorism into the trash to refocus on the looming “anti-Muslim backlash” that never actually comes.

The increase in Muslim terrorism however has made it risky for the media to wait that long. 24 hours after a brutal Muslim terrorist attack, there might be another brutal Muslim terrorist attack which will completely crowd out the stories of Muslims worrying about the backlash to the latest Muslim atrocity.

The massacre at Charlie Hebdo was quickly followed by a massacre at a kosher supermarket and somewhere in between them the Islamic State in Nigeria had wiped out the populations of sixteen villages.

With so many Muslim attacks crowded together, the media had no choice but to take a deep breath and dive in with its “Muslim backlash” stories.

The Voice of America ran its “Muslims fear backlash” piece while the bodies were still warm. The Los Angeles Times rushed out its “Muslims fear backlash” story before the Kosher supermarket massacre. It quoted the Muslim spokesman for the National Observatory Against Islamophobia asserting that it is Muslims who suffer after such attacks. Muslims however weren’t the ones who suffered. The four dead Jews at a Kosher supermarket did the suffering at the hands of a Muslim gunman.

While Muslim murderers were still prowling France for victims, the media was making the story about the perpetrators, not the victims.

And Muslims around the world lined up to join the “Fear of a Backlash” party like it was an exclusive nightclub. Both Belgian and Swedish Muslims claimed to be afraid of a backlash after the Paris attacks. At least those Swedish Muslims who weren’t calling for Allah to “multiply such attacks.”

Even Detroit Muslims got in on the act. Dawud Walid, executive director of CAIR in Michigan, claimed, “We are concerned about backlash against Muslims in the west.”

Walid had endorsed the historical Islamic mass murder of Jews on Twitter and stated in a sermon, “Who are those who incurred the wrath of Allah? They are the Jews, they are the Jews.”

Even while Jews were set to be murdered by a fellow exponent of Walid’s anti-Semitic ideology, the media was pandering to his phony claims of victimization thousands of miles away.

The Muslim backlash narrative insisted that the real victims weren’t Yohan Cohen, Yoav Hattab, Philippe Braham and Francois-Michel Saada dying in a Kosher supermarket in France, but Dawud Walid, the anti-Semitic spokesman for a hate group closely linked to terrorism over in Michigan.

Is it really a backlash that Muslims fear or a moral reckoning?

In the rush to make bigots like Walid the victims, instead of the actual men and women being murdered in the name of his violent ideology, the hard questions about the connection between the historical Islamic anti-Semitism bandied about by Dawud Walid and the modern massacres of Jews go unasked.

The murder of the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists had its roots in an Islamic political and legal tradition of punishing blasphemy that has continued uninterrupted for over a thousand years. The murder of four Jews in a Kosher supermarket was part of a great Islamic tradition that began with Mohammed. The defenders of the “Prophet” began by killing blasphemers and then continued his work by killing Jews.

Muslims are not the victims of the Hebdo massacre. They are not the victims of mass murder in a Kosher supermarket. They are not the victims of the Sydney Siege.

They are the perpetrators

When the media rushes to print interviews with Muslims claiming to suddenly be terrified of an imaginary backlash, it is marginalizing and silencing the real victims of Muslim violence who have been the subjects of a Muslim assault for over a thousand years complete with literal lashings.

Not every Muslim supports what happened, but the history and theology of Islam support the ends of silencing blasphemers and killing Jews, if not necessarily the provocative individual means.

The root cause of Islamic violence is Islam. Everything else, from poverty to YouTube videos, is subsidiary at best.

The cries of “Islamophobia” and the claims of a backlash silence the victims of Muslim terror and encourage social blindness to the next Muslim attack against Jews, Christians, Atheists, Hindus, Buddhists and countless others.

The Muslim backlash story is a great media tradition that dates back to at least September 11. While the streets of downtown Manhattan were still streaked with the ashes of the dead, the media began running stories about Muslims who were changing their clothes and putting up American flags out of fear that the maddened patriotic rabble would shortly begin massacring Muslims.

The mass anti-Muslim riots after September 11 never materialized; just as they never materialized after the Sydney Siege in Australia or the latest Muslim massacres in France.

