Liberia: Christians Call for Referendum

My Note: I say kudos, why not?! There is Israel, officially a Jewish state, there are hundreds of countries that are SECULAR, COMMUNISTS, and, most of all, there are 52 Muslim majority countries that call themselves Islamic, whose constitution is based on Islamic law. These nations went even further to form apartheid-like organizations, as one Arab writer admits himself, like The Organization of Islamic Cooperation, The Arab League or OPEC. The OIC takes care of the religious aspect of the apartheid, The Arab League, for the nationalistic and OPEC for the economic aspects. Diabolically smart, ehh? On the other hand, there ain’t a single country on planet Earth that calls itself a Christian country. Why is it? Have you heard of, The Slavic League? The German League? The African League? The Latin League? The Mongol League? Never! There are two Countries in Africa which are considered to never have been colonized: Ethiopia and Liberia. Ethiopia, as the first Christian nation, has the natural right to name herself a Christian country, but if Liberians decide to name their country, “The Christian Republic of Liberia”,, who in a rational universe does have the right to deny them? Let’s face it, no one!

The Christian group campaigning for Liberia to become a ‘Christian nation’ has stressed the for the country to go to referendum to test its recent petition to the Legislature.

The group strongly blasted President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for her opposition to its call for a Christian state, which has also been vehemently rejected by Muslims in the country.

The group said the President’s position on the debate clearly indicates that she has lost her ‘political neutrality’ which places her in a state of confusion.

Addressing a news conference in Monrovia on Sunday afternoon, the spokesperson for the group Rev. Sekou Trokon Sirleaf noted that during the Bethel Conference in Monrovia a year ago, President Sirleaf declared Liberia a Christian nation, but to have somersaulted this time around is something “worrisome and disheartening.”

Rev. Sirleaf (no relations to the President) said it is important that senior and influential political leaders in the country, including President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Vice President Joseph Boakai, Speaker Alex Tyler, Senate Pro-tempore Gbehnzohngar Milton Findley and others remain neutral and allow a national referendum to finding a way forward on the issue.

Commenting on the campaign, he said if Liberia becomes a Christian state, the country’s spiritual direction or identity will be restored, and peaceful co-existence will be enhanced.

“The blessings of God for us and our posterity will be restored with peace and tranquility. It is only under the Christian religion that all other religions can peacefully co-exist. Even under secularism, religious co-existence has not been possible”, he noted.

Rev. Sirleaf: “The best thing that can happen is to allow Liberian Legislature to debate the matter, come up with their conclusions and put up a national referendum in which we can all participate and vote based on our inclination. If you don’t want Liberia to be a Christian nation, vote no, while those who want the country to return to her Christian heritage with religious tolerance can vote yes. This is as simple as A, B, C and D.”

The Christian group under the banner “The Liberian Restoration to Christian Heritage Committee” said its members are committed to keeping the peace, “We have worked so hard to earn. It beats our imagination to hear others speak of instability, chaos, war and so on and so forth that could be created. When Egypt in spite of the over 10,000 Coptic Christians present in that country without considering their rights declared an Islamic State, Libya, Tunisia, and Algeria met a predominantly Christianized north Africa, rooted the Church and completely Islamized the entire north Africa till date is also right, We cannot see why a referendum to constitutionally restore Liberian Christian Heritage will be considered wrong. We just can’t see why people have started crying ‘wolf’ when there is none,” Rev. Sirleaf said.

He called on the government and the international community, including the Mano River Union, ECOWAS, African Union, the European Union and the United Nations to ensure that their rights are respected just as it is done in other nations with religious identity, saying “A country we purchased, crafted and launched as an independent State will not be a ‘Secular State’. Liberia by the Constitution through a National Referendum will be restored to a Christian nation with religious tolerance.”