The worst thing the media came up with in Australia, after touting its phony #Illridewithyou hashtag warning that Muslims were being persecuted, was three men and one woman holding up a sign reading, “Death to ISIS; Get Out You Rag-Headed F___s.”

They were immediately interviewed by police on possible charges of Isisphobia.

If the police had been as assertive in going after every Muslim in Australia waving a “Behead all those who insult the Prophet” sign, Australia would have been a lot safer.

And if the Australian media had been as aggressive in going after Sheikh Monis, as it did after a few young men waving Australian flags on a shopping center roof, the murder of two Australians in a café might not have happened.

But instead of fighting Jihadists, the media and politicians are determined to fight the threat of a backlash to Muslim terrorism. The obsession with the backlash however implicitly admits the existence of Islamic terror and sidelines it to instead focus on the reaction to it as the greater threat.

On one side are bodies heaped across Europe and America. On the other is the occasional slice of pork on a mosque door, a little graffiti scrawled on a wall or a dirty look on public transportation.

One is genocide and the other is petty vandalism.

We don’t need any more earnest interviews in which Muslims claim that they are the real victims of Muslim terrorism because they now feel “unwelcome” when the bodies of non-Muslims still lie in the morgue.

Try comparing an “unwelcome” feeling to being dead

It is that sense of self-pitying Muslim victimization that leads easily to Muslim violence. Violence is often sanctioned by victimhood. That Muslims believe themselves to be the victims is nothing new. The Nazis also believed that they were the victims. So did the Muslim killer in a Kosher supermarket who claimed that ISIS, with its mass rapes and genocidal campaign, was the victim of French intervention.

If European Muslims really want to end atrocities like the ones that took place in Paris, instead of making themselves into the victims, they should examine the complicity of their religion, their politics and their sense of victimization in perpetrating them.

Calls for BBC Reporter to Resign After He Told Daughter of Holocaust Survivors in Paris

Posted by addisethiopia / አዲስ ኢትዮጵያ on January 12, 2015

  • Tim Willcox was covering yesterday’s Paris rally for the BBC News channel
  • He spoke to participants during a live broadcast from the streets of Paris
  • One woman he spoke to expressed fears Jews were being persecuted
  • She told him ‘the situation is going back to the days of the 1930s’
  • Willcox replied: ‘Many critics though of Israel’s policy would suggest that the Palestinians suffer hugely at Jewish hands as well’
  • Comments sparked anger and calls for him to resign
  • Willcox has apologized for offense caused by poorly phrased question

Journalist Tim Willcox sparked anger during his coverage of yesterday’s rally in Paris, held in memory of the 17 victims of last week’s terror attacks, including four Jewish people in a siege at a Kosher supermarket.

During a live report from the streets of Paris, Willcox was speaking to a number of participants in the march, including one woman who expressed her fears that Jews were being persecuted, and ‘the situation is going back to the days of the 1930s in Europe.’

Many viewers also used the social network to express their anger and concerns over Willcox’s rally coverage, including historian and BBC presenter Simon Schama.

He wrote on Twitter: ‘Appalling of @BBCTimWillcox to imply any and all JEWS (not Israelis) responsible for treatment of Palestinians by hectoring lady in Paris.’

And added: ‘Then he had gall to patronise her at the end – “you see people see it from all sides” That Palestinian plight justifies anti-semitic murder?’

Jewish Chronicle editor Stephen Pollard also joined the debate, tweeting: ‘What is @BBCTimWillcox’s problem with Jews? Once is problematic. Twice is a pattern.’

The Campaign Against Antisemitism, which works to combat anti-Semitism in Britain, has circulated footage of the incident, and has called on those offended by it to formally complain to the BBC.

Director of communications, Jonathan Sacerdoti, told MailOnline Willcox’s Twitter apology was ‘not really good enough’.

It’s an admission he has done something wrong, but it’s incumbent on the BBC to make an on-air apology and to investigate his behaviour.’

The BBC’s Tim Wilcox projects the last two hundred years of European anti-Jewish ideology on an elderly French woman

Wilcox was interviewing a French Jewish woman with limited English skills at yesterday’s anti-terrorism rally. The rally, of course, came in the wake of the murder of four French Jews at a kosher supermarket, in the broader context of widespread violence against Jews in France by Islamists. When she noted that Jews are being targeted in France, Wilcox interjected that “many critics though of Israel’s policy would suggest that the Palestinians suffer hugely at Jewish hands as well.” The woman tried to object, but Wilcox added that surely she understands that people see such things from different perspectives.

My friend Hill Wellford commented on Facebook with a brief but extremely insightful analysis, which aptly sums up how Wilcox’s interjection reflects a strain of European thought that helped lead to the Holocaust, and which the Holocaust obviously did not extinguish: “Interesting that there are two contradictory assumptions made at the same time. First, that Jews aren’t really Europeans even when they live in Europe; instead, they are Israelis or at least some form of collectively non-European other. Second, that Jews in Israel/Palestine are not really from there, either, but are some sort of colonizers that is oppressing the natives. The assumption seems to be that Jews are a stateless people, deserving to call nowhere home, but a coherent one that must answer for its collective guilt.” Yes, that about sums up modern European anti-Semitism, which undoubtedly infects the consciousness even of those who don’t consciously harbor ill-will toward Jews, and which we saw in the U.S. reflected recently in the remarks of (thankfully now former) Yale Episcopal chaplain Bruce Shipman.

Our Struggle is Not Against Flesh and Blood

Posted by addisethiopia / አዲስ ኢትዮጵያ on January 11, 2015

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” [Ephesians 6:12]

  • In the year 700, Ethiopia asked the then Christian powers of southern Europe (Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium)) to help her fight against Arab Muslim invaders. But, they hesitated. By the time Ethiopians start attacking Arab shipping in the Red Sea. Arabs in turn were able to occupy Ethiopian seaports, conquer Christian North Africa and wipe out indigineous Coptic Christians.
  • In the year 711, Arabs and Moors invaded Christian Spain.
  • The Paris tragedy took place on the 7th of January, 2015 – On Ethiopian CHRISTMAS Day. The Charlie Hebdo shooters used AK-47 assault rifles: 4+7 = 11
  • The Islamic terrorist attack in New York occurred on September 11, 2011 – Ethiopian NEW YEAR‘s Day
  • On September 11, 1683Ethiopian New Year – the tide of the second wave of the Great Islamic Jihad turned and began to ebb in Vienna, Austria

Today is January 11, 2015

The barbaric act in Paris was not the first of its kind, this Christmas season. We’ve been hearing about Islamic murders and attacks against non-Muslims every other day, for decades, the whole year, December in particular. December and January are Holy months for Christians, yet this Christmas, we were forced to hear more about terror, suicide murders, Islam and Mohamed than about the Lord Jesus Christ. Four days before Ethiopians were about to celebrate Christmas, Sufi Muslims of Ethiopia celebrated the birthday of their prophet, called Mawlid. Mawild isn’t even celebrated in the birthplace of Mohamed, Saudi Arabia.

It today’s processions in Paris we see people holding placards reading ‘Je Suis Charlie’ (I am Charlie) showing their support for the victims of the terrorist attack at French newspaper Charlie Hebdo. Pay attention to the morphology of the ‘two’ french words, Je Suis Charlie. JESUIS is almost JESUS. The acronym for JeSuis Charlie is JC = JESUS CHRIST. If we take the first two letters from the first name of the runaway terrorist woman, Hayat Boumeddiene (is she pregnant?), and make a composition with the last name of the Jewish supermarket, “Hyper Casher– where her partner murdered 4 Jewish shoppers – we have (phonetically) the name HAGAR = mother of Ishmael, the wild donkey of a man.

We are at war, it is a spiritual war, and the gullible liberal secularists are losing it. The wicked media manipulates lots of things, as it tries to forget everything about the victims while portraying the barbaric terrorists and their theatrical supporters as victims. CNN’s Christiane Amanpour: Charlie Hebdo Murderers Were “Activists” During today’s Paris march against terror most TV camera lenses and microphones were given to the Muslim participants who come out, not out of conviction but out of fear and possible backclash. Many even seem to have joined the march to celebrate their “victory”. They brought with them flags and banners that contain the crescent moon and star, their Arabic, their Allah – a perfect setting to herald Islamic triumphalism. That’s what BBC & Co showed us today.

No surprise, when Islamic propagandists like the makers of Al-Jazeera prefer to use the hashtag, story below, #JeSuisAhmed to #JeSuisCharlie or #JeSuisJuif, as they don’t like to show solidarity with the beleaguered Jews of France. They seem to be allergic to Christ and a Jew.

Today in Paris, there were 5000 policemen out there in the streets to protect 1.5 million, marchers, whereas, last Thursday, there were 88.000 policemen hunting for 2 terrorists.

In the above video we hear the response of Egyptian cleric Mostafa Al-Adwy to the Charlie Hebdo terror attack in Paris. He said: “Even though the whole world is crying about what happened to them, we are happy, by Allah

Do Western Media Experts Regret Mentoring and Babysitting Al-Jazeera & Co?

I AM NOT CHARLIE’: Leaked Newsroom E-mails Reveal Al Jazeera Fury over Global Support for Charlie Hebdo

SorryAs journalists worldwide reacted with universal revulsion at the massacre of some of their own by Islamic jihadists in Paris, Al Jazeera English editor and executive producer Salah-Aldeen Khadr sent out a staff-wide e-mail.

Please accept this note in the spirit it is intended — to make our coverage the best it can be,” the London-based Khadr wrote Thursday, in the first of a series of internal e-mails leaked to National Review Online. “We are Al Jazeera!”

His denunciation of Charlie Hebdo’s publication of cartoons mocking the prophet Mohamed didn’t sit well with some Al Jazeera English employees.

Hours later, U.S.-based correspondent Tom Ackerman sent an email quoting a paragraph from a January 7 blog post by Ross Douthat. The New York Times’ Douthat (film critic for National Review) argued that cartoons like the ones that drove the radical Islamists to murder must be published “because the murderers cannot be allowed for a single moment to think that their strategy can succeed.”

That precipitated an angry backlash from the network’s Qatar-based correspondents, revealing in the process a deep cultural rift at a network at times accused of overt anti-Western bias.

The heated back-and-forth reflects Al Jazeera English’s precarious balance between its Arab center of gravity and the Western correspondents it employs. After being accused for years of fomenting anti-Western sentiment, most damningly by some of its own anchors, the network made a concerted effort to rebrand, hiring a slew of American and European reporters — especially those who had trouble getting jobs in their own domestic markets.

Whoever Kills a Jew Is Going to Kill a Christian – Whoever Kills a Christian Is Going to Kill a Jew

Posted by addisethiopia / አዲስ ኢትዮጵያ on January 9, 2015

It’s obvious by now, that the Liberal atheists deserve a share of responsibility for the gruesome fate of persecuted Jews and Christians across the Middle East, Africa, and now Europe. They think that Jews, Christians and Blacks don’t have the kind of influence required to matter. How many of us knew that only this past weekend over 2000 villagers in Northern Nigeria have been slaughtered? How many of us knew that European Jews whose ancestors lived in Europe for many generations are now leaving Sweden, Belgium, The UK and France for Israel in large numbers? Why was the mainscream media silent to discuss why 5000 Jews left France the past couple of months? CNN & co report on the Paris hostage taking without linking it to a Jewish Supermarket, by avoiding to highlight it’s the Jews who are targeted here. They just say “a store, a supermarket” or “a kosher supermarket”. How many people can connect ‘Kosher‘ to Jews? Not that many! The police officer shot today in Paris in the line of duty by one of the Islamic terrorists was shot because she was defending a Jewish school. That little factoid has not appeared in the media. I think the Liberal atheists who now rule over western societies see that Jews, Christians and Blacks are not loud, aggressive, or capable enough to terrorize or murder them to matter. In their little world fear rules! The BBC has the ‘courage’ to raise up its voice to tell a black man that the GOLLIWOG doll is racist and offensive, so he is not qualified for their video camera, yet, a lot of airtime is given to the hateful, racist and offensive Islamists.

‘When Jews Flee, a Nation is Sick’

Little note: in this uncertain time, (even the medias that are supposed to know it better, keep on telling us, „we don’t know….we don’t know…”) there is something certain, and many populations across Europe know it: The following ‘joke’ can give us the hint:-

A Moroccan, an Arab and a Spanish Girl (Isabel la Católica) are in a Madrid bar drinking.

When the Moroccan finishes his beer, he throws his glass in the air, pulls out his pistol, and shoots the glass to pieces. He says, ‘In Morocco, our glasses are so cheap we don’t need to drink with the same one twice.’

The Arab, obviously impressed by this, drinks non-alcohol beer, throws it into the air, pulls out his AK-47, and shoots the glass to pieces.

He says, ‘In the Arab World, we have so much sand to make glasses that we don’t need to drink with the same one twice either.’

The Spanish girl, cool as a cucumber, picks up her beer, downs it in one gulp, throws the glass into the air, whips out her 45, and shoots the Moroccan and the Arab. Catching her glass, setting it on the bar, and calling for a refill.

She says, ‘In Spain, we have so many illegal aliens that we don’t have to drink with the same ones twice

Appeasement Comes Back to Haunt France

FAIt’s time that we finally admit it. The battle for Old Europe is over. The Gates of Vienna have finally been breached. Old Europe has been experiencing a tidal wave of violence and terror in recent years correlating to and in direct proportion with the growing influence of Muslims in the western part of the continent. Yesterday’s massacre in Paris by Muslims screaming “Allahuakbar” (what else?) represents a culmination of growing Muslim power and even dominance in France. Britain, Sweden, Belgium and the rest of the sorry lot are not too far behind. Today’s European Muslims have successfully accomplished what the Nazis could not accomplish in World War II. They have sown an irreversible dread into Europe and implanted a fascist-like Islamist seed that has taken firm root.

It is ironic that France has been the recent target of most of the violence. France of all the countries of Old Europe is one of Islam’s greatest appeasers. For all its official rhetoric, France has done precious little to stem the growing tide of Jew-hatred and anti-Israelism that has gripped that country. The sign of a sick and diseased country can be measured by its treatment of its Jews and by that paradigm, France’s condition is terminal. Mass emigration of French Jewry, prompted primarily by French Islamists, is met with muted response and inaction by French officials who appear either indifferent to their plight or at a loss to devise a coherent strategy to effectively deal with the phenomena.

Since the mid-1960s, the French, motivated partly out of greed, partly out of a need to needle the United States and partly out of genuine dislike for the Mideast’s only democracy, have done everything in their power to appease tyranny rather than fight it, to prop it up rather than obliterate it.

In May 1967 France was the first Western power to unilaterally impose an arms embargo on Israel at a precarious time when Israel was facing existential threats from its Arab neighbors. From Iraq to Algeria, frenzied Arab mobs stoked by their respective venal governments burned effigies of Jews in the streets to chants of Itbach al-Yahud, “slaughter the Jews!” The world watched with feigned concern as hundreds of thousands of Arabs soldiers backed by modern Soviet T-55 tanks and Mig fighter jets converged on Israel’s borders. The French, who barely had time to shed the stench of their collaborationist Vichy past, chose to abandon and betray the Jewish State in a transparent effort to curry favor with the Muslim world. The French sold their morality for oil and a few Francs.

France’s duplicitous foreign policies when it came to appeasing two-bit Arab dictators only went from bad to worse. They helped Saddam Hussein construct an atom bomb plant and supplied the tyrant with massive quantities of Mirage fighter jets, missiles, tanks and artillery. For those who need reminding, this is the same chap who paid lavish sums to the families of Palestinian homicide bombers, who threatened to “burn half of Israel” and employed chemical weapons against his own people.

The French really know how to pick ‘em. Successive French governments have developed a penchant for coddling up to the most vile Islamic dictators and terror sponsoring states. Close relationships were forged with Hafez Assad of Syria and arch terror chieftain Yasser Arafat, a despicable murderer who was always warmly greeted by adoring and fawning French officials.

Rather than fighting and combatting Islamic terrorists, the French have a nasty habit of paying them off. They released frozen Iranian assets in exchange for cessation of Iranian-backed terror attacks against France and paid Palestinian groups protection money in an effort to spare their commercial airliners from the scourge of Palestinian skyjackings.

France’s abominable foreign policy reared its ugly head yet again when on December 30, it backed a Palestinian resolution at the UN Security Council that imposed dictates on Israel, compelling the Jewish State to withdraw to pre-1967 borders – borders which Israel’s former UN ambassador, Abba Ebban, perceptively termed “Auschwitz lines“– without addressing Israel’s security needs and territorial claims. The one-sided resolution also gave implicit recognition to the notion that millions of “Palestinian refugees” would be allowed to flood Israel, effectively ending the Jewish character of the state.

To the leaders of France, composed of Neville Chamberlin lookalikes, adopting the Palestinian narrative and coddling up to the Mideast’s Muslim dictators, is good for business and insulates France against Islamic-inspired terror attacks. Yesterday’s barbaric Muslim massacre of French political satirists, journalists and policemen in Paris proves otherwise and should compel French leaders to reevaluate their foreign and liberal domestic policies. It should also serve as a wakeup call for the rest of Old Europe to do the same but something tells me that this will not occur and there will be no course correction.

We will hear from “moderate” French Muslim leaders who will rush to exercise the Muslim principle of Taqiyya and feign concern for the victims while condemning the actions of their coreligionists. This expression of faux sympathy will be enough to placate France’s leadership and their very forgiving multicultural allies. In a few weeks or perhaps months, all will return to “normal.” French Muslim Imams will continue to spew hate directed against the “infidels” from the mosques. Violent anti-Israel, Jew-hating protests will resume in the streets of Paris and Marseilles and French officials will once again move to condemn Israel for committing some imaginary offense because it’s good for business. The Gates of Vienna have been breached.

BBC Refuse to Air Interview With Black History Campaigner Because He Was Wearing a GOLLIWOG Doll Around His Neck

  • 2484D8EE00000578-0-image-a-16_1420746706190Chaka Artwell was due to be interviewed about saving his local pool
  • BBC South Today reporter Tom Turrell asked him to remove the doll
  • But Mr Artwell refused because ‘white, middle-class liberal types’ had decided doll was racist and offensive
  • A BBC spokesman said: ‘We asked him to remove the large doll because it would distract viewers in a discussion about a local swimming pool’
  • Mr Artwell has previously organised talks to mark Black History Month

Mr Artwell said that ‘white, middle-class liberal types’ had decided his doll was racist and offensive.

‘When I was growing up in this country, this guy was a popular figure,’ he said.

‘Then, without anyone asking me if I was offended by it, people decided I was offended by it.

A Wise Man’s Cure: Frankincense is For Life, Not Just For Christmas

Posted by addisethiopia / አዲስ ኢትዮጵያ on January 4, 2015

At this time of year it is hard to escape the Three Wise Men, riding their camels across Christmas cards and appearing in miniature form in countless school nativity plays across the world, bearing their gifts for the infant Jesus. Whilst we are all familiar with gold, it is the mention of frankincense and myrrh that really says “Christmas” to us and and takes our imaginations back to ancient times. But you might be surprised to learn that these two fragrances are still big business today; for example, Ethiopia alone trades around 4000 tonnes of frankincense every year. This is all the more remarkable because a single tree from which the resin is harvested will typically yield about 200g per year. The main international trade comes from a tree called Boswellia papyrifera, and Ethiopia is the main exporting country.

Frankincense is harvested by wounding the bark of trees and collecting the resin that is subsequently released from the wound, a process known as tapping. Tapping is carried out at several spots along the stem, using a traditional type of tool that resembles a chisel. The procedure is repeated in 8 tapping rounds during the dry season, which lasts about 8 months. But high demand means that many trees are being over-exploited and populations are at risk of dying out, threatening the livelihoods of villagers who depend on them.

But help may be on hand as the results of a new study by botanists from Ethiopia and the Netherlands led by Motuma Tolera, which could secure a future for the trees by revealing the anatomy of the resin secretory system.

Motuma Tolera explains, “In some areas, the high demand for frankincense is causing over-tapping, which is bad for a couple of reasons. Tapping the tree creates wounds in the stem that take resources to be healed, and more wounds create more opportunities for insects to attack the tree. It’s not a surprise that some trees die. This is bad for the tree but also for the people living in those areas, since they depend on the resin production, both economically and culturally.

One of the problems is the lack of knowledge of the type, architecture and distribution of resin producing, storing and transporting structures in the tree. Such knowledge is needed for improved tapping techniques in the future.”

The study, published this month in the Annals of Botany, provides this detailed knowledge for the first time.

Motuma Tolera said, “What we found was a 3-D network of inter-connected canals in the inner bark. Most of these canals are within a very narrow region of the inner bark, in a zone that is less than 7 millimeters thick. These allow for the transport of resin around the tree. We also found a few canals connecting deep into the xylem, the heart of the tree.”

The findings will have practical applications for the people of Ethiopia and other frankincense producers. Traditional tapping starts with a shallow wound, from which a relatively small amount of resin is released. The wound is then re-opened later with a cut that goes a bit deeper and more resin is collected – a process that is repeated over and over again. The amount of resin collected peaks after about 5 rounds of tapping, which the study suggests is the point at which the wound reaches the main region of resin canals.

Motuma Tolera says, “Our results suggest that tapping can become more efficient. A cut that goes deeper, earlier in the tapping cycle, may drain the resin more effectively. Since the 3-D resin canal network may allow for long distance movement of resin when it is intact, this would be an option to reduce the number of cuts, and reduce the damage to the trees. New studies will be needed to show how such improvements may keep trees healthy but still productive for resin production. This opens new ways for a more sustainable frankincense production system.”

It’s nice to discover something new, but here we also have the opportunity to give something back to the people who helped us with the study. I hope everyone in Lemlem Terara, but also elsewhere in Ethiopia, will benefit from what we have found in the future.” Tolera says.

The team hope the results mean more Boswellia trees will live to see next Christmas.

Egypt’s Sisi: Islamic “Thinking” Is “Antagonizing the Entire World”

Speaking before Al-Azhar and the Awqaf Ministry on New Year’s Day, 2015, and in connection to Prophet Muhammad’s upcoming birthday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, a vocal supporter for a renewed vision of Islam, made what must be his most forceful and impassioned plea to date on the subject.

Among other things, Sisi said that the “corpus of [Islamic] texts and ideas that we have sacralized over the years” are “antagonizing the entire world”; that it is not “possible that 1.6 billion people [reference to the world’s Muslims] should want to kill the rest of the world’s inhabitants—that is 7 billion—so that they themselves may live”; and that Egypt (or the Islamic world in its entirety) “is being torn, it is being destroyed, it is being lost—and it is being lost by our own hands.”

The relevant excerpt from Sisi’s speech:

I am referring here to the religious clerics. We have to think hard about what we are facing—and I have, in fact, addressed this topic a couple of times before. It’s inconceivable that the thinking that we hold most sacred should cause the entire umma [Islamic world] to be a source of anxiety, danger, killing and destruction for the rest of the world. Impossible!

That thinking—I am not saying “religion” but “thinking”—that corpus of texts and ideas that we have sacralized over the years, to the point that departing from them has become almost impossible, is antagonizing the entire world. It’s antagonizing the entire world!

Is it possible that 1.6 billion people [Muslims] should want to kill the rest of the world’s inhabitants—that is 7 billion—so that they themselves may live? Impossible!

I am saying these words here at Al Azhar, before this assembly of scholars and ulema—Allah Almighty be witness to your truth on Judgment Day concerning that which I’m talking about now.

All this that I am telling you, you cannot feel it if you remain trapped within this mindset. You need to step outside of yourselves to be able to observe it and reflect on it it from a more enlightened perspective.

I say and repeat again that we are in need of a religious revolution. You, imams, are responsible before Allah. The entire world, I say it again, the entire world is waiting for your next move… because this umma is being torn, it is being destroyed, it is being lost—and it is being lost by our own hands.

Note: It is unclear if in the last instance of umma Sisi is referring to Egypt (“the nation”) or if he is using it in the pan-Islamic sense as he did initially to refer to the entire Islamic world.
